The production of The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 continues, as Ultra Director Suzumiya Haruhi continues on her various location shoots with her trusty minions, the SOS Brigade. As is all too often the case with ambitious projects, the shoot serves to bring out the true nature of its participants, and in particular, the flipside of what was once Haruhi’s lovably hilarious egomania. Though it is neither the End of the World nor the End of All Time, the movie production may soon prove to be the biggest test of the SOS Brigade’s group dynamics yet despite its innocuous nature.

First order of business for the day; while they were fleeing, where the hell was Yuki?

Haruhi in that waitress costume? Now that is a mental image worth mulling over….though I don’t get why Kyon was muttering about Haruhi’s apparent empathic powers. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the other unnamed Most Common Super Power that most females have. :p

"Are you saying you don’t think I’ll be able to save you?"

It’s no wonder poor Mikuru probably is thinking just that, Kyon. You did fail her once too many times already, after all.

Though most of what we have seen of Haruhi’s egomania have been of the hilarity ensuing kind, this is probably the closest we have ever seen as to the kind of trouble that the same egomania would have caused in real life. Certainly the girl isn’t the easiest thing to deal with, but throughout the Sighs arc, it almost seems as if she took a new level in Jerkass. Somehow, I wonder what effect this would have on the fans who love her precisely for her egomania.

So, who is that guy in the background?

While we’re at it, where did all these people come from?

And the story for the unusually advanced CG effect of the infamous Mikuru Beam; it’s not CG effect, it was real. Or, at least, real in the sense that it manifested into existence purely on the whims of Haruhi. Which brings up a disturbing implication; ending the world wholesale was one thing, but being able to selectively affect reality even in Her unconscious state brings up whole new possibilities altogether. If Haruhi can make a death ray manifest from Mikuru’s eyes by pure wish, what else can she do?

And this is pretty much the first time we see Itsuki actually frowning instead of doing his plastic smiles, as far as I remember. That’s how disturbing the implications of the Mikuru Beam was.

For the second time in one day, making a suggestion to Haruhi nets a less-than-desirable result. Perhaps this is why the IDSE, the time travellers, and the Organization are mostly adopting a hands-off approach to Haruhi; the alternative could easily be far worse.

Implications aside, the Mikuru Beam is deadly in its own right; there used to be plenty of gag Youtube videos of the Mikuru Beam destroying all and sundry not so long back, and now they don’t seem quite so far off the mark after all. Haruhi’s powers, even unconscious, can be a terrifying thing indeed; I’m surprised as it is that it hasn’t already claimed lives one way or another.

She says now that the mountain in the background makes her scenes feel off. I wonder if she can actually wish it away the next day or something.

I do not envy the SOS Brigade; dealing with her capriciousness is one thing when it simply led to hilarity ensuing, and otherwise mere fun and games, but it’s something else altogether when she steps up her unreasonable attitude to a whole new level. What makes Haruhi the girl she is is her propensity for Crazy Awesome moments, but her increasingly jerkass moments are putting a whole new perspective on that.

Come to think of it….what were the new material of the 2009 broadcast? Putting aside Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, what’s left would be…..Endless Eight, and Sighs, both of which have been putting Haruhi’s character in a decidedly bad light so far. I mean, think about it; what manner of capricious goddess would wilfully put Her subjects through 15,532 iterations of the same 2 summer weeks, or quite literally force said subjects to follow Her plans with no room for debate?

(I could probably throw in a jab at the Abrahamic deity at this point, but….let’s not.)

In any case, I think I see what they’re trying to do here; Endless Eight and Sighs is basically showing the worst side of the character known as Suzumiya Haruhi, and it is doing so in a way that her negative attributes affects the audience almost as much as they do the rest of the SOS Brigade. How many of us have cursed the repetitive iterations of the 8 Endless Eight episodes? How many of us are now feeling somewhat turned-off by her capriciousness? This is the negative side of the once widely-loved Haruhi in the spotlight with all its warts, and why it’s being shown so uncompromisingly….is this the Deconstruction of Suzumiya Haruhi? Or is this the further development of Haruhi as a character in her own right, negative traits along with the positive?

I’ll admit to being intrigued by Itsuki’s statement that the Organization apparently refers to Yuki’s folk as TFEI Terminals. Anyone care to guess what "TFEI" might stand for?

And the Sighs arc clocks its 3rd episode, heading into its 4th. With the secret of the Mikuru Beam finally revealed, what will be the events behind the other oddities of The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 be, and how will they be revealed? With Haruhi’s megalomania at an all-time high, how will the rest deal with it without snapping altogether?

I went “Damn!” when Mikuru didn’t look directly at Koizumi but at the reflector. Otherwise there would have been good material.

This anime become worse and worse………………i hope i can stay till the end watching this shitty show if not for the epicness on the season before……….

Heck, even rewatching Zettai Karen Children is more interesting than this one……..

This episode is brilliant. I enjoy it so much that it took me an hour to finish it in ONE GO, (with so many pause and rewind) xD

Like yourself, I found Itsuki’s frown telling. It was nice to see the cool veneer fade, even if for just a second.

And the Mikuru Beam is quite impressive! It’s nice to have this episode to point out to the doubters over on YouTube, and elsewhere.
As for Haruhi’s capriciousness… there’s no question she’s going a bit too far, but this is to show how her personality quirks have a drawback. Generally speaking, a character is more interesting when there’s real flaws there. As I’ve wrote elsewhere before, I don’t think that Haruhi is meant to be sugar and spice and everything nice - she’s supposed to endearing for the most part, but I think there’s also certain critiques that maybe she’s meant to convey. To some degree, she might even be a bit of a deconstruction of the Genki Girl trope - a little bit too much passion can have a negative effect, so turning the dial down a notch; respecting free will a little bit more perhaps; can have all the difference in the world. It’s not that Haruhi’s plans are bad, it’s that she probably should be a little less forceful in thrusting them on others.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
