I appear to be the only person I know or have heard of that sat through all half a year’s worth of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. It ended last Saturday with an ending as exciting as flat coke. Pity. For an anime of 26 episodes, there sure was a hell lot of pointless time wasted, resulting in the final conflict being uninteresting, many characters neglected and not given enough screen time.

One of the most intriguing characters is Gekka of course, the pink blob of a sushi-eating jellyfish machine. Turns out she’s the god of some far off water planet and has the powers of teleportation, life-creation, lasers and lots more. The final battle and whole point of having the Happy Family plan was to prevent the Kougyoukuou (Desire King literally), a nice guy voiced by Tomokazu Seki, from accidentally destroying Earth in his quest to win Gekka as his bride.

Desire King is so powerful that he might accidentally fart and cause a tsunami the size of Japan, so that’s why people fear him. The final arc of the series involves him waiting for Gekka to provide the answer while Gekka’s spawn (she can make life remember) back from her home planet wreak havoc by possessing people. Kyouka got possessed and almost killed herself, but via good old cheering by the other family members, possessed the water aliens instead since she’s a spirit demon anyway. Then stuff happen and games get played and the result is Desireking goes on another long tour of the cosmos, after which he will return to marry Gekka who has confessed she does like him after all, but was just too shy to admit it.

The main problem with this show is how way too many characters are introduced and make cameo appearances, yet aren’t really useful. People like Shinigami 4, Raichou, Ms Million etc all make very frequent appearances yet in the end, didn’t play a part in the plot. It’s quite disappointing as Ms Million is obviously the older sister of Chika and Yuuka, and Raichou is supposed to be some badass evildoer.

Even among the main characters, there wasn’t enough focus on Ginka, who didn’t even get his own episode to show his backstory. This really should’ve been a 52 episode show with more Gekka.

It seems that we have a lack of comedies with no fan service these days. The unique character design of KKN also stands out, being so cartoony. Too bad it just didn’t turn out that good in the end. Anyone else finished watching this show?

On a side note, Tales of the Abyss anime is real weird with the super striking voice of SUNABOUZU himself as the main character, I can’t help but think that red haired pretty boy is going to start grabbing tits and digging in sand.

I sat through the “hell” of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki as well if it makes you feel any better. Pretty much agree with you tj that they either needed to extend the series or shorten the massive cast; although I do give props for them scoring B-A ranked seiyuus for “the character of the week”. Tomokazu Seki as the “end boss” was pretty funny and definitely not something I expected in my wildest dreams…

    .. then again with KKN, it seems throwing common senses out the door is the only way to truly enjoy the series ^^;;

I’m waiting for the subs of the final two episodes but I’ve liked it for the most part. Yes it does have a large cast and they really don’t do anything with them but oh well. I’ve thought it has been one of the zaniest if not the craziest show I’ve ever seen and I have to give it serious props for that.

At 24. Intend to finish it. Now that you mention it, Ginka didn’t get his own episode. Not that I’m very interested ~_~ The fact that Raichou was so afraid of Million took me aback. I thought she was some super evil scheming villian or something

At 24, and intending to finish it as well since it has been pretty good so far if you look at it on a single-episode basis.

I agree though, the series needs far more Gekka. Why I could fap to her human form all day. Hot as all hell. Chika too.

I made it to 18, I think, and stopped. I was kinda bored for most of the episodes. Thanks for the writeup, though I don’t think I’ll pick the series back up.

It’s enjoyable without using common sense. Finished and did enjoy it to that extent.

Waiting for subs to finish it. It’s a gag show! If you’re watching for plot then you’re probably Doing it Wrong.

I didn’t watch it for plot duh I watched it for hearting warming comedy. I suppose it didnt fail too badly in that aspect.

well its not that bad. and i think a second season would be nice to answer all the hanging ends. i really dont think that the ones who made the anime would end the series with kyouka unable to find out who she really is.

Mmm… the last 2 eps took quite a while to get subbed xD

Yes. this is definitely not plotty based anime xD
just comedic and time passing, and thinking back on it, i’m surprised i managed to sit through it all, the last arc was alright though.

i still don’t like the intro and kyouka’s ending though -_-

I finished the whole thing and was disappointed when there was no episode on Ginka’s background. He’s my favorite character :’D I love his weirdness and his sweetness. I keep reading that he ran away from his family when they killed the girl he loved, but i never saw that in the show or caught a hint of dialogue that even alluded to that. Does anyone know if that’s in the novel or if i missed it or something?

As for the plot…I liked that it centers around family but I kinda got annoyed with Kyouka and Yuuka towards the end. Too much crying and sap for my taste…BUT I really like the show, it’s a real good thing to watch if you wanna waste time and laugh at random things XD

you guys are way to critical of this show. It was funny in the way it ripped on sailor moon and even the santa clause episode when it seemed sorta dragon ballesk. It was funny and something to pass the time. Its an idea and i bet that for all the haters, none of you have a clever or even half way intelligent idea for an anime series, for all the crap that is out there this was okay.

I personally loved this anime. I have watched the entire thing around 6 times now. Sure some of the of the characters didn’t get enough airtime, but that could easily be solved with a Season 2. Also, Kyouka and Chicka were my favorite characters. I didn’t really like how Grim Reapers character turned out, she started all badass then she ended up eating out of a garbage can with her dad, I mean WTF? I honestly don’t see why you are so hard on it, sure it has a couple down points, but so does everything. There will never be any anime to appease every single fan. So even though you didn’t care for it doesn’t mean it’s horrible.

I thoroughly enjoyed Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. Although, this may be coming from a teens point of view compared to however old you are. I think that the show was spastic and rushed but it was good anyway. Maybe the point of the show was no point at all. It may have been just to make people smile. When I had been watching the last few episodes, I was really upset. After watching them, I was alot happier. So, yes you’re review was quite accurate, but honestly, it made you smile didn’t it? It made you laugh didn’t it? So, what’s the problem? Sometimes, isn’t it okay to like something because it was silly or pointless? Like playing with toys when you were a kid. How is this any different? If you think about it, it really isn’t. So, lighten up! Enjoy things a little!

This is the most amazing comedy anime I have watched so far, and believe me, I have watched lots of them!
Yes there was no point and no plot in this anime, but that’s the secret ingredient for a successful comedy, and that was it was all this anime was about - make you laugh. If it gets too serious and gets a plot, the comedy tends to tear off.
I personally really want a second season and I hope they will make another one.I am not necessarily interested in the back stories of the characters, but more on the comedy itself.Laughing at random things wasn’t so fun in a long time.
My personal favorite is the crazed kitty :) I hate her and I love her in the same time. She keeps the show running and is quite vivacious.
All in all, this was an amazing show for me and if you know others in the same genre please let me know.

    Have fun!
