Back from Camp, Blogosphere Spam, Camp Anime Stories…
Popularity: 22% [?] Published by tj_han August 4th, 2007 in CultureWhat’s this? I left a provacative post behind on why anime is shitty and spent 4 days in a school camp. Upon returning to my glorious computer and loading up Animenano, I noticed all these copycat posts! It seems that my post was the spark which ignited the pent-up frustration and rage many here have about this hobby. It’s quite amazing how there are so many people who love anime yet hate themselves for liking it. And some of the copycat posts aren’t giving Riuva the credit for actually starting this discussion on anime angst!
On a totally unrelated note, the 200 identical posts on "Anime is not really deep, but it can be if you perceive it as such" unleashed by varous All-Stars. Did everyone run out of fresh ideas or something? I suppose Owen S, who is the driving force behind this combined posting frenzy, chose a broad topic and expected to utilise the collective intelligence of many bloggers to cover as many aspects and viewpoints as possible. And at the same time, drive visits from the more popular sites to the less popular ones. Like his. LOL! Anyway, jokes aside, I’m not so sure it was a good idea after all.
Imagine eating 10 different steaks cooked in a different flavour or recipe. Individually, they are still all good steaks but combined, you’ll be too full to devour them all and would thus either just nibble a little out of each, or just eat one and leave the rest.
Perhaps in future, if he still wants to perform such coordinated postings, Owen S should first organise the participating bloggers into specific roles and viewpoints beforehand. For example, if the topic is "The Diary of an Otaku", each blogger could perhaps post on his own unique otaku locus, like cosplay, Narutardation or elitism. Owen S’s entry could read like this "TODAY I LAUGHED AT 3 NOOBS. THEY DID NOT THINK THAT HARUHI IS THE BEST SHOW EVAR. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT APPRECIATE DEEP ANIME." And maybe DRMCHRSO would add to that by posting his daily experiences as a weird social outcast with delusions of having connections in high society, "TODAY I MET WITH MY BEST FRIENDS WHO WORK AS PRIME MINISTERS AND THEY CONTROL THE ANIME WORLD." Such diversity would make the topic interesting and not saturate it with the same old points. So instead of everyone trying to be a steak, the more popular bloggers can be the starters, others who love writing long essays can be the main course and the more humourous ones provide the finishing dessert.
Here’s an example of a post on "Diary of an Otaku". Remember I went for a camp? No matter how non-related it is to anime, you can still write an anime post on it. So here goes.
In school, I was a normal freshman totally without any trace of otakuism. We did the usual camp stuff like group games, cheering, running around like headless chickens as part of a "game through which we can learn about the school" and many others. Unlike the previous one I went for, this one had an academic slant to it - we also learnt the university’s module bidding system and how to effectively plan for the upcoming school semester. I thought it was quite the boring camp, regrettably. To put it in perspective, in my previous camp, I was one of the more reserved and quiet ones in the group. But in this one, my groupmates saw me as the most outgoing and leaderish member! You can imagine just how silent Yuki my group mates were.
In the previous post, someone asked if I was in Pharmacy. Obviously not! On this site’s About page I did state I’m a Food Science and Technology major. Anyway, I really wanted to attend this arts module, Post-war Japanese Films and Anime, recommended by one commenter, apparently a postgraduate student in NUS. Too bad the schedule clashes with my core modules so I can’t. Annoyingly. I couldn’t get the module on Popular Culture of Contemporary Japan as well.
By chance, I also saw a little exhibition of anime-style drawings by the NUS anime club. I probably won’t join the anime club, because anime is an embarrassing hobby of course. It’s also a pretty solo activity, with the social components bountifully provided by the Internet already. I don’t really see the point of joining a real-life official club.
Remember how I wrote about my previous camp having 6 different types of anime fans? Strangely, every single guy in my new orientation group except one was an anime fan as well. But interestingly, it was not Naruto/Bleach that was the most mentioned or even mentioned. It was Claymore. Claymore’s popularity here in Singapore has reached dizzying heights really. Oh and some of them, including the seniors, actually read this site! Am I celebrity or what? I’ll gladly do autographs.
Most camps have this activity called "Secret Pal". It’s basically a randomly-paired up blind date, where both parties are blind-folded and made to initiate mating rituals. It’s an activity recommended by the population-raise-seeking arm of the Singapore Government, apparently. My secret pal was a girl who watches Inuyasha. Her good friend, who was my friend’s blind date and seated rather near me as well, was talking to that friend about her love of Kekkaishi and Inuyasha. Some other girl told me she loved Ouran. Anime is so pervasive these days, it’s like everyone watches it. Anime will never be like sports though. Sports is enjoyed by many and those who excel in it are admired. Anime may be liked by many these days but nobody will admire a guy who excels in watching anime or talking about it. Unless you admire me, of course. Then you have to provide evidence of you admiring me. Send it to my email.
To cap off this totally random and incoherent entry, a direct result of my sleeping only a handful of hours for the past few days, I shall provide you with an inspirational quote:
"DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! BELIEVE IN THE ME WHO BELIEVES IN THE YOU!" - Kamina of Gurren Lagann. I’m going to try doing it to real life people who attempt to talk to me about their emotional problems. I’ll post the results here!

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.

What I find most interesting about this post is that I was inclined to read it only because you posted a link in the #AB channel. Also interesting is the fact that i’m commenting only because I feel it finishes and completes my viewing of this post. In other news anime seems to be turning into some sort of socially acceptable activity in societies other then Japan.
“both parties are blind-folded and made to initiate mating rituals”
Blind dates in your place are awesome.
seems like you can link anime to everything.
That sports analogy is off though. Many try sports, many drop sports, many watch sports. Many try drawing anime, many drop drawing anime, many watch anime. Only a handful of dedicated people will be able to break into the anime industry or stand on the award podiums receiving their Olympic medals. Personally, I want to break into the industry someday, somehow, and the numerous anime shows I’m watching right now will later on prove to be valuable EXP points. You could call it ‘training’, something that professional athletes do every day to stay on top of their game.
“Sports is enjoyed by many and those who excel in it are admired. Anime may be liked by many these days but nobody will admire a guy who excels in watching anime or talking about it.”
Actually, those who excel in anime (read: making anime) are admired.
“watching anime” is much more comparable to “watching sports”
Anya: If your training to become an animator consists of watching anime, then I fear for your future. But you obviously don’t get the analogy anyway. Nobody’s talking about the top level anime people here.
Anya: Athletes don’t train for sports by watching sports videos of people playing sports, they train by actually playing the sport. So yeah, I’m finding it a bit hard to see how you’re going to “break into the industry” by just watching anime.
While you were gone, the letter saga hit the third wave.
Heavy casualities reported
Pls post your interview.
Time….. is not our our side.
I thought it was hilarious how everyone synchronized their posts and was like, “HAY ALL U OTHR GAIZ URE NOT IN THE CLUB
(lol for cut-off comments)
I admire you.
humm.
“And at the same time, drive visits from the more popular sites to the less popular ones. Like his. LOL!“
Best line of the article, and this is one of your best articles in a while. I actually finished reading it!
Keep up the good work, tj, and I shall leave you with this wonderful saying…
“BELIEVE IN THE OTAKU IN ME THAT BELIEVES IN THE OTAKU IN YOU!”
> this is one of your best articles in a while. I actually finished reading it!
LOL
I disagree way too much with this posting to comment further on it now.
No, I’m not aiming to be an animator. More like a journalist. Eh, we’ll see.
I join my school’s Anime Club just for the service hours
Claymore!? HAHa… well I don’t like it. But it isn’t trash unlike the other 2 titles.
About the anime club, I’m thinking about reforming the anime club in NUS when I enter. N it wouldn’t be called an “anime club”. Details here:
http://seinenramen.animeblogger.net/?p=67
However I’m a realist, so I prefer studying harder to get a better grade to earn more and buy more manga/DVDs in the future. So erhz… depends. But if anyone wanna use my ideas as a blueprint for whatever school u are in then go ahead. I don’t care about credit, juz do it.
And I may skip these orientation camps altogether… imo a huge waste of time. I heard it is possible.
@DKiWi Yes you can. I skipped all the orientations and enter university as well prepared as tjhan is.
@tjhan It works. Just don’t parrot it, and try to paraphrase it instead.
Ho, TJ Han, you’re entering NUS this semester as well?!
Oh, and here’s why you can’t take Popular Culture of Contemporary Japan yet; it’s a LVL-2000 module, you gotta take JS1101E Introduction to Japanese Studies first. Which, BTW, I managed to get since I’m FASS, and it’s part of my core modules. :p
Good luck in bidding for JS1101E, man, and I hope to have your acquaintance in JS1101E!
Lol, Dkiwi: “And I may skip these orientation camps altogether… imo a huge waste of time. I heard it is possible.” Well, ALL the camps are over and lessons are starting…
Well the whole point of the camps is to make friends and have fun. Sure, you could learn all the bidding/admin stuff by just reading through the various tutorials and guides online of course.
But Mitsuki, are you sure you’re as well-prepared as me? Lol. You’re talking to a guy who already completed 3 modules in your faculty. Do you know the school grounds? Do you have anybody you know there? Do you know seniors who can lend you notes and exam papers, and inform you of what the various modules are like? Do you know people you can go to classes with and do projects together lest you meet some useless guy who ruins your grade? Do you know how to use the resources in the libraries? Do you know the culture of your arts faculty?
I fail to understand why people like Dkiwi and Mitsuki would not want to attend any of the camps, when thousands of others were dying to go. I can only pinpoint one common factor between the two - ANIME!!
So 5 days is a waste of time, much better spent on watching the latest anime episodes and slacking around.
Oh and regarding your idea on the anime club I don’t think they will let you have such an ambiguous club name. But yeah you can try. I do think it’s a bit disrespectful for you, a freshie, to go in all high and mighty, proclaiming to want to change the club even before you know what they are and what they do.
Wait Ascaloth! JS2208 the Pop Culture one does not have any pre-requisite module, at least not written anyway. This means that we can take it, doesn’t it?
JS1101 clashes with my cores.
That’s funny…..I can’t find a JS2208 module in the NUS database….I’ll get back to you on this.
Oi, oi…..it’s JS2213, not 2208.
And yeah, no pre-req….but if I guessed correctly, you tried to bid for it last friday during Round 1C, when the module was probably protected for the FASS students.
Guess you’ll have to try again tomorrow during Round 2A.
@tj_han: I won’t go in high and mighty… that’s nuts. It just wouldn’t work lol. I’ll juz propose and see wad happens. Freshie is something like being a chao recruit/fucking private rite? lolzzzz
I’m just gonna sit this one out…too much to do right now at school….
Marmot you can join the club next time if you want, but no coming into the treehouse. Girls have cooties.
Ascaloth: Take JS2213 with me please. I shall do it!! I actually thought my schedule clashed with it, not that I couldn’t bid it. I know about phase 2A.
@tjhan Dude, the only reason why you know campus better than me is because you registered for special term, while I didn’t. Apart from that, unless you’re talking about specific camps pertaining to your major, like political science, I don’t really see the need to get to know people first, unless of course, you do not have confidence in your ability to make friends through lectures/tutorials.
I don’t deny the possibility of cliques being formed and stuff, but when you’re talking about general camps like FASS, Union and Sports camps, I don’t really see the advantages of it. Speaking of seniors, camp is not the only route to getting such contacts.
My view of Orientation camps is that they are only necessary for people who have never experienced a proper orientation programme in secondary school and Junior College, and therefore need such a platform/opportunity to make friends.
I’m not saying that all who attend camps are like this; alot of them really like the rah-rah atmosphere in such camps, but I’m not one of those, unfortunately. And it has nothing to do with anime actually.
Let’s just put this down to a difference in perception with regard to the pros/cons of attending orientation camp.
I wished I could have taken JS2213 though.
@DKiWi It’s not just about the attitude; what tjhan means is; you need to immerse yourself in the club first, understand how the club runs etc. before making such claims. Which obviously you didn’t.
Sorry TJ, I can’t. I’ve already got my 5 modules for the semester, and I ABSOLUTELY have to do JS1101E first; gotta clear my exposures by this semester, ’cause I’m not getting protection for them next semester.
How about some other JS module next semester, like JS2216 for example? And besides, I’ll probably still see you at the anime club!

And DKiWi, your plans to “reform” the anime club and rename it JUMA have about as much merit as a certain girl’s plan to create her own club to find mysterious events like aliens, time travellers, sliders, and espers. Maybe you should consider a hostile takeover of the NUS Literary Society, and grind the NUS Electrical and Computer Engineering Club under your boot while you’re at it.
@Ascaloth: HAHAHA… u are insulting Haruhi.
Anyway with all these talks about modules I hope not too many weaboos are in my batch coz I’m definitely pouring quite alot of points into bidding for Jap language.
@Ascaloth What modules are you taking?
JS1101E Intro to Jap Studies, LAJ 1201 Japanese 1, TS1101E Theatre Studies, PS1101E Political Science, and SC1101E Making Sense of Society. You?
Anime is the Shiznit
