What a great show it has been, seriously. Since everyone talks about the characters, their development etc, I’ll just focus on the aspect of it which enthralled me most - the action.
Kurenai has the most exciting action sequences in the whole season, far surpassing shows which are supposed to be about action. It’s like having a girl defeat you at peeing long distance! On a similar note, Gintama has better slice of life and dramatic moments than most slice of life and drama shows but that’s for another day.
First off, particularly in the penultimate episode, the fights were quite brutal and the forces of good were given a good rollicking by Lin and Ryuuji. Man, Ryuuji’s such a fucker, he wants to fuck his own sister who’s seven! That aside, the lack of super powers and indestructible bodies made each fight have edge-of-the-seat level of excitement. The Naruto-style bone thing doesn’t really count because it’s sort of just a surgical implant, and Shinkurou only uses it in the last fight of the entire show. That was a fight as much as our neighbourhood butcher giving me some sliced ham is a fight. The action was tarnished by Yayoi’s magical recovery in the last episode as well as Benika’s but it’s made up for by the uber car chase.
Most car chases are forgettable as the cars are treated like disposable goods, but in Kurenai, you can feel the heart pain Benika does when her car gets smashed up. Did you know to replace even a single mirror, much less the entire side mirror, costs about 600-700 dollars? So kids, think twice about scratching your neighbours’ cars. I really liked the snowy terrain, which made controlling the vehicle perilous, especially at the high speeds both vehicles were travelling. The final hurrah was the cars blazing through the inner sanctum itself. It’s like taking a humvee and rolling through the office you’ve wasted your entire career on after they gave you the sack.
The excitement of Kurenai’s fights stem far, far outclass that of anything else this season. And that’s not even the best part of the show. While many are complaining that there won’t be a second season due to the anime straying too far from the original, I’m pretty satisfied with this ending. I was expecting Murasaki to be rescued and taken out but that would be a short term and unsustainable good outcome, considering how the Kuhouin goons’ll just get her back.
Finally, Murasaki is way too mature and intelligent for a seven year old. Seriously, these are some of the lines that seven-year olds say.
- "Mama, where’s my milk?"
- "Sowwy, Mama I poo poo in my pant pants."
- "I dun wanna gooo to schooool!!"
- "Teacher teacher, she beat me! I beat her back ok?"

“It’s like having a girl defeat you at peeing long distance!”
So true. And well put.
I get the feeling they cheezed out some of the middle episodes just so they can go nuts at the last two eps with the action stuff.
Most of these so called Slice of Life shows I find don’t even feel like a slice of life so I don’t really bother with them. These days when I hear the term Slice of Life applied to an anime my immediate first thought isn’t “Characters live out there lives and we possibly learn something about humanity in the process”, but “HOLY CRAP IT’S CUTE GIRLS AND THEY ARE DOING CUTE THINGS!”.
Though I guess just looking at Kurenai it has a one up on most “Slice of Life” series by actually feauturing male characters prominently…..you know, like in real life. All that other stuff like Minami-Ke, Hidamari Sketch and Manabi Straight (Word ending in “i” followed by adjective), they’re basically just the same goddamn show.
While I may not share your enthusiasm for the action side of this otherwise very good show, I don’t think the outcome is really incompatible with a second season. The final situation is quite similar to the one at the end of novel volume 1, although the anime took a different path to get there. I hope they’ll consider a sequel. And perhaps keep their dialogue writer but hire someone competent for the plot, if they decide to stray away from the original again.
I just watched episode 11. O_O Action-packed is all I can say.
P.S. Tower of Druaga ended with a major cliffhanger.
great show indeed
time to get hold of the novel somehow…
I was nagging for some Power Rangers toys when I was seven.
Really? The action was good? 0.o
The action…was kinda dodgy like it was missing a few frames in some parts. Car chase was kinda lol as well….especially when the 2 cars entered the Inner Sanctuary.
Well i preferred kurenai when it was slice-of-life in the dorm. The whole melancholic mood set after Murasaki was taken away felt too fast and forced. I’d like to see a remake of the show, more true to the source material.
I just wanna see a sequel. And from what I have read about the book, I like the changes in the anime. BTW, you must only know stupid 7 year olds.
My little sister is that smart. maybe smarter.
