And get an autograph of or take a photo with?

I say this because the Moyism has struck first. I’m not a big fan of Noto Mamiko but I sure as hell would like a picture with her.

I’m not exactly the celebrity crazy type and my pride doesn’t allow me to fanboy in real life (though the internet is OK!) so I don’t have many anecdotes of close celebrity contact. Now, if I got the chance to meet any seiyuu, I would definitely pick…

Hirano Aya.

LOL! I know many of you guys would be going like "OMG WTF BBQ MAINSTREAM SELL OUT! RASENGANBANKAI! HARUTARD!!" but let me first explain why. I don’t have a standout favourite seiyuu, though I like Asakawa Yuu, Hanazawa Kana and Kobayashi Yuu. But the problem is that these seiyuu aren’t that popular and pretty, so seeing them in real life could be a blow to my aural fantasies of them.

I thus picked Aya because she’s humongously popular and quite pretty. Having a picture with her would make me hold a HUGE e-penis. And I love having pictures taken together with hot girls.

So who would you choose to meet? And any other celebrity close up stories you can share?

I haven’t actually had any contact with any international celebs, unfortunately. But I have a friend (ok acquaintance, more like) who’s a good friend of Neil Gaiman. LOL. And Steve Irwin came to the zoo I volunteer at, and did some PR stuff.

Local celebrities are much easier to meet though. The hot Felicia Chin (not the most flattering picture on Wiki though, she’s a local actress) was my sister’s teammate in the National Softball Team. And perhaps the most notable moment was when I was back in junior college and the stage manager for a countdown party where we hired the cast of the then-popular local drama series Holland V (which I don’t watch, since I watch anime) to attend. So I was backstage and had some conversation with some of the artistes, namely the hotter than Hirano Aya Jeanette Aw and the gayer-than-Kira Yamato Xie Shaoguang. The latter cannot speak English but is a genuinely nice guy. Finally, Stephanie Sun’s cousin is my good friend.

Yeah I know, these are kinda rubbish. BUT I DO KNOW VERY WELL ONE INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED WRITER AND CELEBRITY. Guess who?

Darkmirage of course.

Well, Hirano Aya, of course. I’ve been reading her blog and watching every video available for a while now, and she seems an interesting person…as well. I just saw a TV feature from last summer where she said her favorite manga were: Fantsushii Jigoro Peru, Shisakuhin Shinwa, Rose of Versailles, Emily the Strange, and Slam Dunk.

But for some out-of-the-way choices, how about Ochiai Yurika? She has the most fascinating let-it-all-hang-out blog. Or Sasaki Nozomi, who has the world’s most moe voice (even including Noto-Kawaii) and has just jumped from being an OL to being a seiyuu? Or liquid-voiced real person Yahagi Sayuri? Or one of my favorite seiyuu personalities, Kadowaki Mai, who seems pleasantly weird. Or Sanpei Yuuko, who I just find extremely attractive. Or Gotou Yuuko, whose favorite things are drinking and motorcycles?

I’d like to marry Noizi Ito… oh she is no seiyuu. Well then maybe Yui Horie her voice makes me go Hauu~ omochikaeri!

TJ Han sama, I always knew you were the stalker type.

For me, Houko Kuwashima. It is probably going to be disappointing but I must still try to do so!

That said, Mamiko Noto is definitely a very nice person to meet with. Try to catch her along with Ayako Kawasumi for double the LOL.

Already some great choices I wouldn’t mind meeting as well (I’m 200% with Omo on Houko. I’m really starting to love all the work she has been doing recently). I think if I had the chance to meet just one seiyuu, it would have to currently be Mizuki Nana.

Good looks, great voice (singing and seiyuu’ing), and from what I read also a nice personality as well. Can’t be that combination in my humble opinion :)

    Megumi Hayashibara.

Is she considered old school these days? Still definitely my favourite seiyuu, though. :)

Since i already met the top three in my list (Hirano Aya, Minori Chihara, and Yuko Goto), next would have to be Mamiko Noto.

Would love the chance to meet Koshimizu Ami in person. I guess it’s her active personality that stands out. Though, Noto Mamiko would be a plus.

Not related to this topic, but if you like Felicia Chin, there’s an A4-ish picture of her face on the latest issue of Pioneer, for her upcoming army-related series.

Unfortunately, she’s dressed in No. 4.. as a Captain in arty, no less.

I think I have met most of the people in my top list (adding artists as well)…

KOTOKO - AX2005. The news of her going to AX were like a bucket of ice water as I had decided to not go to AX that year due to location (Chicago - pretty much opposite corner of the country) and money (broke). Somehow I managed to get a plane ticket. Her concert and autograph session made my life complete (moyism style), although getting her second autograph cost me the chance to meet Kazue Yamamoto.

Range Murata - AX 2003, 2004, 2005. When it comes to art, he is THE MAN. And he is also THE MAN when it comes to interacting with fans. His gesture in AX2005 (everybody in the panel gets an autograph right here) has no equal.

Hirano/Goto/Chihara - AX2007. I was unable to see them that close since I couldn’t make it to the autograph (if you cut in line - damn you!) session but the microphone on the panel was close enough. However, I found Minori Chihara to be much more attractive, both in voice and appereance.

Noto Mamiko - Otakon 2007. Missed her in her previous appereance in AX as I didnt know of her. For this year, Otakon’s idea of having double panel and autograph session really paid off. By far the most ‘moe’ actress I have met. Anybody who saw their reaction towards the little Marimite cosplayers is a witness. I met moyism during the panel line and were together for a good while.

Still missing: Ikuko Inoue (was in a minor con this year), Megumi Hayashibara, Yukari Tamura, Maaya Sakamoto (technically I did meet her, but the AX2005 experience doesn’t really count), Yui Horie, Koge Donbo (she goes to the AXs I dont go), Carnelian, Ugetsu Hakua (didnt know about him when he went to AX).

Then there is the people I appreciate a lot better since meeting them.

    Kawasumi Ayako - Otakon 2006.

Chiaki Ishikawa - AX 2007. Little exposure besides Gundam SEED. I can’t believe I didn’t know of UNINSTALL before the concert.

Nobuteru Yuuki - already a big fan of his Lodoss and Seiken Densetsu 3 artwork.

And there’s others, but this comment is already too long.

I’m damn sure Neil Gaiman is somewhere on my friendster list.

    Does he use friendster?

Jabel: I blame the lack of expos in Singapore. Nobody comes here. Bloody hell. And we can’t go to the US either because we’ll be subject to vicious invasive cavity searches. Or at least that’s what I heard lol. I guess there’s no really strong burning desire on my part too.

Lynx: I’m not exactly a fan of her, but I think she’s quite cute. And girls in no. 4 do look much better. Pioneer stopped sending me magazines though.

Range Murata would be an awesome person to meet really.

  22. 22 Lynx@Work 32 comments

TJ_Han: Not in this case, she doesn’t look cute in No. 4. Not a good photo, IMO; mostly head and upper upper body, so no full body, and caught her freckles and brought them out. I see if I can get a photo of the photo (!).

  23. 23 VManOfMana 11 comments

tj_han: well, despite living in the US I am a Mexican citizen. Its not TOO bad, but using a foreign passport is likely to subject you to extra searching.

AX has become a double-edged sword. On one hand they pretty much are the only con able to afford bringing artists of the caliber of Maaya Sakamoto (2005), CLAMP (2006) and Hirano/Goto/Chihara (2007) but at the same time they have become very restrictive and controlling. In the past the interaction with the guests was a lot more open. Now, any kind of recording is disallowed, and in autograph sessions (the best chance to see them close) interaction is minimal. This of course changes on the artist.

Maaya Sakamoto: no panel, no autograph session. We did get a pre-signed letter/autographed card in the seats during the presentation. And I say presentation instead of concert because compared to KOTOKO’s concert, it was just stale (were were not allowed to even stand).

CLAMP: the most restricted panel I have ever known of. Questions had to be submitted online before the convention, and were picked before the panel. I don’t know if there was an autograph session (I didn’t go to AX2006), but apparently not.

SOS-dan: the panel was fun, but the autograph session was a horror story. At the end whoever was lucky enough to get an autograph was not allowed to use their own item. Bandai (or whoever) had setup posters to be given to everyone. Although the posters were signed very nicely (I have one thanks to a friend’s help) its just not as special as your own item (just ask the Japanese guy who took the flight overseas and made line since the previous day). For what I was told the seiyuu were eager to listen and grant fans requests, but whoever was in charge of the session were pretty strict about it. I think the most frustrating thing is that all these time-saving measures were not reflected in how many people was able to get an autograph. The autograph session of the line I was on was supposed to last one hour; realistically speaking it last 20 mintues, and no more people was allowed in the saved time.

It is a far cry from Noto Mamiko this year and pretty much every guest experience I had in the past. Certain artists not allowing photos or video to protect their image is completely understandable. Making things move as fast as possible due to the amount of people making line is understandable. But its another thing when you are treated like if you are a criminal who is putting the guest’s safety on risk just by being there. AX2007 had every single thing to be the best American convention this year. But what went wrong went VERY wrong, and it really kills the effect of whatever went fine during the con.

I still had the AX frustrations fresh in my mind when I went to Otakon. For me, this is what made Noto Mamiko’s presentation at Otakon even more special. She had not one but two panels and autograph sessions (same for Seki), we did not have major problems with cameras (first session at least) and she was willing to take pictures with attendees at the end of the second session. In the autograph panels we were asked to have the items ready and not hold the line with useless chatter (and in a way I am grateful of this*), but Noto still took the time to make the autographs carefully. It made me remember the magic of the older AXs or smaller cons, where meeting the artist still is/was about meeting the artist.

    * Kawasumi Ayako was signing up to two items to everyone in line, until the person in front of me burned like five minutes a. finding the item he wanted to have signed b. trying to improvise Japanese when he couldn’t. This prompted the guy taking care of the session change the policy to ‘one item per person, and hurry up!’.

Pretty angry rant, but yeah, that’s how I feel about this year’s AX. Ishikawa’s concert pretty much saved that con for me.

Ok…Hirano Aya for my seiyuu spot. If it’s something else then…darkmirage or Scott Mcloud(I love his books on comics).

I already met Hirano Aya but….I really have to say that if I wanted to meet another seiyuu…i’d rather meet Aya again lmfao.

Even if you have no clue as to what Suzumiya Haruhi is….your still gonna wanna see her in person. I almost got her signature too…but i was too slow

Ayako Kawasumi is tops for me. Followed very closely with Megumi Hayashibara…she was the first seiyuu I bothered to track down the name of way back in the Slayers days.

    Aya Hirano ftw!
I was 3 ft away from her at Anime Expo, but I was in too much shock to do or say anything. Too bad we weren’t allowed to take pictures :[

Well I was at that “minor convention” and got to meet Kikuko Inoue and Satsuki Yukino. No pictures allowed of Kikuko though. Next I’d very much like to meet Shizuka Itou.

  36. 36 Mei 3 comments

Even though I was pretty close to the front of the sos-dan panel (I even got to ask a question), I wouldn’t really consider that meeting them. I’d especially like to meet Minorin, since she seems very sweet and plays the guitar and stuff. I could only dream of a collaboration. (笑) The infamous drinking trio (Ueda Kana, Nabatame Hitomi, and Itou Shizuka) do sound very fun to be around and I wouldn’t mind joining in on their drinking escapades (even if I’m underaged). Kanda Akemi’s tsundere attitude sounds awesome and Shiraishi Ryouko has a very fun personality. Kind of weird that I only care about meeting josei seiyuu, being a female myself…

Aya Hirano would definitely be great to meet.
