- Voiced characters I like a lot
- Possess a voice so good you watch an anime just to hear it
Asakawa Yuu
She’s famed for her sultry and mature lady voices. Asakawa Yuu in fact does not do many non-sexy roles. Why is she in this list? Because nobody does sexy ladies as well as her. Just look at Schol Rumble’s Itoko, Fate’s Rider, Ikkitousen’s Chouun! Asakawa does the mysterious sex siren role best, followed by the slutty horny babe role (Vandread’s Jura, Gravion’s Mizuki etc).
Kobayashi Yuu
This good-looking 25-year-old has a rather unique voice, one that is instantly recognisable. It has a certain twang to it which sticks no matter which character she’s voicing. Her most famous role is probably School Rumble’s Lala Gonzalez, an excellent comedy performance. But that alone did not make her likeable, just funny. I think her best performances come as tsundere types - namely Negima’s Setsuna and Tsuyokiss’s Yashi.
Koshimizu Ami
Yet another seiyuu with a unique voice. See how I generally prefer a recognisable quality? Koshimizu Ami is pretty famous now that she’s the voice of Kallen from Code Geass and also has other big tsundere/emo roles in the bag like Nina of Mai Otome, Kamisama Kazoku’s Tenko, Eureka seveN’s Anemone. Koshimizu has a good range, capable of being the silent, stoic type (Ritsuko in Kujibiki Unbalance) to the zany and ditzy Tsukamoto Tenma of School Rumble. Her unique voice also lends well to singing anime OPs and EDs, as we don’t need good singers for these, but rather recognisable unique voices. She’s my age too.
Horie Yui
Everyone loves a good Hocchan role. She’s without doubt the owner of the cutest voice in the galaxy, so it’s not something we can resist. Her parents just gave her good genes. She also voiced Eri from School Rumble and we love Eri. That makes four in a row of School Rumble alumni… pure coincidence.
Hanazawa Kana
Two words - Kaminagi Ryouko. That role, with the extremely addictive tongue-rolling "Kyouuurrrrrrrr-chan", makes her a star in my opinion. Good to see that she also voiced Potaru, the little sister from Dai Mahou Tonge, with the same tongue-rolling l33t skillz. At the age of 18, probably one for the future. I bet she’ll eclipse even Hirano Aya.
Itou Shizuka
Alice L Malvin is the noblest anime character ever. EVER!!
Orikasa Fumiko
Maho? Maho! I like her for Himeko, the Maho girl from Pani Poni Dash. But Orikasa is also hugely talented at voice ranges. From the comedic Miu of Ichigo Mashimaro to the stiffy Rukia of Bleach and even the stoic Sakura (Tokko) and Meia (Vandread). One of the more experienced seiyuu on this list along with Horie Yui, she was even in the ancient You’re Under Arrest as Sena, Nakajima’s stepmum. She even had multiple roles in Suikoden 5!
Sakamoto Maaya
This one is Darkmirage’s idol. She’s generally known for her singing back in the days of the Yoko Kanno partnership. But for me, only her Escaflowne OP was good. Anyway, as Fujioka Haruhi, her deadpan tsukkomi is brilliant. Oh, what’s impressive is her debut at the age of 15 as Hitomi of Escaflowne. I guess young seiyuu aren’t that rare anymore, with the likes of Hirano Aya (14 as Lumiere 0_0).

Chiba Saeko
Chiba doesn’t really have a unique vocal colour like most of the above seiyuu. In fact, I would group her together with the Mizuki Nana school of "Wow I didn’t even know it was her until the end credits!". Thankfully, she does better roles than the above mentioned overrated seiyuu. Natsuki of Maihime and Otome, Chika (lovely) from Ichigo Mashimaro, Priscilla of GunxSword, Dokuro-chan from Bokusatsu Tenshi, Ayane from Airantou… a mish mash of roles if you ask me. But I like Chika-chan…

Sawashiro Miyuki
Her high-class, snooty voice is unrivalled. Rozen Maiden’s Shinku, Galaxy Angel’s Mint prove it. But she can do macho as well, like Cassandra from Black Blood Brothers. It’s impossible to link Mint’s voice to Cassandra’s voice, such is the difference in pitch and tone. But for the cute factor, Sawashiro also did Aruru from Utawarerumono, Shichimi (the white furry weird shit from Negima) and Akane from Pani Poni.

Notable absences include Noto Mamiko, Tamura Yukari, Tanake Rie, Hayashibara Megumi and many more. By notable I mean, others like them but I don’t like them that much.

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.

Why do you guys care about Voice Actress? I mean, i can recognize some voices in anime, i mean: “oh! she has the same voice of xxx from xxx.” so what?
It’s an Otaku thing. I’m surprised that Hirano’s not on the list.
Sawashiro was Clare in RED GARDEN too! Didn’t recognize her at all, although knowing it was her made me figure out one of the mysteries of Negima!? fast…
Pity nobody seems to like Chiwa Saito… :
Kojak, seriously, with all due respect, do you even know what you’re talking about? So what, you ask? It’s like following the same actor through watching different movies and observing and appreciating his/her acting prowess, that’s so! You’ve still got a lot to learn, mate.
Well, the choice of seiyuu can place limitations on a character. Some people just aren’t convincing in voicing certain personalities or moods. Good seiyuu seem to have a wider range.
Seiyuu choice might not drive you to watch a given anime, but a poor choice can certainly put you off of it. I suppose the issue of dubbing is related to that principle, in a way.
Not a bad list, Sawashiro Miyuki is of course one voice to take note off, and I respect Chiba Saeko’s vocal range. I’m also mentally bashing myself for forgetting about Orikasa Fumiko, but she belongs in this list better. Koshimizu Ami has also made quite an impression, but I’m still not a big fan of hers yet.
Meanwhile, Maaya Sakamoto is good as a singer, but her seiyuu skills still don’t impress me yet and she need to be in more roles. Kana Hanazawa is a promising rookie and I’m waiting for her along with Yui Makino to make it big. Meanwhile, the two Yuu’s really haven’t made that much of an impression on me yet, but of course I do recognize their names.
As for Kojak, VOICE ACTORS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF ANIME!!! Please don’t look down on that fact.
You forgot Horie Yui does a most delicious auauau~ :3
Nice list, even without Hirano Aya. Chiba Saeko deserves recognition. Koshimizu Ami is the next big thing (along with Hirano-san). So many great actresses. Add Paku Romi, Makino Yui, Kobayashi Sanae, Kawasumi Ayako, etc., etc. I love Chiwa Saitou, but she doesn’t belong on this list; she’s more of a novelty performer (although I think she’s trying to downplay her unique voice right now: big mistake).
As for Kojak, he shouldn’t be so proud of his ignorance. It’s okay to watch anime without knowing the voices, but you gain a lot from knowing them, just as you do from knowing different actors/actresses in movies.
I made the bid for her on Kurogane’s blog too, but I’ll do it here too…
Kotone Mitsuishi deserves some recognition, considering she and Megumi Hayashibara are pretty much as big as they come (although you don’t like Megumi either, so perhaps that’s no surprise)
But anyways, Kotone’s shown a fairly large range in roles, and she’s done a lot of the biggest roles in the industry - whether you like Sailor Moon or not, you have to give her some credit for being the voice of Usagi Tsukino. But she’s not limited to that character type either, considering she also did Misato Katsuragi, Murrue Ramius, Mireille Bouqet, and Urumi Kanzaki… (and Urumi and Misato are two of my favorite anime girls of all time)
Oh well, I’ve made my pitch - this is all a matter of preference anyway.
toking about preference… i seem to remember tj doesn’t reallie prefer hirano…
Ahhhh Sayaka Ohara (Alicia Florence/Tae Anegasaki) isn’t on the list :[
You and Kurogane are both proovably retarded because neither of you mentioned Rie Tanaka.
Okay you did in the bottom
“the above mentioned overrated seiyuu.”
Hahaha… NO!
I kinda half-expect Kujira in your list though.
Though Hirano Aya’s not in it, much better list than Kurogane’s one. Bravo.
How can you forget Yukino Satsuki! Planetes’ Tanabe, Genshiken’s Saki.
how about doing “Top 10 Female eroge seiyuu” ?
i really like hanazawa kana too really nice voice but too bad like not much roles
and what is with kugimiya rie? T_T how can any1 forget her super tsundere voice
Koshimizu Ami — THANKYOU
Though I am pretty good at recognizing voices (atleast i think i am) I didn’t realize she was the seiyuu for Anemone.
the rozen maiden goth pic is win
Funny how I recognized seven out of the ten in Kurogane’s list, but I only know maybe three at most here.
You probably know what’s going to come from me, but I’ll say it anyway.
FAIL. NO HIRANO = FAIL.
You didn’t mention that Saeko Chiba is quite capable of using a range of voices, like with the ending song of Chrno Crusade. I really liked that song..though it was totally different from her Azmaria voice which she plays in that anime, and if you compare that with natsuki’s voice in mai hime/otome/zwei, you realise it’s totally different.
Another one with a wide range of voices is rie tanaka, who’s voice acting in gundam seed and hayate no gotoku are quite sharply contrasted.
Personally I think you put Kobayashi Yuu on that list because of her tomboyish voice. right?
So far there are two categories by which people have been deciding their favourite seiyuus. The first is where they have a really distinctive voice that is nearly instantly recognisable without even seeing the credits. e.g. rie kugimiya, aya hirano with her misamisa/haruhi voice, itou shizuka with her “elegant” voice, etc. In other words, someone whose vioce is quite distinctive and specialised.
The other category is where the seiyuu has a wide range of vioces she can use, and hence can play a lot of roles. examples are rie tanaka, saeko chiba, megumi hayashibara, kuwashima houko, etc.
The first category leads to fanboying more easily than the second, though personally I feel the second category is more worthy of credit.
No one remembered Ootani? The lady that did Pikachu and Chopper(one piece)?!?!!?!! Ah shes so easy to recognise! That voice is just pure talent! And Mamiko noto aka Yakumo(School rumble)
what about Inoue Kikuko? she has one of the most memorable voices- maybe i’m abit biased since i’m in love with belldandy.
No Makino Yui either ? And her voice’s pretty recognizable to say the least
I remember watching Tsubasa Chronicles only because of her voice, and felt cheated through the first episodes ’cause she was asleep all the time. And her role in NHK ni Youkoso was great too.
Sakamoto Maaya’s OP for rahxephon was good… you watched rahxephon yet, tjhan?
Very happy that Hanazawa Kana is on the list! I’m a huge fan of hers from her role as Shiika in Mushiuta and Potemayo. She has a particularly rare talent in her voice that compliments her characters instead of distract from them and already seems to be brushing shoulders with other legendary Seiyuu if “Sketch ~full color’S~” is of any indication. Although her work history is a little short right now, I have little doubt that she will excel as a seiyuu among her peers in time. ^_^
Noto Mamiko deserves more recognition, or she will “Ippen Shindemiru” you all the way to hell.
