Thanks to Crest for notifying me on this one.

Japanese stereotypes have always been present. We have the samurais who’d harakiri themselves in the face of dishonour and a free sex campaign going on in the country. Late controversial comedian George Carlin once said that anything can be funny, depending on how you structure your joke and exaggeration. It’s always fun to joke about stereotypes that are overly exaggerated, like how the high tech Japanese will one day create gundams to take over the world. Apparently Electronic Arts thinks so too.

Take a look at the newly revealed faction of their upcoming Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 game here, thereafter take a look at the unit names here. To prevent any accusations of being assholes, EA has taken measures to subtly name the new faction as “THE EMPIRE OF THE RISING SUN”. Oh no no, the rising sun has nothing to do with Japan and the flag just happens to look somewhat similar.

In case you aren’t sure what I’m trying to say here, I think it’s outrageously hilarious. They have this BattleTech-Goliath-looking mecha they call King Oni which shoots death beams and stomps tanks! They have these Tankbuster units that look like farmers with rakes, except that instead of rakes they carry plasma beams of tank destruction mayhem. Observe the design for the farmer straw hats and you’ll realise that instead of an accessory to block out the UV rays while toiling in the fields, those are hovering flying saucers that evolves the farmer Tankbuster into armour mutilating pillboxes. The Jet Tengu/Mecha Tengu unit is basically a jet that is able to turn into a mecha in mid air, just disappointingly short of some bonus singing tracks to go with it.

If those weren’t shittingly unbelievable enough, EA has included a Gatekeeper in the game by the name of YURIKO OMEGA DX MK-III. Okay, I added in the DX MK-III myself. So what is this Yuriko Omega? According to the EA website, “Shockingly, she appears no older than 18 years of age.” I think they meant for sarcasm in that statement, because the character design tells me she’s one badass evil witch ready to rip your skulls apart and savour your neuro juices. To further quote the EA website,

“• The power of the mind — Yuriko needs no conventional weapons, for her mind is more than enough. She may levitate and crush even the largest tank; topple even the most firmly-rooted structure; cast aside entire infantry platoons; and drag even the most stubborn aircraft down into the ground.

• Levitation — As if to flaunt her psychic ability, Yuriko appears never to resort to normal-human means of locomotion. Instead, she hovers aloft roughly a meter off the ground. Apart from being impressive, this means she can traverse land and sea with equal disregard.

• Psychokinetic burst — In theory, a platoon of trained soldiers should be capable of overwhelming Yuriko Omega. In practice, Yuriko Omega seems able to occasionally channel massive amounts of psionic energy into some sort of attack that sends men flying as if from an incredible explosion.

• Sole survivor — It is believed that Yuriko Omega is indeed a unique individual in the Imperial military, rather than a member of a group, as there appears to be only one of her. There is no compelling reason to believe that carbon-copied “clones” of her exist, as only one of her has ever been spotted in a single place.”

Guess what? She floats because feet-on-ground is too stupid for her great psychokinesis powers! She can conjure a psionic ball to flip and crush tanks! When surrounded by infantry fire, she can even fart psychic pulses of the rising sun!

I don’t know what those game designers at EA have been watching on their anime channel, but it is apparent that all these concepts were shat out of one mass orgy booze party.

“Yo dooood, I just had this awwwwsome idea. Insteeaadd ov ally vs sovviettssss all the tymmmgh, let’s recreaate WW2!”

“OH Em GEE! Rez getch macrossh!”

“Stoooopeed! I weell progemmm dees big goondam!”

“HAAA! ai ween! i make a japanis skuuuu girll to shit saikik waves!”

Thus, the Empire of the Rising Sun was born.

And I am so buying it.

HOLY SHIT, FARMERS THAT CAN SHOOT LAZRS? I AM SO BUYING THIS GAME.

On a side note, her Psychokinetic burst appears to be somewhat based off Yuri. -1 originality point.

What’s your point again? That they’re being racist? That it’s stupid? Neither are new nor anything to write home about.

Nobody cares when they stereotype Russians, but when it’s the Japanese, suddenly they’ve gone too far.

A friend of mine just pointed out that ‘ko’ means ‘child’, so Yuriko might mean that Yuriko Omega is the child of Yuri. Wow, awesome mix of names across languages.

Uhhhhhhhh… lemme see if I got that right… EA just put a mahou shoujo in a real time strategy game with tanks, choppers, airplanes and nukes!?

  21. 21 Lumin 1 comment

Unfortunately, this will be the first Red Alert game that won’t have nukes. If you sit back and think for a minute you would realize there is a very good reason.

  22. 22 Blitz 1 comment

Lol I just got that Lumin which is a horrible reason. Cause if they had nukes in this game it would be even more racist if you used it against the rising sun.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
