The journey up the long, steep slope ends here. But even as it comes to a close, the hopes, dreams, and happiness that was come across along the way continues to live on, sustaining the town made up of the entirety of all humanity. And when these hopes, dreams and happiness converge in one place, it brings one back to the place where it all began, where the possibility of multiple worlds and different paths lay before one’s feet. As one journey ends, so another begins.

Even these tiny hands shall one day pass us by. And someday, a new season shall begin.

CLANNAD ~After Story~, Episode 22. The True End.

And so it turns out that the Girl of the Illusory World is in fact Ushio herself, stuck in a stagnant world where nothing is born or dies, after her passing from the world where she died happy in the arms of her grieving father. And the Robot she brought into this Illusory World as her companion is Tomoya, who at the end of their ill-fated journey is tasked by her to return to the other world, to seek the happiness embodied by the balls of light spoken of in legend. For these balls of light embody not only the happiness of the people of the town, but also the feelings of the Girl herself, and they can come together to form a mysterious power that can grant a wish.

And Tomoya, having regretted the choices he made in his previous life for so long, finally learns to come to terms with them, accepting the outcomes as he allowed himself to fully embrace the love he held for the woman who had changed his life for the better. For while there may be sadness, there is also happiness, and one should not fear to embrace the latter just because of the former.

With the long, long journey at an end, Tomoya gets a second chance at his own happiness, having helped everyone else found theirs. It is in this next life, in the parallel universe where events have transpired to bring him to exactly the same checkpoint in his life, where he is finally reunited with the love of his life. Where he can finally start a new life afresh, with a whole family full of love.

And as the couple whose love transcends time and space finally embraces the happiness long denied them after that long journey, the town celebrates with the happiness of many for the happiness for the new family. And the town celebrates with a song, one which all of us will know all too well.

And so ends CLANNAD, the third tale of love and tears penned by the talented storytellers of Key, brought into beautifully animated form by the adaptation masters of Kyoto Animation. In what is widely considered to be amongst, if not the best stories ever told by the pen of Maeda Jun, we watched as a cynical delinquent with no interest in an aimless life met a girl too weak to take the first steps up the long, long slope to the rest of her life. We were there when for the first time together, they walked up that long, sakura-laden slope that is but the prelude to the journey in life they were fated to undertake side by side.

We saw the both of them as they, by their own hands, influenced the lives of those around them even as they began to shape their own. We were present as, time and again, one would begin to lose hope in the endeavours undertaken, only to be supported by the other in their time of need. We were in witness as, time and again, they realized how the both of them could not do without the other, and grew ever closer. We watched them grow, from miserable youngsters unsure of their place in life, painfully but beautifully blossoming in the presence of each other, into young adults ready to grasp their dreams hand in hand. Tragedy struck; we wept. Fortune was bestowed; we cheered. In cheer and in mourning, we learned time and again about the importance of Family; for that is what makes us who we are as people, as humans. Flawed, imperfect, but beautifully so. In the joys and pains of the Okazaki-Furukawa clan, we see our own joys and pains. And thus is CLANNAD; a celebration of the human Family.

All the fun things start from this moment….but that is another story, for another time. Ascaloth of RIUVA, signing out.

I somehow expected the ending to be this but. The way it was delivered as an anime is simply beautiful.
I cried at the part where Girl of the Illusionary World said “Sayounara, Papa”.

    Overall comments:

Last week, I thought it was all over Tomoya, there was nothing left for him.
I forgot the deal about the lightballs, which can grant miracles.
And it happened, Tomoya was given a 2nd chance, something he deserves.

I really like the ending, I can’t imagine the series ending in any other way.
I’ve been watching the series since the beginning, and what a ride it was.
From the happy moments to the sad ones, everything was perfect.
Overall, CLANNAD is simply a masterpiece, a series that only comes once in a blue moon.

I identified practically everyone in the “Where are they now” flash-forward, EXCEPT for the two women after the arm-wrestling guys. Who’re they again?

Clannad…has to be by far the best anime I’ve ever watched!
The ending was VERY satisfying! Everything about Clannad is so beautiful T_T
I’m sad that Clannad has come to an end >

They’re music club member or something along that line. The club which shared advisor with drama club back in the day. Also Nagisa’s cowokers for a while.

The light ball making a 360 degrees turn(for spin 1/2)… OK, I mean 180 degrees turn for Tomoya life make me feel a bit strange, but it was overall beatifully done indeed, so I won’t complian.

    And well done Ascaloth.

Forgot to add one thing. If it’s a 100 points score, having this sudden turn for good end will make me subtract the score by 5 points, but it will the series much more rewatchable and enjoyable to remember, which is a very good thing.

I hate Deus Ex Machina endings, but this was interesting. I don’t really know why, because it wasn’t really explained what the hell happened. =\

TOMOYO AFTER FTW. PLZPLZPLZPLZ. Make a Tomoyo After OVA or Special. I’m so looking forward for something like this.

what i would like is to see the story of Akio and Sanae-san.

I loved clannad. I agree with Sniperk. it wasnt really explained well. and the scene of fuuko-chan and koukou-san was a bit weird for me, it came out of the blue. Oh well, looking forward to the next additional episodes.

I enjoyed this season much more than the first, but I did really miss the old characters. This was the first time I’ve seen most of them in around half the season? Considering their prevalence in the OP I really expected more from them..

I kind of like how they’re going to end it with extra episodes…gives it a ‘life goes on’ kind of feel :D

I’ve read through 22 pages of varying degrees of rage on the AnimeSuki Forums, and I’m pretty sure your’s is the first commentary about the last ep of Clannad After Story I’ve come across that didn’t forget that this series is ultimately a romance. And that includes my own. Kudos.

Clannad at first didn’t really give off much of an impression other than an ordinary romance with a bit more sweetness than usual. The second season, however, proved to be a fascinating one. I particularly appreciate the family elements in Clannad more than the romantic drama itself - which has been done over and over again in various titles.

There needs to be more shows that explore family love, and Clannad After Story is, I believe a good example of such. My favourite moment in the show has to be the time when Tomoya comes to terms with his father, especially the bath scene. That one really bit in deep.

iloveitsOmuch!! i was so moved by it!

i regret not having to give it my attention
and that i wasn’t able to watch it earlier until now.
though, i am also glad that i got to watch it during vacation
because my eyes would be a mess if i did it during school days. =)

i was crying like hell at those sad moments. =(
animes that are like this are my weaknesses.
it’s been years since i’ve cried so hard over the anime that i really liked.
i must say it is really beautiful adn heart-warming. ^^

    please, watch it. =)
i also would appreciate it if someone would
    give out commendable animes
that would be interesting to people just like me.^^
