WTF Ga-Rei is Shit.

Loading ...After the runaway awesomeness of the first 3 Ga-rei Zero anime episodes, many including myself have felt compelled to pick up the manga. After all, GRZ is the prequel and won’t be as awesome without any knowledge of the actual story right? FUCKING WROOOONG!
The original manga is retarded. No wonder AIC didn’t make it into an anime, but basically revamped the entire story as a prequel. There are actually people on the blogosphere praising the manga, which I find quite unbelievable. They must be Narutards. Hell, even Naruto and Bleach is better than Ga-rei! To get an idea of how bad Ga-rei is, you must realise I rate it even lower than the likes of ew Samurai Deeper Kyo, D Gay Man and Get Backers. And man, those were shit already.
I hope this realisation that the source material is trash won’t affect my enjoyment of the anime now.
So let’s get to the main point. Why is this manga shit?
The art is rubbish, the character designs are mediocre and the action sucks. I don’t expect One Piece standard art but surely Garei is just piss poor! I realise many out there don’t realise why One Piece has the best manga art, alongside the likes of Vagabond, Shin Angyoonshi etc. These manga have a strong unique art style that is beautiful yet instantly recognisable, and most importantly, they have great detail, from the characters to especially, the background. The background art of the series I’ve listed are so intricately detailed, it’s sometimes like a manga photograph. Ga-rei’s art is of average quality, and has similarity to those traditional Japanese wood block prints, with thick outlines, little details and little to no texture. The character designs are cookie cutter and stale. In fact, I think most new Japanese manga have rather poor art, with the exception of those where the author and artist are two specialised individuals.
The action sucks, as I said. Partly due to the bad art, since the ability to draw action is a key part of mangaka skill. As much as Getbackers sucked, the action was well-drawn. Hunter x Hunter has shocking art, but the battles are still the best the manga world has seen. Garei is all frames of slashing or monsters getting chopped up or some cliche battle move that we’ve seen dozens of times. The action in the anime is fucking intense and well-choreographed and probably heightens the expectation for the manga, which it spectacularly fails to deliver. From the blood-churning sword dances of Yomi and Kagura in the anime, to the silly Iron (literally) bashing of the manga.. ew.
The main characters are dull. The wicked EVIL awesome Yomi in the anime became some Yuuko (XXXholic) clone, and weak as shit in the manga. Dies easily in a huge anticlimax. The main character is the worst, he makes Naruto look like Takemoto from Honey and Clover in terms of character development. In fact, he has as deep a character as one of the Bleach Hollows. Kagura is cute but weak as shit, which is odd if you have seen the prequel. The only good manga character is Izuna, and the fact he’s there is a fucking spoiler for the anime.
The story is so full of cliches it reads like a 3rd rate manga. Which it is of course. I have this friend who reads nothing but manga and doesn’t watch anime. He used to be doing alright, but now that all the talents are shifting towards anime, and original anime stories are far and away better than the typical manga fare, my poor friend has been stuck championing the likes of Soul Eater manga as the best. Soul Eater is another example of how an average albeit stylish manga was made into pure awesome by a good anime studio, Bones in this case. Ouran is a great example as well.
It sickens me that the manga scene is piss poor these days and the one good new one was cancelled (Mx0). Will we see a trend of spliting up the work between writers and artists, like in the west? Since there are tonnes of people who can’t draw but can plot an excellent story, and tonnes of people who can’t write for nuts but draw like Picasso. Not everyone is a genius like Oda Eiichirou and Takehiko Inoue.
Off the top of my head, those who can draw but can’t write - Yabuki Kentarou (Black Cat, ToLoveRu), the Deathnote/Hikaru no Go guy, the Speed Grapher manga guy, the Koreans who did Shin Angyo Onshi, the Get Backers artist, OH GREAT (best example), Range Murata, Akamatsu Ken. And we have those who are godly at writing but can’t draw for shit - Hunter x Hunter man for one.
Finally, Ga Rei manga is rubbish. DO NOT READ!!!

Forgot to mention Eden as one of the great art, great writing manga. And Gantz as great action manga.
My only gripe with the anime is the rolling CG lizards. Good god what the hell made them think that was a good idea?

LOL. What’s funny is that I almost didn’t want to watch the anime due to the synopsis of the manga, but I’m glad you’ve confirmed that for me. I can’t imagine any story worse than Bleach/Naruto, so…

Upon seeing episode 4, this confirms my point. Ep 4 has the iron and the Byakuei chomping scenes, and indeed they look good in the anime.
Slightly off topic but it is hard for me to find people, like myself, who like the art style of One Piece.
Everyone has their own opinions, and I actually laughed out loud when I read that One Piece has the best art. I read a short way into it and thought maybe he got little kid drunk, smacked him in the head with a brick and then asked him to come up with his characters. And quite frankly Mashimo Hiro’s Fairy Tail also makes it look like it was drawn by said child.
And you’re pissed off that Izuna’s presence is a spoiler for the anime? Well you’ll have to excuse him for not being able to see 3 years in the future when he started writing it. I’m guessing when someone around you mentioned them making the Star Wars prequels you were thinking WHOA WHOA WHOA FUCK THAT! I KNOW HOW IT FUCKING ENDS! Or cursing Tolkien for spoiling the Lord of the Rings movies for you.
Ga-rei’s art was very rough in the beginning but is slowly getting better, again it’s just personal preference. After reading what you wrote I checked Vagabond for the first time and found the art too detailed for my liking.
And I think ga-rei is Segawa Hajime’s first manga. Was “Wanted!” Oda’s first work? If so..Compare the two before you say he’s better.

Nobody’s pissed off here except you. You can’t appreciate art and don’t understand how manga is drawn. If you question industry insiders and people who can actually draw, you will find that One Piece’s art is actually rated extremely highly and many a mangaka have sighed that they are not capable of reaching Oda’s standards.
I guess you must be reading Onemanga.com, you fucking cheapskate. Fair enough, but we buy our manga and have to pay money.
So when you say artwork sucks and the story is lame its proper critique, but when someone else says similar things about manga you like I can’t appreciate art? I never said Inoue was a bad artists, you mentioned Vagabond and I checked it out and it wasn’t too detailed for my liking, I never said it was bad. And FYI I do buy my manga, but im not going to go out at 10pm at night trying to find a store open just so I can spend money based on others opinions. Onemanga is good for two things, getting an idea of if you like a manga, and for people like me who can’t read japanese,korean,chinese can read manga that has yet to be licensed in English (Which I think Ga-rei is in the process of being licensed by tokyopop, atleast last time I checked)
I know many mangaka have their own styles and I know Oda pretty much created his own, but it’s my opinion that Mashimo took it to another level.
Anyway, I don’t usually post my thoughts online but I guess the the title caught my attention enough. For anyone that gives a shit, yes the anime is better than the manga, but it’s far from “Shit”. Read it for yourself and don’t take his or my opinion on it as scripture. Even if you like all the same manga as tj_han you could still like Ga-rei..Seems we disagree on a lot, but still think the same of SDK and Mx0.

I was watching episode 2 when i realised the chinese characters during the ‘break’ looked suspiciously like one of the manga I bought and lo and behold, I actually have a copy of Book 1 of Gai-Rei so I flipped through it. Got to agree that the anime is much better but the manga is just so-so. Guess that’s why I didn’t continue buying book 2 onwards.
