Music Review: Canvas by Coolon – Do not Watch the PV of this Song!!

PVs, or MTVs, as they are more commonly known, are like steroids – they artificially enhance. A good song draws an image in the listener’s mind. For example, Break the Cocoon gives me the image of an emotional girl screaming sadly in an enclosed room, while Taiyou no Mannaka e’s is one of a young adult jumping around. It differs for each listener but good songs generally do produce an image.

MTVs, and that goes for anime OPs and EDs as well, have ready-made imageries that pop up in the listener/viewer’s mind once he has seen it once. Songs like Jigoku Shoujo’s Sakasama no Chou makes great use of this. An above average song was made into a great song because the loli-gothic pretty Enma Ai and her cherry (no not that type) pops up everytime I hear it. The "burning" type anime OP also abuses this artificial imagery. That’s why anime OPs normally sound like crap when heard on its own.

MTVs/PVs increase the attractiveness of a song by forcefeeding the listener with set images, so even if the song itself is not good enough to produce images, the listener still gets it and thus can enjoy it better.

So what is the point of the above three paras and how are they related to Canvas by Coolon, better known as the final ending song of Eureka seveN, an Ultima-class anime?

The point is, Canvas is a great song. But not good enough to form images. Yet with the help of the awesomely sentimental ED animation, it is propelled to the status of a supersong. But I had the misfortune of watching the PV on youtube  and everything came crashing down. Other than the fact that the PV was utter bullshit, the quartet that sings Canvas have a horrible image. They are the usual wannabe-rappers, in their hip-hop clothes, doing hip-hop poses and just look plain stupid. Some people can pull it off and look good, but others, please just do what suits you. I really want that memory-erasing flower used in episode 2 of Himawari.

Looks are nothing when it comes to the song. I like Yoriko even if she’s fat and ugly. But it’s a disgrace to the song when they go out of their way to pretend, and worse, do a bad job of it.

Anyway, onto Canvas itself, it’s a pop/rap/R & B type song that’s so popular these days. I have duly translated the lyrics as usual. It isn’t 100% right, but more or less there I guess. I hate translating rap songs.

Canvas by Coolon Lyrics

kawaranai mainichi kara nukedashitakute hitori arukidashita
From this never changing days, I wanted to escape, so I stepped out on my own.
kono te ni tsukanda chizu wo hirogereba tadoritsukeruto omottanda
If I spread this map in my hands, I thought I could struggle to somewhere
tada ga mushara ni natte susumu koto dake ni torawarete
But I just become vexed, and unable to progress
ashimoto mo mienakunatte tsumazuite asphalt ni korogatte
I became unable to see my steps, and stumbled on the asphalt, rolling
sora wo miagete hitomi wo tojite
I look up at the sky with my eyes closed
fukanda minna no egao ni kizukasaretayo
I was hurt by the everyone’s empty smiles

furikaeru to itsumo kawaranai basho ga aru kara
Always when I look back, there’s a never-changing place
donna gyakkyou mo fuan mo koete yukeru
So I can overcome whatever adversity and unease
hateshinai michi naru michi e to fumidaseru
And I’ll be able to step out into the never-ending unknown road

But I misunderstood, I thought I became strong alone
jibun no yowasa mitsuke kasumu ikute demo hikari sashite mina no kao wo ukaberu
I realised my own weakness and got confused but light shone and I saw everyone’s faces
senaka osu koe ga atte koso koete yuku koto ga dekitanda ne
Since there’s a voice that pushes me ,for sure I have now passed through
yatto wakatta toki kara wa yabure kansha no kimochi mo mebae
Finally when I understood and broke my shell apart, feelings of gratitude sprout

itsumo itsumo tsukkoshitte sou yatte susumu my way
Always I rush and do it my way
katte datte muri ni iji ni natte
Selfishly, unreasonably and stubbornly
koetai kabe tobikoeru hane hoshikattanda tsuyoku naru tame
The wall I want to overcome, the wings to fly over, for the strength I desired
tachiagatte mae e mae e taoretatte nando datte
I stand up and move forward, no matter how many times I fall
datte dare nimo aru hazu "kaereru basho"
Cos everyone should have a place to return to
itsumo itsumo datte sou yori sou kizuna
A bond that can be relied on always
Hands in the air
Hands in the air todoku eeru mune ni saki e
Hands in the air let out a yell and stick your chest out

I can overcome whatever adversity and unease
hateshinai michi naru michi e to fumidaseru
And I’ll be able to step out into the never-ending unknown road

owaranai tabi no tochuu de tachi tomatte
On the never-ending journey, I stopped
kizukasareta kakegae no nai mono
The wounded irreplaceable things
mune no honou afuredasu hodo
The flame in my heart bursts forth
dokomademo ikeru hazu sa
I probably could go anywhere and everywhere
hito wo mamoreru tsuyosa itsuka kono te ni
The power to protect people, someday I’ll have

  • This song is among the top of my playlist ever since I got it from you. So it’s good. heh

  • I’ve just watched the COOLON PV you mentioned. I agree it sucks. But do you know what’s the problem that’s making them look like shitty rapper wannabes? Their hands are moving for no particular reason! For a quartet, you’d expect at least one guy who can pull it off. Freakin’ none could make it.

When a rapper moves his hands to form whatever shit formation with his fingers, he moves with the beat or has some relevance to what he’s singing/rapping. Not swing your arms in any random shit way that comes to your mind like what COOLON did. That makes you look like a wannabe. A retard wannabe.

For a better example, I propose using HOME MADE Kazoku’s Shounen Heart PV: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ymqwprR-rk

Theirs look a lot more natural.

  • i love the song too, ty =)

  • One example of an anime OP which is mediocre on its own but is catapulted to glory by a well-matched animation sequence is “Bomb A Head! V” by m.c.A.T, which is the OP of Tenjou Tenge!.

  • “bomb a head!” kicks ass. anyone got the music, that they wouldn’t mind sharing?
even home made kazoku do kind of look retarded, but they look cool while doing it.i don’t get rying to act like its rap, when it’s not.

  • Yes, that was a nice opinion you got there. Let’s look at the term “wannabe”. It’s when someone wants to be a rapper/hip-hop artist. As you can see by MY definition a wannabe can no longer applies when the person doesn’t want to a rapper/hip-hop artist or already becomes one. Everyone wears what they like, so if Coolon wants to wear the style of Snoop Dogg or Tupac Shakur then let them. One last thing, if pretending is so wrong then I don’t want to live in a world like that. ~Ignorance is Bliss

P.S. I would love to lift, if a lift board is made.

  • i love this song. it’s the best song ever. only if they had this song on i’tunes. i would so buy it. it’s worth every penny.

  • i absolutly love this song. it’s the best song ever. only if they had this song on i-tunes. i would so buy it, it’s worth every penny.
