An episode done in almost purely black-and-white marks a new turn in Shinbou-WTFness, or perhaps it’s Oonuma flexing his own creative muscles even more with his own brand of WTFness. It also underlines the utterly unreal feel of the almost-utopian life that Yuu and Yuuko found themselves sharing with each other after the passing of the tragic Amamiya "Wakame" Akira-sensei. However, as fantastic as the illusion of an happily ever after may be, reality always has curveballs to throw, and sometimes they come in at a really steep curve. After all, the sad fact is that fairytales are rare in the real world, and they do not last long even then. And what is to be done when the bubble finally bursts?

ef ~a tale of melodies~, Episode 10

So one episode he was watching his antagonist, misguided mentor and fellow tragic figure die in a fire, and the next he’s returned to living an easy life, resuming a hobby he has long neglected? I mean, I can totally understand that people have to move on from everything eventually, but this seems a little fast….how much time has passed?

Oho, so that is how Yuu got acquainted with Chihiro in the first place. Most interesting….now we only need to know why he agreed to do his landlord a favour and take the girl to Australia after her accident.

"They’re only cute now. They’ll grow up sooner or later, and they’ll become cheeky and rebellious."

Amen, brother.

Frankly, I can’t really get my head around how the both of them can live together so normally after the so many lies, tragedies, and tribulations that have passed between them. What happened to all that? Did they just go toss themselves into the same fire that consumed Wakame-sensei? Heck, Yuuko even seems normal. Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not sure I like how this transition is done.

And we get our first glimpse of the Miki-chan that Kuze and Nagi have been talking about several episodes back. At this point, even the most obtuse viewer could probably infer her identity by this point, but let’s not speak of it all the same. ^_^

It is said by most people of faith that God moves in mysterious ways, and that the sad and tragic things that happen in this world exist for a reason inscrutable to all but the Lord. And perhaps, that may very well be a logical reason not to deny faith even when it has seemed to fail one. Of course, I’m hardly a person of faith; I prefer to look at the big picture with a rational viewpoint, and that is pretty much what Sociology is all about. It may perhaps come as no surprise that this particular humanities discipline does not mesh very well with those of a religious persuasion.

Oh gosh, Himura, no tact at all. I mean, we know it’s Nagi you’re asking this of, but she’s still a girl…

Of course, Nagi being Nagi, she always has a way to turn the tables and pWn the other party instead. ^_^

And the lyrics that Mizuki was humming the lyrics to just last episode? Yep, it was Yuuko who came up with those lyrics to that true melody. By this point, it is almost all but obvious that Miki-chan will eventually become the cheery, optimistic Mizuki we see in the present day.

And the reason why Mizuki is always cheery and smiling? Yep, Yuuko too.

Moreover, we might have well seen the true reason why the Australian Otowa replica was established; it was probably Yuu who is responsible for it. However, if that’s so, then I have this nagging feeling that even with the building of the Australian replica, there’s still something missing in it that the present-day Himura is still looking for.

The first meeting of Kuze and Miki-chan, so many years ago. I wonder how many people are going ’squick’ at their present relationship in the present day, but at least we know now why Mizuki found the melody familiar, and how she could bring the accompanying lyrics to her mind.

And what do you know, it was Kuze too who is responsible for her current hairstyle. What are the emotional baggage we carry with us decades down the road, even when we’ve forgotten the source for them?

Sometimes, there are people who just don’t have any luck in their lives. And Yuuko is such a one, so down on her luck that just when she was enjoying what seemed to be a turn for the better in her fortunes, she gets struck down by something that not one of us can really say can see coming, either for ourselves or for anyone we might have known. And so passes Amamiya Yuuko, she who has never had any luck in life, but the reaction to her passing from vet and newcomer alike is that ultimately, her passing was cliched, ineffective, and clearly inferior to the way it happened in the game. Which, if I might say so myself, I can’t disagree with. Oh, SHAFT….memories was such a memorable experience, but why couldn’t melodies have been in tune with the true melody of the original story?

I’m not the kind of guy that answer “Good Night” to news anchor, but I shouted out loud “DON’T GO AFTER THE FREAKING BALL! SOME RANDOM CAR IS GOING TO GET YOU! THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS LIKE THIS!”. I knew she wouldn’t hesitate, and that she would die on such lame way…for a ball. That, and the troll episode by the fake CoalGuys made me LAUGH during the Ebullient Future ED. Seriously, they pushed up a NARM when it could be much more.

About Miki, the scene of Yuuko asking her name was on the op/demo (dunno which), so it was not much of a surprise to me (though I haven’t played the game). However, I still think Nagi didn’t mention it on purpose, she’s just lazy (c’mon, Chiro-chan?).

And Mizuki meeting Kuze as child didn’t make me ’squick’, it made me think that the whole thing is more believable. The way their relationship seemed to have a quick start somehow fits better…I just can’t find the right words right now.

The characters’ recovery from their psychological wounds did feel rather abrupt, but I’m assuming that it was because their threat was gone and they had each other to rely on. After all, feeling sorry for themselves and being all angsty in front of the viewers would be almost like paranoia on their part - it’s not like Akira is coming back from the dead, and I’m sure Yu knows that dwelling on his sister’s death will probably result in him burning himself in a room full of paintings somewhere down the line.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
