A lot sooner than expected, it’s already time for the beach episode of K-ON! Yes, the premise of this episode may have been to get in some actual serious practice for the upcoming school festival, but we all know the real draw is the chance to see the girls in their summer glory. And it is summer glory indeed, particularly for the member of the light music club whose popularity within the otakusphere have already soared far above the rest (no prizes for guessing who that is). In any case, it is time to look at what could very well be the most lethal episode of this series to date.

K-ON!, Episode 4

"Ozzigy Osbourne"? Oh, LOLWUT.

It’s just incredible how, despite having the oujo-sama label down pat, the rest of the girls constantly underestimate the extent of the riches their designated keyboardist is born in. And that’s when you consider the regular rich selection of confectionaries they feast on, the expensive silverware that these confectionaries are served on, not to mention the Gibson Les Paul that she pulled off her own version of Sale-Fu on….

In any case, I don’t know about you guys, but while Mio is clearly the fan favourite (as well as mine, I admit), I’d dare say Mugi-chan comes in a respectable second. ^_^

Even so, I’m still struggling to explain why, despite being so similar in archetype to Lucky Star’s Miyuki, Tsumugi is still shaping up to be more lovable than her pink-haired counterpart. I wonder if it’s because, despite her oujo-sama trappings, Tsumugi’s actually more real as a character?

The anime original scenes really flesh out the characters a lot more from what they were in the source manga. Particularly here, while originally Mio was just all "let’s have a training camp!" in the manga, here KyoAni actually threw in a scene that adds on to her underlying motivations behind the suggestion. Having read some of the manga, I wasn’t expecting this much character development of the girls to begin with, so I’m wondering just where these scenes came from. Is Kakifly working closely with KyoAni, or is it simply the studio putting experience from past efforts to good use here?

And the chemistry between the characters is one level above what could be found in the manga, too. Although KyoAni has certainly be following the source quite faithfully thus far, as is their wont, I wonder which direction they’re going to take this additional level of inter-character chemistry to….?

"Watashi mo ikuuuuuuu~"

I melted.

Hopes and dreams! Hopes and dreams!

….okay, I’m a bit lost here. What is this outline supposed to refer to?

I wonder if Mugi-chan’s sand sculpture actually corresponds to a real-life building somewhere?

So….is it just me, or is there a Mio-"otou-chan", Mugi-"okaa-chan" dynamic with Ritsu and Yui being the kids going on here? It’s almost like they’re playing house as one big yuri family here…..hmmm. B)

Wasted opportunity there much, KyoAni? It would have been awesome had it looked something more like this.

Yui bitches about her Les Paul being too heavy. I think I just heard the enraged outcries of jealous guitar enthusiasts worldwide burst forth anew. Huh. Let’s move on.

Moe, moe, kyun~!

In other news, I regret to announce the untimely passing of Kurogane, whose cause of death has been listed as "death by moe". Though we may mourn his untimely end, let us take comfort in the fact that he passed on indulging in that which he loves most. May he find eternal happiness with his 72 avatars of moe in the otaku afterlife, to which we all aspire. Amen.

A glimpse of the bright future that lay before the four maidens chasing their dreams together.

Ok guys, we’re going to have to coordinate this together. On 3. 1, 2, 3…..aaaaaawwwww, poor Mio.

So, unless I interpreted this mistakenly, Yui apparently has a Nodame-esque talent for playing on the guitar by ear? Well, damn. I wish I had that kind of talent….I always envied those who could play by ear.

Ok, why is Mio holding the Les Paul like a right-handed person? Isn’t she a left-handed bassist? Or is it simply because you have to play a normal guitar like a right-handed person, since it doesn’t work if it’s not inverted for a left-hander?

Yuri goggles operational!

Well, damned. And I thought Sunohara Mei’s moe power level was destructive….

Though she may be moe as all hell, do not piss off Mio-chan.

With a refreshing training camp behind them, the girls of Sakura High School’s Light Music Club continue their pursuit of their ultimate dream; to stage a concert at the Budoukan. Though Mio initially wasn’t all that interested in the endeavour started by Ritsu, she is turning out to be the most active chaser of their common dream, much like a certain twin-tailed tsundere we knew from one year ago. In any case, they’re going to have to deal with yet another obstacle next week, so stay tuned!

Ascaloth, out.

Let’s admit it, Miyuki unfairly suffered from writer’s wall (writer having the equivalent of a cockblock when writing about something or someone) in Lucky*Star, be it from KyoAni or even the mangaka. We got lots of dojikko Tsukasa, otaku Konata (with refs all over the place in the anime), then tsundere Kagami. Miyuki? Not as much.

I guess that KyoAni learnt from Lucky*Star, if not a bit.

“What is this outline supposed to refer to?”

Duh, Nazca, meaning Yui’s weirdness is akin to an alien.

I just realised thanks to you that indeed Mio is left-handed. You’re right in that because Yui’s guitar is a normal one, there’s no way Mio can play it left-handed obviously.

The fansubs state that Yui learnt the vibrato, but it’s really just bending the note rather than a vibrato, which is actually done by vibrating your finger (see those classical cellists?)

Also, Yui and Ritsu are fucking idiots.

Looks like a paraody of the famous Nazca Lines

“Ok, why is Mio holding the Les Paul like a right-handed person? Isn’t she a left-handed bassist? ”

She’s probably demonstrating to Yui exactly where she should have her hands.

I’m a left-handed bassist, and it’s not very hard to play right handed guitars. You have the mental exercise, just not the muscle memory in the left hand.

“Also, Yui and Ritsu are fucking idiots.”

lolinternatehaet. Go watch basquash or something.

    @TJ Han,

In the manga, Mio called it “choking”, which is what you also hear in the episode itself. That is why you see Ritsu headlocking Yui in the very next scene, too. Wanna shed some light on what “choking” is?

That’s probably Japanisation. Nobody uses that term in the real world.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bend_(guitar)

I suppose the fansub is correct in calling it vibrato, but kinda misleading since most people think vibrato is the handshaking thing. Just calling it bending would be better.

Give Mio a katana ! That will be a deal-sealer for me. Moe and sexy ! Like Yomi from Ga-Rei Zero !

    Mugi-chan FTW.

I wonder when the inevitable maid scene comes…

If you try to play a regular guitar left-handed then the strings would be inverted. Mio’s bass is probably special.

8D I love everyone. Just everyone. I can’t discriminate because everyone is so cute in their respected ways. I need a Mio to pick on in my life. Hmm….

The super star tag team of Ritsu and Yui seals the deal for me.

I’ve already started learning guitar because of K-ON as have many otaku so yeah. . .

    so mio i die!!

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
