As usual, dorama. But this time, Soshi has launched the counterattack of the Rational Bloggers.

Seriously, wow even I’m impressed by the rabid fanboyism of the complaining ones. First off, they paid 118 bucks for the ticket, which is in itself a really retarded act when all they had to do was pretend to be one of those cool bloggers and get a free media pass. RIGHT? Of course not, I’m kidding. All media passes were in the hands of accredited media such as erm bloggers who didn’t want to queue up. That aside, since it’s an old issue, we have people complaining that they didn’t get personal photos taken WITH May’n, and get their item signed. Ok, I feel for you. In fact, your plight is so so saddening that I’m withdrawing my donations to the AIDS-ridden children of Africa and sending them to you! But you have to first send me 200 dollars to my pay pal account so I can settle the admin fees. I will send you the money soon I promise.

There was this one guy from Penang who rushed up and kowtowed and screamed or something. Awesome, we love such manly behaviour. After all, kowtowing is the ultimate sign of respect right? I bet May’n was super impressed by the dedication of this fan.

Yeah right. She probably thinks he’s a psycho stalker who lives in a basement with internet connection. Make that a Singaporean basement, even though he hails from foreign seas. Thanks for that image boost dude!

I don’t understand boyband fangirls, high school musical fan girls, F4 fangirls who faint/scream/send hate mail to innocent Koizora reviewers. I thought otaku were a bit better than these girls, I mean nerds are smart and logical right? You guys proved me wrong.

Some random guy said it was because ODEX organised the signing session, that’s why they purposely pissed off the fans. RIGHT… ODEX also caused the credit crunch, Iraq War and 911 bombings.

OOPS I went off topic. My real subject of this post is: The reason (fucking logical and obvious one too) why management of May’n disallows photos and videos.

That’s because they don’t trust you guys with it. Will you post up unglamourous photos of her? Possibly. Probably! Look at all the bloggers’ pictures of her! Some have oily faces, weird facial expressions, and most just don’t show her in good light. When people sing, their mouth contorts in weird shapes that look ok live but really silly in a still picture. To maintain her image, she needs to have most of the pictures on the web of her post-processed to look like the Galactic fairy. I see the pictures our dear bloggers took and if I were her, a celebrity whose ricebowl half-depends on my good looks, I would freak out.

A big reason is also because she’s not that good-looking. She has her beauty angles like everyone does, but generally she’s below par for a celebrity. Hence they would like to play down that aspect of her. She’s no Hamasaki Ayumi, who has undergone plastic surgery more times I have blogged on this site.

The regular folks don’t get to have pictures while the real media can take, is a common complaint. This is generally because the media (real ones) select the nice pictures (unless they are tabloids like the Sun) and they have people doing post processing.

You might think that despite the rule, people still took pictures and so the rule is retarded. But that mode of thinking is retarded because if they didn’t have the rule, far more people would’ve taken the pictures. At least they expressing their intent reduced the numbers somewhat. You might also think that the ugly pics represent the truth, and it is your job as the anime blogger of Media Pass, to unveil the truth. Then that itself is the reason why their management refuses to let you take photos, n00b.

Aniki allows photos? Of course, damn it, he doesn’t rely on his face as much. He can look like a panda and still draw the crowd. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers look like uncle drug addicts but still draw millions. There’s a difference between men and women.

If you fanfaggots are truly fans of May’n, you would attempt to upload to the Internet only good photos of her, and stop clogging up Google with your trashy pictures, silly complaints, and retarded arguments. Danny Choo says bloggers must not flame people, but seriously, what the hell, I am BATMAN OF BLOGGING.

    This.

No photo is always a disappointment but people gotta respect the rules. That said it’s okay to be hatin’ on the intarwebs cuz that’s SOP but that just make you look stupid than actually make a point.

Trusting people with the photos is nonsense. What is less nonsense is posting candid shots where they look bad and create a bad image. Celebrities like these live on image. But Aniki looks better than someone his age anyways, so whatev.

Ah, thanks for commenting on my blog. But seriously, I believe that this issue is over hyped.

For those people who are saddened by the lack of interactivity with May’n, it’s most likely not her fault. From my experience, most of the time, it’s the stars who are generous and kind while their managers are the strict ones.

Actar, it’s not exactly over-hyped, rather its something these people need to learn. In this age of the Internet, cheap cameras, each individual is empowered enough to cause damage to these celebrities. With power comes responsibility of course, which these fans do not have. Also, I have added you to my blog roll, all SG based bloggers are under the “Bard” jobclass, cos you’re “Sing”aporeans.

    Omo: Yup, people are retarded.

That Penang guy was totally nuts…ah well, already went for dinner.

Got to agree with you on the image thing. That’s why I took a picture of her far far far far away just to highlight the size of the crowd and the stage =p

Perhaps the best compromise would be lousy video shots(youtube!) so blurred you can’t see her but just hear her (that’s the key thing right? To hear her sing. Actually performance reserved for those who went down =p)

I’m so glad I didnt pay for a VIP pass and watched the whole thing from the balcony above. I was satisfied enough to yell KEKKON SHITEKURE at the end of Northern Cross.

As I’ve explained it before in my own blog (http://www.seiyuu3.net/2008/08/19/489/), it’s because Japan has portrait rights laws and the entertainment industry operates under this assumption. Of coures image control is also part of it, but when *the law* gives you this power of control over your face appearing in photos, expect them to be anal about it.

  19. 19 Wreckidigidy 12 comments

Aniki who had a repertoire of 1000 over songs ruled a novice like May’n anyday…*slowly incurred the wrath of rabid May’n fans*

Seriously if you attend a concert locally, you can take no photos nor video as well, so stop grumbling…

I do feel for those who had spent $118 for that measly 6 songs and get nothing but a hand replicated whiteboatd (Aniki even wrote down the name of the person who was asking him for signature…but I wonder if he had to sign as many autographs)

All in all we shouldn’t berate the organizers who had done so much to make the event as professional and successful as it is…I’m already looking forward to the next year’s event.

PS: Got wind of the Japanese representatives from Kotobukiya had scorned at the inadequate capacity of this event…Somehow if you guys had given us that real number of exclusives or other authentic support like you have with events like Wonder Festival, I’m sure AFA would blow your mind

I thought it was the perfect riposte to those cheap-skate fans. After all, most of them watched it free by downloading, so why not take the chance to earn the money back by giving them a shit pre-signed autograph? In fact, the autograph even looked nice!

  26. 26 double 43 comments

I have no idea why the heck people are making such a fuss over the no photography issue. I mean, if this was a concert in Japan, security would confiscate all recording media on sight. I’ve even read of tales regarding how difficult it was to claim the confiscated goods back. Hell, some never even got their cameras back.

We should just be glad that no one had their cameras confiscated…

anyway i think tjhan hates me. i’m not under the Bard blogroll while panther has 2. *go cry in corner*

The post was… amusing. A whole lot to do about nothing, I’d say.

Was with Silencers up on the balcony watching the performance. Not really a fan of hers, but man, her voice can bring tears to one’s eyes. (And that actually happened, btw. Hand to God!) I respect her for giving her all at the performance. I hope she doesn’t just disappear into obscurity and/or singing the OPs of crappy eroge adaptations. She deserves more than that.

But with only 6 songs (or was it 7?), I pity the fools who paid for the VIP and Platinum tickets. And no “Lion”. Meh. The “autograph session” was massive LOL-age.

*rant* Jesus Christ, 118 Singapore dollars?! That’s like close to RM290 Malaysian Ringgit! That’s my monthly allowance right there! If I’m gonna be giving that money for a concert, the artist has to have AT LEAST an album’s worth of songs, dammit. *end rant*

    > I thought it was the perfect riposte to those cheap-skate fans. After all, most of them watched it free by downloading.

Yeah, as opposed to all the UBER FANS in Japan who watched Macross by taping it on their digital TV recorders…

How people can complain about free to air television being “pirated,” I cannot fathom.

  32. 32 manga 24 comments

@ Panther: May’n is the artist that sings Sheryl Nome´s songs from Macross Frontier. She was at AFA08 and had her first live outside of Japan if I´m not misstaken? Someone who knows this may correct me and must do so if any of this is wrong.

@ Post Topic: Wow, I knew the kids here were stupid and acted like idiots, but there are so many people who act this stupid everywhere? My faith in humanity just dropped.

If I could have gone, my main object would have been the live concert, no pictures would be taken as I suck as taking pictures and with my bad ability I can´t do anyone justice. And why take pictures when it´s the time spent there, the music and the performance that is of importance? If that wasn´t the important thing then oh my. Creepy dudes :p

I hope everyone that went there had a good time. I´m jealous of you guys but I can´t afford it. And there are no such things as this here in Sweden :( I just have to pray that May’n wanted to come here and perform. That would be so damn cool. But that is a dream for me.

  33. 33 tj_han 1440 comments

Gordon, strange I thought I added you. Well, readded.

Mr Mayat is far and away better than these n00bs with cameras what.

Otaku complain because they have never attended real concerts before. Maybe they watch movies and try to video it.

  34. 34 Soshi 93 comments

“Otaku complain because they have never attended real concerts before. Maybe they watch movies and try to video it.”

    EXACTLY.

I mean, waving lightsticks in your own bedroom isn’t a concert mkay?

    Oh hurrah, I’m a bard! :D

Now has it become “those who bought the VIP pass are losers cuz it is not worthed it HAHA”?

@Soulshift You want to start the whole shit about legality of downloading again?

  37. 37 kureshii 1 comment

I’m just glad there was no security check at the gate, allowing me to bring my camera and PCM recorder in :) The no-recording rule is perfectly understandable.

I was considering buying the VIP pass… but I decided to save myself $60 and buy the Macross Frontier OSTs instead :D

    @tj_han: You flatter me :embarrassed:

I’m still processing pics from the event. Hopefully the whole series will be up by Friday. Thanks for adding me to your blogroll, even though I can’t sing for squat. :P

The funny thing is, they were the very ones who went all “OMG I’MMA GONNA SEE MAY’N UP CLOSE!!!” *fapfapfapfapfapfap*, and now they’re going “OMG WTF ALL I GOT WAS THIS? FUCKING BLASPHEMY DIE MAY’N DIE!!!”

    ahhh, the hypocrisy….

The truth is that the signature board is a standard practice for concerts in Japan and you can see them being used in all sorts of events and showcases.

I suppose it’s a case of difference in expectations.

    Great article!!
Just did a post about her, where I photoshopped her face on Sheryl Nome’s body. Let me tell you, it’s not a pretty picture!! LOL
Good thing she’s talented and has an amazing voice. Somebody needs to make an appointment with Ayumi Hamasaki’s surgeon…

    @tj_han

Very nice rant! I completely agree. I suppose people in all sorts of fandoms lose their sense of rationale. It’s frightening. Afterall, we all know “fan” really is just shortened for “fanatic” which basically is “over-the-top”, absurd enthusiasm. Though the actual fans you mentioned certainly have crossed the lines of sanity.

    I guess I’ll stick to admiring from afar. ^_^;;

Again, great article and very accurate.
