I’ll be posting "Weekend Reviews" on a weekly basis to comment and evaluate the various episodes that I’ve caught for the week. I’m at a point in anime life to decide whether a series is good, bad or ugly and whether I should be following them. For this season, I play safe by watching more anime because last season was a disaster for me as I picked too few and dropped almost all of the series before the season ended. Looking at my list for last season, Strike Witches (SW) emerged as the champion because it was one of the few series that I finished watching (the other being Ikkitousen GG) and SW definitely beat Ikkitousen GG hands down so it won with loli pantsu greatness.
Ga-Rei Zero Episode 2
Judging from the first 2 episodes, this IS TEH series for the season for me. Plot twists, good versus evil, and an awesome katana kick-ass protagonist all kept me on the edge of the seat. Series with plot twists catch my attention (just like Claymore though it’s becoming more predictable now) but Ga-Rei Zero is totally unpredictable as I have no clue what is for episode 3. The only pattern that I see is change; characters are always changing and the plot always changes. Only the ending for the first 2 episodes has some semblance, that is where the antagonist did the final slash to pk the others but what’s next?
Verdict: To satisfy my curious plot hungry appetite, this is a definite must watch.
Rosario+Vampire Capu 2 - Episode 2 & 3
There’s a limit to how ridiculous the show can get and it’s about to drop into the abyss where its able to compete with Ikkitousen GG in the same category; "the shittest anime of the season" category. Pantsu censored by bats, that’s the end to it right? Then you’re very wrong. Now the bats are creatively censoring pantsu through a series of actions. They block pantsu in upside down poses, horizontally, vertically and worse, they have that stupid smile on their face that I no longer find the whole show funny. Take a look at episode 3! You’ll see laser attacks coming from the b00bs of one of the parents, what crap is this?!?! This is the worse attack coming from anime history, ever.
Verdict: Rosario+Vampire Capu 2 is moved to the "Drop" list.
Shikabane Hime Aka Episode 2 & 3
I wasn’t impressed with episode 1 but episode 2 and 3 were heart warming enough for me to keep watching. Shikabane Hime Aka has a dark plot but it’s boring. It takes too long for an episode to build up suspense and I’m always bored with the first half of the show. What save it from entering my "drop" list is it’s conclusion; it’s rather touching and play on human emotions. I actually sympathize and feel for the various antagonists at the end of episode 2 and 3.
Verdict: Need to catch more episodes before I make a decision; to follow or not to follow.
Skip Beat Episode 1
Caught Skip Beat on Animania on Firdays, 11pm. Skip Beat is hilarious but not as hilarious as Tora Dora. The plot is cliche, where girl gets motivated to beat guy because he cheated on her. There’s lots of play on facial expressions and exaggeration to achieve the desire comic effects but this series is just not for me. It’s mediocre and I don’t find it anywhere as funny as Tora Dora.
Verdict: Drop due to lack of time and it’s mediocre plot, sorry pals. >.>
Tora Dora Episode 2
I caught 2 episodes of Tora Dora on Animania, every Thursday, 11.30pm. The English subs are ok and I think following a series on plasma tv is great; good sound effects, nice visuals etc. Episode 1 was hilarious with an interesting plot where 2 outcasts became friends out of the blue. There were moments where I burst out laughing, especially the part with the parrot, and it got my hopes up for episode 2. I need some light hearted series to balance the all so GAR shows that I’m watching and Tora Dora is one where it’s hilarious because the characters do unexpected moves that I find funny. Now compare this with Rosario+Vampire Capu 2 where its funny because the characters are doing lame actions. Simply put, I’m laughing at the stupidity of the characters in Rosario+Vampire Capu 2.
Verdict: Following Tora Dora on Animania because of its interesting plot and many hilarious moments. Also, for the love of my plasma TV. Go plasma! ~<3
Vampire Knight Guilty Episode 1 & 2
I dropped season 1 after watching episode 1-6 because I was being economical and trying to save time. Noting that season 1 followed the manga closely, I dropped it so that I can utilize my time more efficiently because I felt that the anime should be running closely along the lines of the manga. This time, I caught the first 2 episodes of Vampire Knight Guilty and felt that it was good. Plot wise it still follows the manga quite closely, romance is still in the air and the plot has developed to the parts that are more interesting and where there is more action to come.
On a side note, I prefer season’s 2 OP as compared to season 1’s OP. Every character is portrayed with more sexiness and I prefer Yuki running with a book (season 2 OP) as compared to her running aimlessly and then taking a drink (season 1 OP). XD
Verdict: I have no idea why but I fell for vampire Knight Guilty and will be following it.
PS: For season 2, I back track and caught the remaining that I had left out from season 1.
Yozakura Quartet Episode 2
I would classify Yozakura Quartet as a simple supernatural series. The plot basically revolves around a group of beings (humans and supernatural) working together to make the city a safe place for both classes to live in. Set in a world where humans and the supernatural seek to co-exist, the group will patrol the city while the male protagonist sends all evil supernatural beings to the other world through "tuning". No, this is not Air Gear, don’t be mistaken. The series is still fresh out from the oven and there are still more character introduction in episode 2; the most recent being the zombie girl that just arrived in the city. The ending for episode 2 is predictable, fitting for a simple story that paints an optimistic picture of co-existent for the supernatural and human kind.

Verdict: It’s a simple (plot and effects) series with no earth shattering content. I’ll keep watching till I get sick of the vicious cycle where the group meets supernatural, chases supernatural, and then eliminates the supernatural.
Conclusion for the week
With Shikabane Hime, Ga-Rei Zero and Yozakura Quartet, it seems like I’m for the various action cum supernatural series for not only this week, but for the whole season. Where’s Chaos Head? Why isn’t it on my list? I’m actually very excited with Chaos Head at first because I’m for girl power series (where GAR lead pawns all) but after glancing at the series a little, I noted that there are computers involved and it didn’t excite me at all. Series that play around with the idea of the computer or cyborgs like Texhnolyze and Jigoku Shoujo, do not excite me at all. Hence, I decided to stay away from Chaos Head.

Wow, more episodes for Shikabane Hime? At this rate by the time you make your decision, you will finish the series since it is only 13 episodes.
I kind of like Y-Quartet.
As for Ga-rei I advise you to think about the sentence which appears on the end of every episode saying something like: “Will you kill somebody you love for love” and a thick which stends by it. I think this promises a great anime:D
@Panther
To aid my decision making process, I will pick up more episodes since a season 2 for Shikabane Hime
has been announced. XD
@would
I’m sure there’s more to those sentences but I’ll adopt the wait and see attitude to see how they fall into place.
You love lolis in pantsu? Wow, I didn’t know that.
Love for loli in pantsu? That sounds more like Shin than me. XD
Last season SW, was my choice because it was the better of all evils. (::
you forgot about Toaru Majutsu index, chaos;head, akane iro somaru saka….
Index, Tytania, Ga-rei, Gundam 00, Michiko to Hatchin, and plenty of others.. plenty.
What, no Ef and CLANNAD?
@Stifler,
I’m covering those.
Strangely, Ascaloth doesn’t like the series that I enjoy watching and I don’t enjoy the series that he’s following. I haven’t even caught an episode of Ef or Clannad or Nodame yet.
Nooooo! But Skip Beat episode 1 is nothing compared to the awesomeness of the later arcs D: Watch a few more eps and decide? I’m sure you’ll be in for a surprise with the later episodes, and although I’m enjoying ToraDora myself, I still say that it won’t top the AWESOMENESS of Skip Beat, especially once you see how the characters are fleshed out later on, and how the story develops into something far more intricate (and make you exclaim “wow, I didn’t know showbiz is this hard/cool/awesome/etc”).
Then again if you don’t like the “let’s KICK ASS in SHOWBIZ” premise then it can’t be helped I guess -___-
oh wait, better yet… just read the Skip Beat manga, if you have time
The anime is a good adaptation of the manga, but it also made the comedic parts over-exaggerated and not so funny, hehe ^^;
Okie jen, I’ll try the manga instead.
Super manga reader reporting to Skip Beat for marathon session. ^__________^
