Hotlinkers MUST DIE!

I hate hotlinkers. They steal bandwidth and most of the time, don’t even leave links. Worse, I check their sites and they are bullshit kids or lazy NEETs. If you want to hotlink, at least have a decent site! I don’t want to enable hotlink protection because that causes a lot of problems and inconveniences.

So thanks to these people, I will be removing all the mp3s. Plus, future music reviews will only have the mp3s up for a couple of days. Now the poor innocent people who genuinely want the song for themselves will not get it, thanks to the useless black sheep. Besides, who the hell uses BACKGROUND music for sites these days? That’s the silliest thing ever. I was thinking of replacing the music file with a voice recording of me shouting profanities, or the most embarrassing anime song (Pipirupirupirupipirupirupi anyone?) but my conscience got the better of me.

I want written apologies!!!! RAWR!!

tj, one thing you can setup mattering who your hosting is is to disable hotlinking. It should be a straight forward process and while not a perfect solution (people can sometime still access the file by reloading the URL in their browser), should stop the majority of “bullshit kids or lazy NEETs” from stealing from ‘ya ;)

Moy, I do know how and I did it once but turns out it caused a lot of problems. For example, in forums where I use avatars and siggies, I have to put them as exceptions. Some RSS aggregators also do not work properly when hotlinking is enabled. A lot of other factors too contribute to disabling hotliking being too troublesome.

I do get a lot of bandwidth a month so as of now, I’m more concerned with the ethical aspects of it. But when the problem is significant enougn, I’m afraid I’ve to start disabling hotlinking.

Well if you want to really punish the hotlinkers, I have an MP3 of the Kasuga-futago from Kimagure Orange Road which is essentially a pair of (supposedly) thirteen year old girls rapping with their unnatural high-pitched voices, in Japanese with some Engrish thrown in….

Actually, why don’t you record someone cursing as the new MP3 if you find it hotlinked, much like Madonna did for one MP3 which people ’stole’? ;)
Although I’d probably suggest going the Moyism route and just disabling Hotlinking - yes, it’s a pain to put in exceptions, but at the same time it’ll save you other headaches and bandwidth. Where were they hotlinking from, anyways, if the site type at least isn’t verboten to speak of?

the best thing is: Don’t put them up at all. Those who want the songs, contact you, then you upload for maybe 1 day, thats all. Other than that, you could try uploading odoru akachan ningen to those hotlinkers…they might like it though. *shrugs*

Uhm, you can always use imageshack or photobucket for your images, as for the songs, use FileCabin. I hope this helps :)

Shinn: So you saying I should use free services when I have my own webspace? That would be illogical.

If you really don’t like hotlinkers, just do .htaccess. I block all images and mp3s that aren’t coming from my own domain, and it hasn’t affected anime nano or anything. Random Curiosity actually replaces the images with an image saying “don’t hotlink these pics.”

Setting up exceptions in .htaccess aren’t that hard either. Rather than complain about it, just use the solution that’s already there.

You’re uploading all your images and files to the same location right? At least related to your blog? If so, hotlink protect those directories while creating another directory where you put avatars, siggies, etc that you want freely accessable.

I actually do the method I just described. All my blog related image/file directories are protected while I have a temp directory for file dump stuff I need to have outside the domain to be linkable.

I think my webhost doesn’t allow the choosing of separate directories to be hotlink-disabled. It’s all or nothing. Anyway, I’ve decided to go with the all, replacing the pictures with a picture of TRIPEMAN. SO there.

oh man. I feel *so* sorry for the folks that’ll be seeing TRIPEMAN! That’s definitely one way to stop hotlinkers! heheh

    Well, I’m just using Tripeman pics, so… … …

Nah, not too big of a problem.

I’m blocking hotlinkers using .htaccess, and I have one directory called “external” that I kept unblocked, which I use when I want to host a picture I myself link from elsewhere.

But for my main image directories, if someone tries to hotlink they get this instead. It does a pretty good job of convincing them to unlink again as fast as they can. And it’s only 14K.

Think of it this way: every time you punish a hotlinker, you help teach them that hotlinking is wrong, which is to the benefit of everyone who hosts images.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
