I made my decision, placed the order and the goods have come! True to otaku hikikomori-style, I bought my new camera via the excellent Bargain City, which was selling the Canon 450D at standard retail price but threw in a bunch of freebies. The usual camera stores much-vaunted by the seasoned pros had lower prices but less freebies. For a person who does not have any existing equipment, the freebies made the difference. As did not having to lug the heavy drybox back from the city.

Bargain City delivers it to your doorstep, before collecting the money. That’s great.

Earlier in the day, I met up with this Iranian graduate student who had just completed his masters at my uni, he sold me a 100 mm f2.8 Canon macro lens that he originally planned on taking bug photos with but soon realised that to take bug photos, you have to let yourself roll in mud and get stung by them. The macro lens is not only great for closeups, but the 100 mm focal length and low aperture makes it a good prime lens for sharp portraits. Not that cheap though ugh. Costs about the equivalent of 8 1/8 figurines (does that make 1 full-sized figure?).

I’ll probably now get a flash (most likely 580 EX II) and possibly a 100-300 mm or similar telephoto zoom lens for the voyeuring.

Strangely enough, my compact Canon IXUS 800 IS had a memory card reading problem that Canon Service Centre claims will take 165 bucks to fix. So that can’t be used now.

It has been otaku custom to name their hardware. To recap, I currently have hardware named : Sylvana (Laptop), Yakumo (hard disk), Eri (hard disk), Tatiana (hard disk), Alister (hard disk), Tsukino (mp3 player). I’m wondering if I should name my lenses as well.

The preliminary list of names are: Sophia (Yakitate Japan), Akira (SA), Eve (Black Cat), Sephilia (Black Cat, though I’m vaguely remembering I already have something named this), CC (Code Geass), Miakis (Suikoden V), Cissnei (Crisis Core) and Luserina (Suikoden V).

Care to make suggestions? The funny thing is, all my newer gadgets are black. My laptop is matt black, mp3 player is glossy black, and now my camera is black. Back when Riuva was in its infancy, all my gadgets were red! Red camera, red mp3 player and red portable hard disk.

I did almost all my research online, at various forums and websites. If you’re from Singapore, Club Snap is the best forum.

Sasa, it’s my fifth penis! Panther, good idea. Will consider…

    Hi.

For the name, I suggest to name it after a lady from anime series. My DSLR camera was named after my ex-girlfriend and it worked like a lady, threw tandrums sometimes. So, I have to treat her gently at all times.

    Machines have temper sometimes.

So, um, is this new tech to take pictures of figures, or of a real life girl with a plush cow?

Lens names should take height into consideration. No external flash for the unit?

    Congratulations to your new equipment!
I guess itll take some time to get used to all the Freedom(?) you have with a DSLR instead of a compact camera.I bet your first pics will look crappier than the ones you shot with your old Canon.

Im looking forward to your next Figurine Review Mister!

    Hohoho.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
