We had really funny posts that I look back now, reread, and laugh to myself. I seriously am wondering how the hell I managed to write such funny stuff, because now, I’m NOT FUNNY ANYMORE. As I do some introspection, to come up with reasons to explain my declining humour level points, here are some links to funny posts I did.
Here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
Having read the above posts, I realise my current short-comings and have listed them below.
No Freedom of Speech
I used to have 100% freedom of speech to make the crudest jokes, most honest comments and other manly things. Now, however, I’m too grown up for that, sadly. I can no longer say "I PWN YOU" with a straight face without feeling ashamed and retarded. I can no longer honestly write about why girls suck because I would get killed instantly by my legion of fans. Ok more like, one fan who has the power of a legion. I can still make crude penis jokes though.
No Pictures
I’m lazy to put up pictures. I realise pictures are really useful for dividing up the text and to have tangential insert jokes, with funny captions. I also know that pictures are easy to look at than walls of words. But pictures are troublesome to find and upload. Actually, pictures are easy to find and upload. It’s just that now that I’m a hobbyish photographer (lol), I have learnt the importance of copyright and crediting the original creators. Thus I find putting up random pictures taken from image boards without any knowledge of who the authors were quite unsettling.
As for screen caps, I no longer keep my anime on my computer after viewing, instead, just delete them straightaway. This means I do not have an archive unlike in the past, where I could just search through my terrabytes of anime episodes for suitable caps. Most of the time, the only anime on my hard disk are episodes that aren’t watched. This is how life works when one has just an 80 GB laptop and no other computer. Of course, I could just transfer the episodes over to external hard disks, which I have plenty of, but since the files I download are really of low quality and more like speed subs, I see no point keeping them.
Scientific Writing
Unfortunately, I have tonnes of labwork and their subsequent reports, to write. Each takes about 10-20 man hours and requires you know, proper English which is really boring and dull. It’s been over 1.5 years since I started doing this, so I no longer have the urge to insert weird jokes in the middle of sentences. But this also means I’m no longer funny in my blog writing either. In the post directly before this one, I tried to flesh out an idea of a post which I got on the bus, but it turned out really lame since I can’t write funny shit anymore.
No Time
Common excuse, but yes, it’s a true fact of life that as people get older, they have greater responsibilities and can’t just spend 3-4 hours writing a funny blog post. Not even Dannychoo does that anymore! I’m sure you bloggers would know, but the amount of time required to write a truly good post is staggering, and rushed work is just shitty.
No Community
As Hinano so expertly pointed out, I’m not really in contact with any of the current anime bloggers, ever since I quit IRC and linking to them. IRC was a waste of time seriously, but if you guys have time to burn, check out the animeblogger channel on irchighway, if it’s still there. There’s always tonnes of weirdass otaku hanging around making online jokes. It used to be a cool and witty place just like how the original Singapore animebloggers channel was cool but soon became a cesspool of otaku losers who wank each other and talk about the latest in moe shit and porno games. They think I don’t like them, it’s not true, I may flame them for their retarded behaviour, but they don’t really appear in my consciousness until I need to make a funny or flaming blog post, then I use them as material.
Anyway, there are tonnes of new anime bloggers, which is nice, but some aren’t very good seriously. The older ones have more or less faded away as well, like Darkmirage (he’ll be back, hasta la vista), JPmeyer (a great example of how adult responsibilities make college creativity disappear), DRMChrso (I heard he got arrested for homocide) etc. Some of you guys might not even have heard of these guys!
Half or more of a blog’s content, especially this one, comes from metablogging about the blogosphere. It’s been a pet subject of mine, ever since Jason the bastard kicked me out of Animesuki. But since I no longer have any contact with the current blogosphere, this is a loss of material to work with. And I don’t actually remember blog titles these days, which is a problem. I still use Animenano, despite my promises to switch, old habits die hard. I’ve been wanting to flame Artefact of Sankaku Complex for some time, just for fun, to criticise his use of statistics to sensationalise false news. But haven’t done so, thanks to the point below.
A Change of Mindset
As I mentioned, at the grand old age of 23, it’s becoming quite impossible to continue being juvenile. Just watching anime and reading manga is ok, but getting all hot under the collar when someone insults your favourite series or characters? Can’t feel the anger man. I receive so much hatemail regarding my flaming reviews of Koizora and anime in general, and I really think these kids are retarded/childish. As such, I have attained some sort of buddhahood where I no longer get upset when people insult Gintama or Last Exile. Since I no longer get angry or motivated to retort, yet another significant chunk of would-be content disappears. Normally a lot of my funny/interesting posts come from retorts to flames, or just flames, and these are generally well-written only when I’m truly angry or annoyed. But since I haven’t been annoyed for the longest time at online people, I haven’t had the fire to write such posts. And we all love such posts, don’t we?
I’m at the point where I see retarded people on the Internet and let them go by, instead of the youthful me a couple of years back then when I’ll feel really indignant and need to correct their errors ie their stupidity. I blame digg.com for this partly. Why? Because it’s the place where the most retards who think they are really smart gather. Having seen the sheer number of verbal retards online, my realisation is that online arguments are fucking pointless.
Look at the retards who spout nonsense about food issues, marijuana and government. I mean, wow, some of these retards think removing income tax and implementing a flat sales tax would be better for the poor, apparently since the rich don’t pay income tax lol! My god, seriously. I have attained a nirvana where I no longer care for the opinions of others on the Internet. Including Malaysians.
Humour
It’s the style of humour. I’m finding it really hard to adapt, switching styles of humour. In school, the online brand of humour probably only works in the computer sciences and engineering faculties. Here in the science faculty, their brand of humour is terrible and they don’t understand the stuff that you and I do, which makes it difficult to communicate. At first, I’ve gotten some people offended in real life because they didn’t quite comprehend Maddox-style humour. They don’t realise that when people say "I AM MANLY", it’s a joke. They think you really think you’re manly and you’re arrogant.
I’ve had to tweak my jokes such that they don’t cause offense, which means they are now very dull. Nobody in school thinks I’m funny though. My brand of humour works only with Internet-savvy 15-25 year old males who are into anime, apparently. But since I’ve had to adapt, I quite lost the cutting edge I had a few years back, when I only spoke to Internet-savvy 15-25 year olds and no girls.
Girls
This leads me to my final point - girls. Girls have a terrible sense of humour. This leads to my above point, since most of my classmates are female, and the only one who gets my jokes is the one who my girlfriend hates because she thinks I like talking to her too much, but it’s really because she’s the only one who gets my jokes. Uh oh I have revealed too much and she’ll be angry now, see point above on freedom of speech. I have problems saying things that girls find funny, because perhaps the bulk of my jokes make fun of them. I’m amazed they don’t find "GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN!!" funny, some are even offended. Which is strange, since they should really GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN!!
How does this relate to why I can’t write funny blog posts then? It’s because I used to generate some of my jokes and post materials from conversations with guy friends, but now that I barely have any guy friends in real life that I talk to on a daily basis, I’m constantly having to make girl-friendly jokes or talk girl-friendly stuff which is really boring and doesn’t generate much post material.
That’s enough excuses for today I suppose, I have a psychology term paper to write. You guys can share the reasons why you guys can’t blog proper posts as well. Or maybe you guys don’t realise that you aren’t blogging proper posts, then the first step is to admit that your blogs are currently shit, right, Owen S?

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.

I hope your girlfriend reads this post.
And you’re absolutely right about the last section, and science people having crap humor in general.
“Thus I find putting up random pictures taken from image boards without any knowledge of who the authors were quite unsettling.”
Ever wonder why I post so much shitty artwork on my blog? Yeah…
“soon became a cesspool of otaku losers who wank each other and talk about the latest in moe shit and porno games.”
I’d take offence, but given I rarely spend more than an hour in there a day, you probably aren’t talking about me. Plus I don’t take offence easily.
“Or maybe you guys don’t realise that you aren’t blogging proper posts”
I’ve always been fully aware of the fact that my blogging is awful - I consider it one of my charm points. Plus, I’m just lazy.
You still make good joke when you say the bastard Jason kicked you out of Animesuki. I know right? It is a hidden joke right? You thought that no one will notice it right? 10/10
This follow-up post was several orders of magnitude better than the flamebait/troll one you posted earlier today.
The last paragraph is the best of all!! I wish Owen S can read it too.
Congratulations. You have reached blogging ZEN.
Our domain got blown up by Shugo Chara fangirls remember?

DRM got arrested what
I agree with most of your post…it’s pretty much the same here as well. “Just dont give a crap anymore about anime blog dorama to write anything funny.” My fangirl rage tag only has 2 posts since we restarted the blog in December.
I kinda miss some of my old posts, they were a lot funnie than anything I post now - which is why I don’t post as often, I’m like “damn I have nothing funny to say”
“As I mentioned, at the grand old age of 23, it’s becoming quite impossible to continue being juvenile.”
I am 36…Age is probably an state of the mind.
I didn’t read all of this because it lacked the funniness. Actually, this is my first visit to Anime Nano in months. The golden age is gone. Time to fade away, brother… either that or you just became a FYG. Do these newfags even know what that is?
Os: I can’t, all my living expenses depend on this!!!!! I’m broke thanks to fucking Americans.
Toonleap: Well, 36 is the same as 23.
Hinano: No, I didn’t know that. I don’t see how harmless fangirls can do anything to your domain? But yeah, I might have a similar situation to you two. Need to feed myself.
IWIC: No, wasn’t kidding. It was the truth, he did it!!!!
Digi: My English had problems there, I meant to say only the Singapore version had the losers. Well, Ab had some too but not you. You’re cool.
From what I remember, Hinano ended up generating enough traffic from annoying fangirls that their shitty cheapo hosting provider ended up janking their site, and they decided it wasn’t worth the hassle to sort out finding a new provider and transfer the domain.
Accordingo to their site, it says the fangirls’ rage caused a DDOS attack. I’m postulating the fangirls made their boyfriends, or exchanged sexual favours with nerds, to cause the attack.
Ugh, I’m so late with my comment that I have nothing funny to say anymore. *hrr* But what can I say, I barely even read anime blogs anymore either.
Ok, let me get this straight. You can’t be funny because you feel too old, scientists have no sense of humour, your clunky old laptop doesn’t have a big enough HD and you spend too much time doing adult things like working for a living. There’s nothing I can say to that apart from this: I’m in EXACTLY the same situation!
Actually, I think anime blogging is my escape from scientific writing because I can be as tl;dr, sarcastic and inprecise as I like (and swear occasionally too). Unfortunately being sarcastic doesn’t necessarily equate to being funny, which is my excuse in addition to the above. I’ve never actually tried to be funny in my blog, but that really is because I’m too old, busy and lazy.
I know right? Sometimes you tell them to get back to the kitchen and they actually get offended or something. I just look at their black eye and ask “Say what? You want to be told twice?”
So you wrote a crappy post. It happens. Suck it up and move on you pussy.
Well. If there are factors that prevent you from being funny, train a protege to carry on your legacy!
Usually, I hate your guts for dissing anime and being too bitter in general (I turn 23 in a month, so we’ll see what happens), but I got to nod a lot while reading this. The copyright point still makes you look like a hypocrite though.
Basically tj is shackled by his gf *runs*
wow, sounds like some kind of coming of age blogging crisis. don’t blame the girlfriend, though, coz then she’ll leave you. and girlfriend bad blogging > no girlfriend funny blogging. seriously..
TJ WHIPPED BY GF, NEWS AT 11.
In other news, I’m glad I made you write a new blog post. Just as planned! Seriously though, I’ve just gotten rather burnt out from the whole cycle of watch-anime blog-anime, which is why I haven’t been blogging about anime for the longest time.
Oh, and I guess you just suck at verbal humour? (BUT YOU’RE A SCIENCE STUDENT, THAT IS TO BE EXPECTED) I mean, I can make my entire class (mostly girls) laugh without even trying. Learn2wordplay!
I guess if you truly believed in the last sentence you wouldn’t have made an entirely new blog post just to rectify my comment in the previous one, but you were always one for being tsundere. (:
LOL Owen, there’s only one reason why your female acquaintances laugh at you, it’s because they are laughing AT YOU!! For being a retarded monkey with long hair, possibly. Girls don’t like word play ok, they like MONEY and should get back to the kitchen lol. And monkeys to the zoo.
But in all seriousness, I wrote this 2nd post because I felt a real blogging urge and had good material to work with, yup so you did provide some raw material.
Animekritik: It’s more like one of the factors, not the main one.
Miha: Ok I turn 23 in about 20 days. Woopsie. I’m not bitter, I just hate the recent moe culture shit, but then again, I still watch a few of the moe shows like Asu no Yoichi. My beef about these is that too much of a good thing is bad.
Sojourner: No one is manly enough to succeed me.
Sasa: It’s ok, girls are late. LOL.
James, that is a really funny comment. I laughed.
lol tj… you are whipped……….. not that i’m able to comment about it and anything
and yes the community is changing, if not for the worse, this is a scenario that has been foreseen by godly visionaries a few years ago about the community…
and good to see you write something…. WRITE SOME MORE YOU TJ
Is it just me or is this like tj’s version’s of Impz post months back, albeit less emo?
Seriously though, the posts you linked, especially the first two (since they were published when our blog was already up and running) make me regretful of not getting into the community early on. But where are you now, TJ?! I second jinya, would be great to see you all fired up and inspire to blog again!
Where am I? I just met you the other month lol. I applied to go to either the US or Japan for a month on exchange, if I make it for the latter, expect a blogging explosion of the literal kind.
tl;dr
Seeing as how I’m turning 23 in a month and some days, it’s a little worrisome (though I’m not sure how serious you are) to label the age as old. The only time I feel that is way is whenever I’m at an anime convention, which seems kinda sad to me.
“because I felt a real blogging urge and had good material to work with”
I think that’s the main thing here. I think when you have those, you don’t need to try to hard to get out what you want. Or at least you enjoy what you’re doing when you write up the post. I didn’t really get that from the last post, because I did feel like you were trying too hard to be funny there. Don’t think, just feel is the way to go?
At the grand old age of 26.5, I am as juvenile as ever. Penis. 8========D~~~~\^o^/
Girls:
Quit that bitch in favour of the one that gets your jokes. Who cares about real love?
Exacerbation rocks…
I think it’s because you’re not in the Army any more.
Why don’t they find GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN funny!? zomg. D: Sob. I have lost faith in the female sex.
TheBigN: It’s more like 23 being a time when you should be a full adult already, or at least partake in some adult responsibilities, rather than still fighting it out over flame wars online.
Soshi: If the world’s females were all like you, then I’m sure we’ll no longer have all these crappy magazines catering to “How to Snag the Right Man” or something. Oh, after you’re done with the dishes, serve the fruits.
Steven: TRUE.
JP: That’s cause you’re from NYU. Democratic Consensus Process!
The line of “Oh, after you’re done with the dishes, serve the fruits.” is gold. After reading Soshi’s comment, I wonder should I be appalled that i actually enjoy such wit.
Girls = Roots of Evil confirmed
Real Life has the nasty habit to kill all your juvenile joy. Some can afford to stay immature pricks and some not.Ill turn 25 this year and still laugh at the word Penis Weeeee
Who cares if you write crap?
If everything fails just recycle some of your old flames and exchange names.Noones gonna remember them anyway
god man… take a chilly bin swig of beer…. you gotta loosen up… and those girls you hang out with…. HANG them…. wait… pass a few kegs to them and then you’ll see why alki’s known as the soother of beasts
This is one of those moments where I’m thankful to not be dependent on humor. That said, I could probably do with some of Owen’s wordplay right about now… (and a bit of money couldn’t hurt either)
I AM STILL ALIVE. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.
Actually, I have been abducted by White Wolf and am currently being forced to playtest their latest products. Unfortunately, none of them involve EXALTED (TOTALLY AWESOME) or CHANGELING (I HEARD IT IS TOTALLY AWESOME), so you can say I am being tortured by shitty Pen and Paper RPGs.
Real reason: Too lazy to troll. Way too lazy to troll. And Sankaku Complex is an Internet tabloid. So there. Tabloids exist only because people are curious about the WRONG THINGS.
i can haz iq filter?
