Unlike its more famous namesake, Stay Gold by Limelight is merely the third ending song for the strangely never-ending shounen series, Kiba. Speaking of which, there’s no actual Kiba (fang) in Kiba.

Like most other mainstream shounen anime, Kiba borrows the songs of a lot of the more mainstream popular artistes. So far, all three endings have been quite awesome. The first, Very Very, is the least awesome but the other tracks in its single are excellent, such as Days and Nakanaide. The second is by the infallible Snorkel - Solar Wind, an upbeat and energetic pop rock piece.

But Stay Gold pretty much tops the rest. It’s so good that I tried singing it as an entry for Hung’s Karaoke contest. Unfortunately, the song needed two or more vocalists and was a bit too quick during the verses for my unnative Japanese skills. I did send in another entry, which I still laugh at when hearing again.

Limelight sound pretty much like a juvenile and nasal version of Home Made Kazoku actually, but who cares since it’s better to have more of the same good than a different bad. Combining pop, hip hop, R & B and other types of sound, the band was formed in 2003 and got their big break in Osaka in 2005, performing at some live event called "Filter 88".

There’s not much rap in their songs, in fact, they’re suprisingly melodic and harmonise well. The accompanying music isn’t overly electronic, using some acoustic instruments as well to complement the articificial sounds that are ever-presents in such music.

The fully-Kansai born band members comprise of 3 "MCs", a "DJ" and a "track maker". Since I don’t listen or play R & B or hiphop, these terms mean nuts to me. I’m guessing the MCs sing, the DJ does the special effects and mixing, and the track maker.. makes the tracks. Anyone with experience in this area would like to enlighten us?

The irritating thing about the band members’ profile is that the birthdates are written in Showa year. For a moment, I thought these guys were fifty years old. These guys were mostly born in Showa 55-57 (1980-1982). Theres Hyogo and Gutts who are the MCs, Gon the DJ, Yudai a vocalist, and Koji the track maker. Two of them list their favourite ciggy brands as Mild Seven, which is the same as mine. But I like Mild Seven only because Nobue of Ichigo Mashimaro prefers it.

In the single, there are four tracks. Stay Gold and its instrumental version, Message and Kankitsu Kei Jousei Kouryaku Manual. Message is acceptably decent but the last track is really funny. It’s basically an attack manual that describes how to best hook up with the various types of women, including sexy type, healing type, cute type and amazing type. For you NERDS out there, a cute girl actually shouts "GOSHUUJIN SAMA! MOE MOE MINKO" or something. There’s also mention of Zettai Ryouiki, maid and other Akiba terms.
