I had to interrupt my post on the characteristics an anime should possess in order to be classified as a good anime, to write an article on Naruto, yep..Naruto. Why in the world would I encourage the Narutards out there you might ask? Simple, last week I came face to face with a die hard Naruto fan who told me that Naruto was deeper than Death note. Now, I’m not going to sit here and praise the sophisticated astute plot Death note, but I will point out that Naruto more than any other anime, except bleach, is the most overrated anime of all time!! So i dedicate this post to all you Naruto fans out there, especially the one I encountered the other day- you know who you are. Before we start let’s make Naruto with quotations marks like this “” stand for the show itself and let Naruto by itself represent the main character Naruto.

Why do you hate “Naruto”?

I don’t hate “Naruto”, in fact I still watch and read it until this very day. I’ll be the first to admit that “Naruto” is very entertaining. But that in of itself does not make an anime good. To provide an analogy, let’s say “Naruto” is like Mcdonalds, sure it taste good but it has little nutritional value i.e substance. Of course, I know i’m treading on forbidden territory right now, but who cares, the truth must be told. “Naruto” is like a combination of all pop animes conveniently rolled into a giant mesh of ninja and sorcery. It makes for good visuals, but it also makes for horrible character develop, plotting, and innovation. It’s superficial and made the masses.

Why “Naruto” isn’t a good anime?

Naruto is a character that continuously pops up in animes and it is damned annoying. The clownish, super strong, inlove, wants attention, but will save the day character has been done to death…enough already!!! Isn’t Luffy from One Piece enough!? Naruto as a character is not deep..he wants to become hokage because he wants attention..ooooooooooooo…sophisticated. He wants to save Suseke because he promised his stalking victim and believes that Suseke is his friend forever…wow he’s deep!! When the writers of “Naruto l”ack ideas, they either kill someone, injure someone, do a memory montage of someone, or introduces a new character. Yuck!!! This is what sitcoms do all the time!! Now, I know that Naruto isn’t the only anime that does this, but can you honestly say that their story line and plot isn’t tirelessly redundant? Naruto is weak, than he becomes strong, just to find out he is still weak, so he becomes stronger, but he still isn’t strong enough, therefore, he must become even stronger!!! Ugh!! “Naruto” would be great if the main protagonist died! Now that would be interesting… But that’s just a pipe dream. Oh well, objectively speaking “Naruto” is the kind of anime you swear you saw some where before, but just can’t place your finger on it. Okay, let me stop ranting and conclude this puppy.

In Conclusion

This post is made for Naruto fans, and others, who need to get a grip. If you like “Naruto”, that’s fine. If you think its pretty good, hey that’s fine too. Just stop going around swearing its the best thing to ever come from Japan. Stop making things up, like the character development which is lacking,( i.e “I must kill my brother to avenge my clan!” Ugh!! ) or good the plot is, which in reality is a tired boring plot that makes no sense anymore and just seems to be dragged out for money making purposes..like one piece. There is life after “Naruto”, there are animes better than Naruto…. Now, go watch Gintama and save yourself! Next week, we will discuss what makes an Anime A-Okay! ;)

oh yeah almost forgot about my G-manness… Thanks Ascaloth.

It gets on my nerve when people think that Naruto is also the only anime that’s ever existed too, but I try not to mind it too much.

I loved “Naruto” back in the past..(lol)..
At first, I thought that it was the coolest thing ever..
But then, when I watched other animes..
    I HATE “Naruto”..
Other animes are WAY better than “Naruto”
And I regretted that I watched 160 episodes of “Naruto”..
I could have done many things with that time..

But I have to say, “Naruto” is the show that introduced me to anime..
So, without Naruto, I wouldn’t be here right now..

I dunno about that, but i have seen Harutards that claimed Haruhi was deeper than Death Note, or Zetsutards who claimed that Zetsubou Sensei was actually funny ! Who in their right minds would spout such nonsense ?

Lies, all lies. Everyone knows that a measure of how good an anime series is is how good it sells. Thats all that matters. Naruto is teh bestest animu evar.

As an avid Zetsutard, I must say manga has rocked my s0x the whole way, laughing.

Anyway, the problem with Naruto isn’t that people like it, or that they often would like to make babies with it. The problem with Naruto is that it draws in a huge crowd of people who refuse to expand their viewings before becoming fanatical over the first thing they see. Relatively speaking, Narutards resemble what we would if we stopped watching anime at DBZ, Sailor Moon, Speed Racer, Gundam or To Heart. . . Or maybe Death Note if you’re an ebil newbie. Well, everyone has their own starter anime. If we stopped there instead of expanding our horizons, we’d all be ____tards.

Most of them just need to take off their headbands and watch some new crap. They’d reach a point where they became tolerable soon after, I believe.

In short, the stigma of idiocy around ‘Naruto’ is the fault of the fans, rather than the mediocre series itself.

Me and my Friends have been saying that the main character should die. Namely Ichigo from Bleach. Compared to him, naruto is God. Maybe not. Naruto is the path to the fork in the road. Many people have started anime because of Naruto and Bleach. From there, they moved on (one fork) or they stayed and become tards (the other). In my opinion, the anime doesn’t do the manga justice at all. One Piece has never dissapointed me though.

Is the hating of naruto a form of bandwagoning?

  14. 14 0ne 135 comments

Naruto to the 2000s is like Dragonball Z in the 90s. There’ll always be a Shonen Jump manga adapted anime to rule them all.

  15. 15 The P-Meister 5 comments

but dragon ball was original… in the 90’s at least. Its artwork was also revolutionary… but i just hate spiky head characters after a while. Naruto came after dragonball. Perhaps its good for people who have just stepped into the hobby of watching anime to get a little entertainment which they have never seen before.

However, people will always try to promote what they viewed. The worst thing is, shutting their narrow-minded self up like a cocoon. There are Dragonballtards out there too and even tards for everything, but naruto is where tards gather i suppose.

  16. 16 NARUTO IS BAD ANIME 1 comment

NARUTO is misinformating about the real ninjas. Real ninjas were assasins, terrorists, spy, etc. There were no “good ninjas” at all. Naruto is giving an unreal images of ninjas.

    Sorry for my bad english.

  19. 19 Joo 2 comments

Okay, I will be the first to admit that Naruto is not the best anime I have ever seen. In fact, the Naruto anime greatly butchers the Naruto manga. The amount of pointless, stupid filler made me angry and I felt like I had wasted brain cells and too large a portion of my life watching that series. BUT HAVE ANY OF YOU SEEN NARUTO SHIPPUUDEN? It is the one thing that has reconciled Naruto for me. The characters all still have the same basic motivations and such but there is less filler, it gets much more interesting, faster paced and overall just BETTER!!!! Naruto is older, and less annoying. I even like the art and the soundtrack much more than the earlier episodes. I LOVE NARUTO SHIPPUUDEN! Again, the manga is still better and there are several other anime I consider to be much better than Naruto Shippuuden but at least it is showing improvement! :D

  20. 20 ganon 1 comment

shippuuden is faster paced? lol i can’t imagine how slow the original series is. shippuuden is only barely watchable at 2x speed for me. even then it’s still boring.

  21. 21 chappy 1 comment

@Joo: Shippuden isn’t faster paced. Team Kakashi spent 4-5 whole episodes running in an underground cavern, looking for Sasuke and talking to themselves. It took them over 45 episodes before they finally found Sasuke. Also, it has just entered into the filler phase where they’re battling some other clan instead of chasing Sasuke.

I’m not really sure where you get the idea of “faster paced” from. The show would be decently watchable if the animation was better and the story less draggy. Think episode 133 for better animation. The fight scene was done much better than the rest of the series.

If you think about it, “Naruto” is actually a kid’s show. Not 15 16 year olds, but 9 and 10 year olds. Every move a character does will be followed by a lengthy 5 minute explanation. 5 minutes of explanation for a move executed in 10 seconds.

  22. 22 Joo 2 comments

Chappy, I tend to agree with your comment, although by faster paced I meant the story line moved along faster, or in other words, there was less filler. In the original Naruto series, for every episode of plot it felt like there were five episodes of filler. You would get to major points in the anime but then there would be filler thrown in first. It was extremely frustrating but in Shippuuden it felt like the focus shifted more to the plot, allowing the story to flow better with less interruptions. But alas, Shippuuden has entered into filler. I found this out shortly after writing my last post and I was greatly disappointed. I still maintain that Naruto Shippuuden is much better than the original series and I was extremely impressed with the Gaara arch. However, at this point I am considering abandoning the anime to focus solely on the manga instead.

The irony about Naruto is that it is not really meant for 15-16 year olds or 9-10 year olds. The producers of the anime are trying to create a show that they can market to both to reach a wider age range but in the process, they often alienate both audiences. For instance, the general themes in Naruto are aimed more toward an older audience but then the show is “dumbed down” and marketed to a younger audience. This problem happens with a lot of anime that should be mature but is ruined in the attempt to allow all ages to watch it. For example, One Piece was initially intended as an anime for an older youth audience in Japan but when it was brought over to the States, it was butchered and marketed to a younger audience. I dislike the One Piece anime in general but I still laugh at how something such as a cigarette was deemed inappropriate and replaced with a lollipop. But it seems I am getting utterly off topic…

I hate to say it but DBZ was my first anime and to be honest Naruto is a billion times better but has the same basic story line. It sucks because I’ve probably watched 400 plus episodes of both animes. But lets be reasonable here. There are way worst animes to be watching. Theys animes are just in between fillers until the good anime comes out. Ether that or you have to watch overly random Moe shit, or something full of unneeded, distasteful fan service.

    Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann FTW!

  26. 26 Wisknort 1 comment

Ok, I don’t watch “naruto”, but I can’t say it is because it sucks as I have only seen about 10 episodes, apparently after the chunin selection exam naruto stops being an annoying brat whose life is not worth following.

However, on the topic of closed minds after one anime, I agree… DB/DBZ, Bleach and “Naruto” are not the best. I personally don’t watch many of the “big” anime, such as “Naruto”, but I do watch Bleach. I prefer some more obscure ones such as Scrapped Princess (Anyone here who hasn’t heard of Scrapped Princess should at least look it up and probably go watch one or two episodes). How’s this for and idea though: If you don’t watch more than 2 anime, you cannot promote the ones you do watch.

Enough of that for now… On the subject of “Naruto” v. Bleach (Which I probably shouldn’t bring up here but oh well) Think about episode 1 only of them each, and consider which one wins… I say Bleach because Ichigo is already a Shinigami and fighting, where as “Naruto” takes about 10-15 episodes just to get to a half-decent fight.

Anyone who wants to flame me, e-mail me instead with subject “Naruto Blog” (Without quotes). Anything else I get from here will be deleted… Zergling_man@hotmail.com

I Have a feeling that anime in general have great starts but worse ends, worse still, if they start stretching it beyond original story. Examples of worse ends are wolf’s rain (even if one of the best plots) and elfen lied. Examples of overstretching are DBZ and NARUTO.Out of these two Naruto is worse because it’s projection of the plot and the real plot (if there is any real plot ) are quite different. The initial plot was to portray the life and effort of one outcasted, underdog good for nothing naruto to realize his dream of becoming hokage.on the contrary what they are showing Nowis how to retrieve sasuke (another good for nothing character) and the initial dream of naruto is now more or less is out of focus(even if he keeps crying it loud). I feel the problem lies in the transition of the story from manga to anime, as it is than the real big money starts coming in and writers are forced to stretch it. If it is not money than there may be some fundamental defect in structure of this system. Anyway I have decided to quit naruto and will only be watching the anime which have ended and have fewer episodes(like death note).

  28. 28 Ryan 1 comment

Well, I have to say that I actually like Naruto. I fully agree with pretty much everything you’re saying though. And the anime doesn’t do the manga justice. And then there’s Naruto Shippuuden, which is actually solely responsible for the fact that I no longer watch Naruto. For example, let’s look at the original anime. No fight lasted longer than 2-3 episodes, and most of the ones that lasted that long had flashbacks. Fights in Shippuuden are stretched out to fill 5 episodes or more sometimes, with no flashbacks and a lot of standing around explaining their techniques. So, Naruto is definitely not the best anime ever, but it’s far better than Shippuuden…

If the anime sucks, just read the manga. 90% of the time it’s way better.

i actually like naruto shippuuden, its pretty awesome, but yeah there is alot of filler, but lots of awesome parts to make up.

Funny, I have seen many anime, so one cannot call me a “closed minded person.” It was not the first anime I’ve seen, and it won’t be nor hasn’t been the last, but Naruto is undoubtedly my favorite. And I’m not a crowd-follower. I always disliked the people who buy “what’s in” to fit in.

I find it hilarious how people play the “OMG, it’s so not original!” card. OK Barbie, are you an original person? Most people would claim they are, but broken down, their personality can be sorted just as anyone else’s. Since Death Note was mentioned, I’ll make an example of that. Light…hmm, smart guy who thinks he should rule the world after obtaining a “power”. L…weird smart guy who hides behind the scenes trying to defeat an evil. [sarcasm]Wow, those have never ever ever been done before![/sarcasm]

Not like “real” ninja? Are you a Japanese historian, or are you the simple-minded person who bases their knowledge off of old movies? I’m guessing option 2. Besides, last time I checked, anime weren’t supposed to be 100% realistic, or did I not get the memo? Naruto is one heck of a ninja if you ask me, being able to hide wearing orange. You have to be totally awesome to do that.

Is it true there are fans who make Naruto look bad? Heck yeah. To me, that’s a Narutard. I think every anime gets these rabie-infested fans, it’s just that ones played translated on TV get it worse. And yes, these TV anime become the only arsenal for these horse-vision fans to base their anime know-how on. It’s quite sad, really.

I could continue, but I have other things to do. Enough time has already been spent.

  33. 33 Asuken 1 comment

This guy tries to talk but he has no prove backing up his claims. Its just this guy threw together. Ok you think Naruto is not good ok but don’t try and throw your opinion off as fact. Its a opinion just like my opinion is Naruto is amazing oh and I also would like to say I would like you to make something better.

  34. 34 Rachel. 1 comment

Now, Dispell, I can see your point in that animes are not always one hundred percent accurate. That, I agree with, and I’ve no clue what that guy was talking about. However–and this is just from recalling the animes I can remember that I’ve watched– I can’t remember any characters like Light or L. Maybe there are some pretty smart and evil characters out there, but none like them. I think the reason why people call “Naruto” an unoriginal anime is because of the cliche ramen-eating and whatnot. (Can’t name any other examples because the ramen is what I see most often.)

I call Death Note original because of the story plot. Don’t know about Naruto’s plot enough to say that it’s NOT original, but what people keep saying is that Naruto is a boy who can turn into a fox, and eats ramen, and fights people. (I also find Death Note more interesting when people talk about it: “There’s this genius maniac serial killer who tries to take over the world!11!1″)

What my main point is, is that analyzing an anime obviously shows that often they are the same. Usually, I watch anime for the entertainment and story/character development, not to compare it to other animes.

About your liking Naruto as your favorite, it’s fine as long as you don’t hate on other animes like you just did. ._.

(I could also continue, but I have to go waste my summer watching anime.)

  35. 35 Wootness 1 comment

I’m a Naruto fan, I just like it for what it is, whats the point in ruining things by comparing them to everything else out there - lacking something is not always neccessarily a bad thing. You could compare anything to anything, but when its just to make a point of preference - then what really is the point? Its like saying (insert X favorite sitcom here) is better than (insert Y favorite sitcom here), sometimes I may be sick and tired of X so I watch Y or vica versa, its mood dependent. Maybe I want to see mindless action one day and character development the next… take it and enjoy it for what it is and if you don’t like it period don’t waste your time writing about it.

Oh, and the biggest point to your post should be to make good suggestions of alternatives - of which you only randomly mention two, I think something called Death Note and Gintama. I’ll check em out, but you should have spent more time listing other flavors of Anime for readers to check out.

so so so sorry that my commen is soooooo long!!!!!

“Naruto is a character that continuously pops up in animes and it is damned annoying.”, hmmmm so what? the charcters may share some characteristics, (i mean most protagonists do) but thought the basic skeleton is the same, theres allways something unique and different, (ive never watched one piece so i can’t use as an example, but look at the protagonist of Death Note and Code Geass they are so similar, they both share the “evil laghter” Muhahah phase, both have stumbled ccross great magical power and use it for domination, etc etc but the shows are so different!!!
To me Naruto’ character is an inspiration - he never gives up, he’s fair, he’s loyal to his companions, he’s kind-hearted and compassionate and he doesn’t allllllways save the day, i can bring up many examples if you care to listen. However i woild agree i yo said that hes not a particularly hard character to fugure out - he’s predictable but i like that about him - he knows who he is and we know who he is - i gues that could be boring and not itresting to some but then we have so many other characters to balance out Naruto “predictable” nature, Sai - a chracter in Shippuden was pretty unpredictable.
Ok What the hell do you mean by “he wants attention..ooooooooooooo…sophisticated”, the reason as to why he wants to become Hocage is CLEARLY explained, when he was little everyone ignored him, looked down on him or talked behind his bck (cuz he was the fox monsterthingy) so he wants them to acknowlege him, ok not the noblest reason, at 1 other time he said that he loves Konoha and wants to protect the village as best as he can (what better way to do that then become Hocage) anyway point is he has what it takes to become the Hocagecuz he BELEIVES IN HIMSELF, he’s set a goal in his life-
anyway i can go on forever. - and btw i have seen tons of anime thank you very much.

I love naruto but im not that diehard. i may love it but sometimes i get tired of it too. the only thing that keeps me watching it is waiting for something to come whizz! bang! but its still not here. sometimes its very funny and makes be laugh so hard. funny as in silly when the characters eyes go all white and round like in episode 101. I dunno. Maybe i love it cuz i havent seen other anime besides one bleach movie and one finalfantasy movie. well it s all up to the future.

Ok. I myself, am guilty of being a “bleachtard”, if thats what you people call it. Listen, Bleach the anime is good. The manga is WAYY better! But I am gratefully for the anime because it really makes the manga come to life. Naruto I have just started watching. I mean its okay, but its not as comical as Bleach. I have to say, I have never read the manga Naruto but I am planning on it. I just finished the Death Note series. It was awesome!!! I loved it!!! It was very deep. But as a Bleach fan I was left slightly dissapointed because the lack of # of episodes. I wish there was more to love! I am not hating anyone but I am just saying to me Naruto is amazing or very good if you prefer and I have all right to waste time if I enjoy it. And get this call me what you like because its things like these shows that inspire me I am almost 20 years old and this stuff will never die. Adult but a kid at heart always. But that doesn’t stop me from reality. Well point made and read the paragraph below I know what you are thinking of commenting.

  43. 43 Amanda-Chan 1 comment

Okay, to start out let me say I am not a hard core anime fan. In fact, (And i know this is gunna kill you guys) I don’t read or like manga. Yeah, I know. Maybe this is due to the fact that I’m American and reading from right to left weirds me the hell out or maybe its just because I figure fight scenes are better seen then read, in any case I don’t like Manga.
So, just to be clear, I am a pretty stereotypical American Anime Watcher and have only seen the more popular titles, including (you guessed it) Naruto.

And though, like everyone i have a hard time staying constant to a show thats so damn long, every time i watch it i fall in love with the show a little bit more. Naruto is, in fact, not a particularly deep character. He wants to be hokage so that everyone will respect him and recognize him as a human being. He wants to save Sasuke, not because there BFFs and can’t be apart. But because Sasuke was one of the first people to truly recognize Naruto as a person. All of which stems back to Naruto being left alone as a child because of a series of events that weren’t his fault at all. So congrats you hit the nail on the head: He wants attention.

But for me, (And hey maybe only me) “Naruto” is about one thing: never giving up. Its about holding fast to your dreams because, as depressing as it is, sometimes there all you have. Sasuke had one dream: Kill Itachi. And he made it happen. Sakura had one dream: Get stronger. She did. Naruto has one dream: Make everyone remember him.

And has there ever been anyone who didn’t remember meeting Naruto Uzumaki?

So maybe to you its not deep. But to me (And hey it might be only me) “Naruto” makes you believe anything is possible with a big enough smile and a little determination.

    Believe It(:

  44. 44 Roba 1 comment

Deathnote is probably one of the most overrated animes ever. Yes, the first dozen episodes were good, but the amount of foresight and intuition is just as unrealistic a giant rasengan. It was still entertaining.

That’s what animes are all about. Entertainment. So while you argue that Naruto isn’t as great as people shout it out to be, that’s your opinion. You may enjoy animes that are more deep and philosophical, but again, that’s what you find ENTERTAINING. So to say that Naruto isn’t as good a show as “X”, is based on your percpetion of what is entertaining.

The main point I’m making here is that if a show makes the most amount of money, it implies that it IS the most entertaining, and therefore THE BEST anime on the market. Doesn’t mean it caters to your personal tastes, but it does to the masses.

I also recognize this was written a long time ago. The manga and series have gotten a lot better in the past 30 episodes. At this rate, I wouldn’t classify one better than the other.

All this said, I wish Naruto followed the same direction it did with the zazuba chapter. But even still, filler and repetition aside, I find it very entertaining, and hope it ends before I’m 30..lol
