Most Brutal Anime Important Character Death?
Popularity: 12% [?] Published by tj_han February 23rd, 2009 in AnimeIn anime, it’s not unusual for a main character to die. Nagisa dies (oops spoiler), Hokage dies, Asuma dies, nobody in Bleach dies, Stella dies, Lockon dies, Anew Returns (to the underworld), Raigyo dies, Jiraiya dies, Capt Alex Rowe dies etc etc. Now, the number of people who have magically revived far outnumber those who stay dead, but that’s not the issue at hand.
Most of the time, main characters die from 2 major ways. The first is some mortal wound/injury/sickness leading to a slow, peaceful death in the arms of other main characters, their final breath being taken only after their long melodramatic last words have been spoken. The 2nd is from a large explosion/energy burst that incinerates/disintegrates said character, and if there is a visible gradual disappearance of the person along with some screams of "Nooooo!" or "How can this be??!!", that character should be dead (or at least will only return in the next season with a samurai mask). These are quite cliche which is why uncommon death causes are so widely remembered, such as Akiyuki’s turning into stone, Spike’s collapsing alone, the wolves from Wolf’s Rain getting chomped to bits. I wish I could remember more, but you guys have to jolt my memory or suggest more, since I don’t keep a list of what I’ve watched and I’m getting dementia lately.
But all these pale in comparison to the ultimate in anime deaths thus far (that I remember at least), the death of Erin’s mother, Soyon, in episode 7 of Kemono no Souja Erin. It’s significant because Soyon and Erin are pretty much the only two main characters, and the show revolved around them. Soyon is a wonderfully nice mother and effective educator, not to mention a skilled doctor, cook and dedicated worker. She’s sentenced to death by some warlord because the giant lizard beasts under her care all died of sickness (could be due to sabotage by evil men). When the giant lizarrd beasts died, she immediately realised that it would mean the end of her, and calmly proceeded to have a final meal with her daughter before being dragged away in ropes. Soyon is thrown into a large pool of wild lizard beasts with what appears to be her jugular artery severed, and the outpouring blood lures the animals in. After some events, she’s torn to pieces and eaten up. That’s really brutal considering the contrast in her quiet dignity, self-sacrifice for her daughter and village and the ferocity of the feasting.
If someone like Louise gets it everyone would cheer on the lizard beasts.
Now that I have spoiled it for you guys who aren’t watching, do go watch the show, it’s pretty good. I can honestly say, this anime death is the most "Wtf, this shit shouldn’t be happening to such a nice person" one I’ve ever seen.

This show does seem a bit rough around the edges (for one thing, the OP-music during the death-scene was gruesomely jarring), but it could well develop into an epic and touching fantasy-series.
Well, one death of main character that I remenber in the moment was in ef-tale of melodies, when Yuuko died, in a hit-and-run, when she was finally getting to be happy. To me it came completely out of nowhere. She didn’t stayed “dead”, but it was strange to see this at first.
The way Gai died in Nadesico was, whilst not so much brutal, was definitely incredibly tragic for a character who seemed at least vaguely important up to that point.
Nadesico, yes. Nothing really needs to be added.
I cried when Teresa’s head was chopped off out of sudden.
Speaking of enjoyable (or impressive, whatever) deaths, Ga-Rei Zero was the one that comes to mind out of the dead-people shows lately.
Whoa, you mean Kemono no Souja Erin isn’t a kid’s show? Fuck, I should pick it up again!
“but you guys have to jolt my memory or suggest more, since I don’t keep a list of what I’ve watched and I’m getting dementia lately.”
Fucking true. You didn’t mention KAMINA!!!
By the way, by Louise, you mean the one from ZnT? If so, fuck yes, she needs to die.
See, I’m really getting old like Zaitcev. I forgot Kamina, Teresa. And no, I meant the Gundam 00 one. The ZnT one can die as well.
Omo: Oh yeah the Kazuki death was awesome, as was some of the side characters’ but Yomi’s was terribly melodramatic and lame.
In my opinion the most brutal important anime character death would be Akemi’s death in Saikano or Setsuko’s death in the Grave of the Fireflies.
1 to the one who says Akemi of Saikano
I’m not going to say which character it was (it’s a major spoiler) but one major character dies in the 12th episode of “Misaki Chronicles” and it was really hard for me to watch. By that point I’d really gotten invested in that character, and I wanted that character to make it.
It was a heroic death, but still a tragic death. Very much a “DAMMIT! OH SHIT! NO NO NO!!!” moment. I think that’s the major-character death that did, and does, affect me most strongly of all the ones I’ve seen.
(By the way, monster-tits and gratuitous pandering notwithstanding, Divergence Eve Misaki Chronicles is an outstanding series which is well worth watching.)
Interesting. Your comment entry code removes plus signs. I wonder why?
Anyway, that should have said “By the way, monster-tits and gratuitous pandering notwithstanding, Divergence Eve plus Misaki Chronicles is an outstanding series which is well worth watching.”
is any1 forgetting makoto of school days? LOL
Makoto wasn’t a good character to be fond of, or missed, in my opnion. Actually, we see it coming that he was going to kick the bucket some way or another. It was a gore scene, but not actually all that impacting.
In the upcoming Valkyria Chronicles… never mind.
nobody remember Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann?????
Simon:” Aniki…?”
Akemi’s death in Saikano killed me hardcore.
Shirley’s death in Code Geass was pretty bad.
Kamina in TTGL
Keisei, Kamina’s spiritual sucessor, in Shikabane Hime thought that one was seen coming since the beginning.
Michael is Macross Frontier
Wolfwood’s death in Trigun
“Hot Ice” Hilda in the early episodes of Outlaw Star was pretty bad she was such a great character.
Setsuko ins Grave of the Fireflies as mentioned above.
Chroniko and Vanilla in Kaiba - Chroniko’s was jarring and just so unjust/Vanilla’s was GAR
Nagisa, Akemi, and Setsuko were the only ones that made me cry though.
Wait, when you mean by Nagisa do you mean from Clannad or Pretty Cure? Btw, I found Bellemere´s death so sad from One Piece. Really made me tear.
Michio from Fafner, so sad when it happens. Also Mu La Flaga in Gundam Seed, not Destiny D:
why is it tht MOST main anime characters die?!?! example lulu from code geass and light from death note
higurashi no naku koro ni when they decide to kill off every single character in the third (or fourth) arc. ALso higurashi, tying one of the seven main characters to a mechanism that takes out your interstines while you remain alive ( for abit) also the main character was the nice cute one (rika) that is alert about the souroundings but would never realy try to kill anyone else ./cry
I wanted to thank you for this essential read!! I am definitely savoring every little bit of it. I have you bookmarked to find out new stuff you post.
A lot of people in bleach die. All the espada, numerous hollows, and even soul society people like Kaien Shiba.
While looking to stop smoking, I found the electronic cigarette. The smokeless cigarettes uses a nicotine compound that is made up of only nicotine. Virtually no toxic substances whatsoever. They have completely made all the difference. Stopping breathing poisons feels magnificent to me!
