Having a proposal accepted by one’s prospective significant other is one thing; winning the in-laws over to the prospect of separating them from the daughter they have raised for two decades of their own lives is something else altogether. And although Tomoya has the fortune of already being on better terms with the Furukawas than most prospective suitors could ever dream of, it is still Furukawa Akio we are talking about here, and the latter certainly isn’t going to let Tomoya off all that easy. But whatever difficulties stand in the way of his goals, Tomoya has to do whatever he can to scale them, for it is time for him to tackle yet another developmental task that will characterize his, and many others’, period of young adulthood according to Havighurst (1953)*; getting married, and starting a family of his own. For it is only by accomplishing these developmental tasks, that Tomoya can learn to grow into his new role as a young adult of society, instead of the delinquent student he once was.

CLANNAD ~After Story~, Episode 13.

* Havighurst, R.J. 1953. Human Development and Education. New York: Longman.

I wonder if it’s just me, but somehow I feel as if Akio has been making a lot of expressions uncharacteristic to his usual nature; that is, somehow it seems like a rarely-seen aspect of Akio’s personality rather than being contrary to it altogether. The guy is definitely not all Kamina-class stupidity GAR, that’s for sure, and even said Kamina himself had his contemplative moments.

Most people would focus on the unorthodox method that Akio is using to force Tomoya to prove himself as a man worthy of the former’s daughter; I wonder how many woud, like me, wonder what Akio himself had to go through in order to win the approval of Sanae’s parents. In any case, I wonder if it’s just sad, or entirely understandable, that I personally see Akio as the kind of man I would most like to emulate when I reach the middle age of my life; a man capable of negotiating his own process of maturation while never losing sight of one’s own spontaneity.

Sanae’s little tidbit of wisdom here is especially intriguing, particularly for the possibility that different people would interpret it differently. Personally, I feel she certainly has a point about not getting in between the clashing egos of two men, because that’s just how men are built…. I just wonder what the girls would think about that. ^_^

Although Tomoya’s persistence and determination is indeed astounding, it does raise a question for me; the problem with his swing is because of his lame right shoulder, right? Because of it, Tomoya can’t swing as hard and/or fast as a normal person is capable of, which is why he was always fighting against the odds to hit Akio’s fastball….so why didn’t he make it easier on himself by swinging with his left arm instead, the way Sunohara attempted back in Episode 1 of After Story? There’s probably something I’m missing here….is it that swings don’t work that way, and a batter needs two good arms either way for a proper swing? Is it physiological in the sense that just because he has a lame right shoulder doesn’t mean he is able to swing like a left-handed person? Or is it simply that Tomoya is stubbornly trying to prove something to himself by sticking with such a handicap? Any (base/soft/whatever)ball players, I’ll like you hear from you guys.

How do you know a man is really devoted to a woman? You know when he pursues his ambition even harder because of her. It’s probably a strange thing to our Meltrandi female counterparts, but sometimes men are just wired to attempt to prove themselves worthy of their women through their accomplishments.

An all-too-familiar scene of the young man asking the father for his daughter’s hand, but what Kinny Riddle of the Animesuki Forums describe as Akio’s "GAR and graceful" demeanour carries the scene so well. It might be way too early to think about anything like that, but still, Akio is "the kind of man I would want to be" when/if such a situation comes up later on in my life.

This is the first time Nagisa’s trying the Japanese national alcoholic beverage, huh? Speaking of which, what is the legal drinking age in Japan?

Oh, and the alcohol sure goes to the inexperienced girl’s head pretty fast, too. I know some people can get drunk from the smallest amount of alcohol, but I’m not even sure it’s possible to get drunk this fast. Speaking of which, what is the alcohol content of sake?

Alcohol: Helping people get nookie since prehistoric times.

It’s just so hilarious and sad at the same time that, with Tomoya having enjoyed the company of many beauties during his schooling life, Nagisa subconsciously still views her own mother as the greatest threat to her relationship with her man (not that the man in question did himself any favours on that score, either). Granted, it does reflect very well on Sanae-san’s health, but still. ^_^"

But it’s Sanae-san herself who takes the cake with her "I’m serious!" comment. I had my suspicions back then, but this pretty much confirms that she didn’t consent to acting as Sunohara’s girlfriend purely out of a sense of charity. Even Sanae-san has a certain amount of vanity about her looks after all. ^_^

It seems that while Nagisa usually falls ill on random occasions, it can at least be surmised that she’s especially prone to getting herself bedridden in the winter, when temperatures drop to their lowest. Is this an indication of what exactly she’s suffering from, or are there too many medical conditions out there that exhibit heavier symptoms in cold weather?

Making plans with friends isn’t as simple once everyone becomes part of working society, for schedules are no longer so easily compatible as before. This usually is the case even when it’s simply a case of friends moving onto the next phase of education, and ending up attending different schools….such is life.

Am I the only one who got a disturbing whiff of SEEN666 from this?

Frankly, with everyone in the cast definitely having their own schedules to follow in their new lives, I’m surprised that Tomoya could manage to get even half of them to show up. Moreover, Sunohara aside, how did he convince Kotomi to fly all the way back from America even if it is to attend the faux graduation ceremony of a dear friend? We all know Tomoya has an ungodly CHA stat, but surely even he has to make a difficult saving throw just to achieve such a feat here.

And finally, after five long years stuck in schooling life with seemingly no way out, Nagisa finally graduates and is able to join her man as a member of the greater society outside. Yet, though she has gone through much trial and tribulation at the school, it shall always remains as one of her fondest memories of the time when she was still young….as it is for all of us, isn’t it?

It’s amazing what a simple change in hairstyle can do, but Nagisa is cute no more. Now, she’s beautiful. Dear me.

A marriage is not the end of a courtship, but the beginning of a beautiful and lasting relationship. Though it is an ideal that is not so easily achieved in today’s world, it retains a romance that have many young (and not-so-young) couples still attempting to fulfil that ideal even as jaded commentary continue to broadcast the pitfalls of a social contract that bind two people to one another in an increasingly individualistic society. Hand in hand, both Tomoya and Nagisa are now about to embark on their own journey together, this time treading the path of married life as the Okazakis. How will they fare in the endeavour that has seen its fair share of successes and failures? Is this the long-awaited blossoming of their relationship, or is that still yet to come?

    20

    > but I’m not even sure it’s possible to get drunk this fast.

It is a bit exaggerated, but some people do get drunk within minutes of the alcohol hitting their system. It’s funny because there’s a particular seiyuu that is famous for getting drunk almost this fast and passes out in about 10 minutes after going high just like Nagisa here. (Hint: search for ノミンゴス on nico douga)

    > what is the alcohol content of sake?

Usually around 16-20% depending on the brew, and it’s pretty dry drink as well. It’s not a particularly easy drink for a first-timer so the reaction from Nagisa is very understandable. I really like the stuff though, especially drinking it warm, goes really well with sushi with the warm/cold contrast.

Legal drinking age for sake appears to be 20.

    As to Nagisa’s health problems…

I always thought she has a case of reoccurring mononucleosis. The symptoms match, as accurately as any anime ever depict a disease, and mono can knock people out for month at a time. And as with many nonvaccinated viral disease it can come back…since the virus stay in the body.

Nagisa also appears to not be very fit in general…this can be both the reason why her bout of mono reoccur and a result of the mono in the first place, which sometimes leave its victims with autoimmune anemia.

Of course I also have to part with my customary crack about the Japanese, seafood, and mercury poisoning…although mercury can decrease the effectiveness of the immune system significantly…

Sake originally is 40%, however, its mostly watered down to about 10 to 25% alcohol content.

houkoholic: mmm.. i wouldn’t say all sake are fairly dry. quite a few are, but not enough for me to simply classify it as a dry alcoholic drink.

I’m generally happy drinking sake straight, i also find it drinking at room temperature best for me. Having it warm isn’t too bad, though its got more of a bite, but less flavour, and cold just has more flavour sometimes.
Either way, drink some and be merry ^_^
