Valkyria Chronicles is a Great Show! But…

Only if you play the game at the same time. Previously, I thought it was a mediocre-decent show at best with horrid military tactics. But due to good fortune, my brother bought a PS3 and promptly went off to serve his army term, leaving me with it and a copy of Valkyria Chronicles the game.

So I started playing it and true to reviews, an awesome game with a couple of niggling flaws. The anime was what got me interested in the game first, so I’ve put together a brief comparison of what the differences are so far.

The anime has far more characterisation. Far far more. In the game, Welkin is little more than a robot who shouts "Move out, Platoon 7!" and the other characters are not much better. Most of the squad characters, who you can choose to deploy in battle, actually appear in the show with lines, where you can glimpse an accurate characterisation that fits what the personnel tab in the game shows. FYI, the game is in the format of a book, and there are chapters and tabs, one of which shows the personnel who appear in the game, and a one page description of them. The same seiyuu reprise their roles in the anime, so you hear Fukuyama Lelouch Jun as Maximillian the crafty imperial prince (wow typecast?). You can see the various small characters like Oscar the child sniper (who I use frequently but he sucks compared to lone wolf sniper Marina). The best part about the game is you don’t have to worry about leveling your individual characters, since they level together as a class and you can switch out anyone you don’t like. You can choose a squad of all hottie females too, even 12 year old Aisha the shocktrooper who is practically useless in battle.

The Edelweiss is made into some super mobile Gundam-style tank in the anime, but in the game, it’s just a regular tank with higher HP and defence ratings because of its constant upgrades (by me, costing money!) The game is far more tactical than the anime of course, partly due to this. For example, in the river crossing, the anime shows Edelweiss practically being a submarine, while the game explains that Welkin discovers the shallow points of the river via observing the natural watergrasses, and the tank is not totally submerged. This is why watching the anime and playing the game together is such an awesome combo!

You just forget the anime battles and replace them with the game ones, and then the anime provides the extra story and characterisation the game sometimes skips out on. I’m only up till episode 8 (the latest episode) and chapter 6 of the game, the anime is actually further ahead now but I plan to play catch up tonight. So for those blasting the anime, I can understand why you would not like it, but it is clearly aimed at the people who have played the game or are playing or wish to play.

Not like the Valkyria Chronicles anime because never have played the game? I never played it, and it’s my favorite show of the season, yes I prefer it to Hatsukoi, FMA2, Eden and the rest.

Watching this anime makes me want to buy a PS3 just to play the game.

I think it’s a cute, nice anime. Those expecting a run-of-the-mill action/war anime are likely disappointed by now.

Totally agree - you should watch the anime and play the game at the same time to fully enjoy Valkyria Chronicles. I actually picked some of my troops based on the ones I saw in the anime - Jann being one of them. He’s a kickass Lancer after Largo.

Marina is easily the best sniper in the game.

I actually prefer the Welkin and Alicia in the anime. Welkin is more carefree and naive while Alicia is more tsundere than their game counterpart. For some reason Alicia in the game feels too mushy.

True, Marina is the sniper version of Nagato Yuki. I disagree about Jann, I think there are better Lancers, and less fucking gay ones too. Sadly, most of the pretty girls tend to be rubbish, with the exception of Jane. Now Jane is awesome storm trooper.

I keep hearing about how awesome Jane is and yet they haven’t even mentioned her in the anime. I don’t even know which one she is. At least Marina gets screen time babysitting Hans.

Jane is the shocktrooper who looks like Marina except with more eyebags. Her attributes are sadist, imperial hater etc basically she does huge damage with high accuracy because she loves to inflict pain.

Best scouts: Alicia, aika (double movement)
    Best shocks: Lynn, Vyse, Hannes
    Best sniper: Marina
    Best engineers: Claudia, Nadine
Best lancers: Jann, Elysse, Audrey (all 3 because of their final potential=permanent ulti dmg on tanks)

    imo. lol

I’m only mid-game though so haven’t gotten the final potentials! Good advice though thanks.

Vyse is an excellent shocktrooper. Jann might be gay but he gets the job done :D

I’m almost at the end of the game but haven’t unlocked any of their ultimate potentials yet though…

Totally agree with all of this. VC the anime is best enjoyed alongside VC the game. I bet we’ll get to see pretty much every reserves throughout the series considering we got a chunk of them in Faldio’s squad.

Game side I’m on my 3rd playthrough and I developped quite a liking to the following strike team:
Alicia (Scout): Double-movement, Mysterious Body, Resist Crossfire. Mix that in with Awaken Potential order and you can “Alicia Run” some skirmish at Hard.
Rosie (Shocktrooper): Equipped with the Ruhm (Selvaria’s weapon) she can be quite deadly with double-attack and some precision shooting unlike any other shock guns. Align multiple targets for multikill combos XD
Audrey (Lancer): She always always ALWAYS activates Ultimate Tank Damage. With the best weapon the only tank she doesn’t take out in 1 hit is the Heavy Tank.
Marina (Sniper): Like Audrey she always activates Ultimate Accuracy and with the max range rifle you can headshot pretty much anything on the map.

    Support group
Welkin/Zaka: They give CP and you can’t not have them on the map…
Largo: Woot woot, free CP XD
