My friend reading a certain local loser tabloid today when the first two pages of it caught my eye. Here is it, scanned in full high-res glory!!

The article basically covers concisely, what was talked about during my interview with Peter, the CEO of Odex. Of course, I have a lot more info but because I’ve been barely home this past week, I’ve been unable to write up the full article.

For those of you dying to hear what’s going on, this article is generally quite informative. But the slant is obviously in favour of Odex, though the facts are quite clear-cut.

Read it in full and discuss please. This is Odex’s side of the story, which is finally out after all these months. Peter has a really weird idea of Public Relations, he apparently believes it is better to say nothing than to give false expectations, he prefers the anime fans to squirm around churning out conspiracy theories about his company. I can’t say I agree with him, it sounds ridiculous and is probably part of the reason why his company has such a bad reputation. The spiral of hearsay is a dangerous one.

I will try to do a full article as soon as possible. Meanwhile, this coming semester I am taking "Popular Culture in Contemporary Japan", JS2213, a Japanese Studies Module. Anyone in my class? I may just post about my experiences in this module haha.

    AVPAS? Not mentioned?

Enough said about reporter’s effort into researching information regarding this issue doesn’t it…

“And our VCD’s and DVD’s are already priced as low as they go, but people aren’t buying.”

I think you should invest more on your packaging, Mr. ODEX. As much as I’m happy about R3 anime DVD’s but if they look no different from the cheap HK bootlegs, no point buying them even if it’s free.

Look at Japan, they can package 2 episodes in to a single DVD along with a few extras here and there and charge a premium for them, yet I don’t see them complaining about their sales.

    Think about it.

    Its very sad indeed.

  4. 4 Kouji 49 comments

I recalled one mentioning something like…
“One episode downloaded does not equate to one less DVD sold”
Or something like that. How can they blatantly blame it on piracy when they don’t look at how their distribution model works? Even the music industries know of such a flaw and are improving that model rather than finger pointing it to illegal downloading.

  5. 5 Ascaloth 202 comments

Apart from packaging, they really should invest in a new PR team. Not to mention use more of their budget on airtime in Central for anime, as well as ads for these anime.

And the subs. I’m just throwing this out as a wild idea there, but maybe they should consider a new tactic never thought of by anyone else; strike a deal with fansub companies (like [a.f.k.] and Live-Evil, just to name a few…) to BUY the rights to their subtitled works whenever they plan to release a show they’ve licensed…..would be a much better option than trying to do the subbing themselves and making a mess of it.

…actually, I think I may have just hit on the perfect idea for my editorial. I’ll be getting that draft to you soon, TJ.

its not as though sales will rise if less people downloaded
real anime fans appreciate the originality of “made-in-japan”

This leads to the next question: How the US company they hired get the information. Proper channels? so, is it possible that they got the torrent and got our IPs and send to the secret company?
And external parties: Isn’t a law firm an external party?
NO CLAIMS MADE YET: Erm, really? then what are the money that they are paying? reimbursement fees to ODEX? LMAO… that 2k to 3k is only to recover the injury odex got? This can’t be true!
WE ARE NOT TARGETING ANY ISP IN PARTICULAR: Wow, so the first 17 are “randomly picked” Singtel customers. Another lol..
DO ODEX’s VCDs cost $10? No..it’s $29.90. Pls, certain local loser tabloid, do your research. And their DVDs too.

Yap, it is very sad. Till this stage, odex still do not know what we want, and they are still doing what they think is correct. The facts are all online. Read it, give us what we want and we give you wat u want. People import from Japan because of its contents and quality. you fail at both and you can talk..lol…And censorship too. We want original content. No editting. At most, let it all be M18. And I like the title of the article: Court “FORCES” ISPs to reveal culprits. Good choice of words. I would rather Odex just import in the R2 DVDs from Japan itself and be happy with it. Don’t even care about playing on TVs. torrent’s your best friend. Make your enemy your friend, and you gain.

    This is my 1st time posting here and I’ve been reading about this whole Odex drama. Seriously, from what Odex is adopting now, he’s losing more customer than actually gain them. Does stopping anime downloaders really will increase their sales? I really doubt so. . . -_-;

Funny this all happens at the same time Bandai marvels at how well fansubs help selling Haruhi DVDs.

Erm, ok, ‘funny’ may not be the right word here.

  10. 10 DiGiKerot 57 comments

Hmmm, I find them quoting US release numbers as proof of the effects of fansubs kind of amusing. If it was raw sales figures across that period, than that may well have at least shown something, but in terms of actual releases there was way, way more going on in the US market in the last couple of years to cause to reduction in titles released.

  11. 11 exalt dragon 162 comments

@kurogane: I disagree with you. I have the odex burst angel DVDs, and the packaging sure doesn’t look like a bootleg. Maybe it could be better, but certainly the CGs used on it were quite nice and certainly not “cheap”. But nevertheless, I still don’t like odex’s handling DVDs. Firstly, their releases are too slow. Secondly, they don’t release a lot of the series they put on their AVPAS website. Thirdly, I don’t like their handling of this matter. FYI I am still downloading my anime. It’s exactly like like ASOS-dan said: fans who watch fansubs and buy DVDs= good; fans who just watch fansubs and never buy the DVDs=bad.

To elaborate more on “slow”….lets see. The anime that started one season ago…those around episode 19 airing in Japan as we speak, already have their first DVDs released in Japan. Nanoha StrikerS is one example. Episode 20 is not even shown yet and the DVDs are already going around. Yet there’s on sign of it coming around odex’s side, and there are already fansubbed DVDs, so fans get thrown off by the wait. Odex really doesn’t understand fans.

  12. 12 Orochi 27 comments

In defence of Odex, I believe an individual has the rights to protect his investment and takes action whenever he sees fit. And I’ve always know that there are restriction put in place by the Japanese Studios in regards to the scheduel of releases. Usually its JP->US->TW/HK->SG in accordance to the market.

And I believe everyone here knows the mentality of the Singaporeans. Cheap is good. Free is best. I can even wager my entire collection that 85% of the Sinaporeans, aftering a series on free-to-air channel, will not bother to get the DVD for what they deemed as “childish cartoons”. Spruging on dramas and movies instead. For a Japophile like me, I prefer to get R2-JP DVD releases, or none at all. Money is just a very useful tool to me.

And now for Odex bashing. Instead of blaiming data download for you falling sales, why not examine your releases first. I know that the shoddly packaging is because of cost cutting, but what about the contents ? The dual-audio option is redundant since I believe that everyone in Singapore is educated enough to read English. They can improve on the video encoding quality just by doing away with the English/Mandarin audio.Of course, there’s the subs….

Now about their release scheduels. As I’ve put it earlier, I understand the restriction set in place. However, don’t you think it’s taking a little too long for some titles to be out ? People want One Piece Vol 9 and beyond since like…Genesis. And I believe those who bother had their interest waned. What about DVD releases of Gundam Seed Destiny Vol 3 and 4 ? The VCDs are done and why not the DVD. Where are the DVD releases of Chrno Crusade Vol 2 or even Monster which they promised ?

  13. 13 §oL 26 comments

    1.Late releases
    2.Poor subs
    3.Poor Vcd quality
4.No advertising whatsoever(unless you include the media uproar)
    5.Censorship

    That about sums Odex’s downbringing.

  14. 14 Chraen 17 comments

They are very restricted by the Japanese companies on the speed and packaging of their releases, so we can’t really blame them that much on those two. They really need to find out what people want to buy though, and release those. Things like Haruhi, Code Geass, ZnT, Lucky Star, Claymore etc. will get more sales than the crap that is sitting on their shelves.

  15. 15 §oL 26 comments

Claymore prolly won’t make it through censorship. Even if it does, i suppose each episode will last a grand total of 10mins. Besides licenses for godly anime are expensive, although they’ve maked tons out of downloaders.

  16. 16 Kurogane 121 comments

@exalt-dragon: I’ve seen some of the ODEX DVD’s and believe me when I say that in Malaysia, the packaging for some of the bootlegs are MUCH, MUCH better than theirs. Sometimes, I’ve even been tempted to buy them just because of the awesome covers on some of them.

Also, spending some money on PR wouldn’t hurt either. I’ve never even heard of ODEX, despite being in a neighboring country and in to the hobby for more than 7 years, until this fiasco erupted.

  17. 17 Hitoribocchi 6 comments

I’m not the one to talk a lot of things when it comes to this, but now having become the “afflicted” of their current legal proceedings, I do have a lot of angry vitriol against them.

I can understand the situation that they’re in (being forced to release last before the United States and Taiwan/Hong Kong’s). I could be the only few people in Singapore that supports the idea of Henry Jenkins’ piracy promotion. Unfortunately, being a Singaporean, I have to be grouped alongside other cheapskate (read: freeloading) fellow citizens that Odex has sorely criticized against. This brings to the issue of their situation.

I don’t really have a foolproof solution to give. But since they act in the ‘cloak-and-dagger’ modus operandi, I think it’s high time they expose themselves to who they are, and be transparent (as in, public announcement) of what are their plans and all. All of their actions until now (with the exception of the AVPAS’ inception and their high-profile crackdown, on newspapers recently) has only made others unaware of what are the dos and do nots.

Argh, skip that. I don’t think the Gov’t will allow piracy in any form. Oh, well, it’s what all Singaporeans have voted for: the PAY and PAY party.

  18. 18 Mitsuki_Hayase 336 comments

I don’t see how the Government comes into the picture. To date, it seems like a unilateral piece of action from Odex.

This is unlike the previous cases of clamping down on piracy, because of the US-Singapore FTA.

Kurogane: “I’ve seen some of the ODEX DVD’s and believe me when I say that in Malaysia, the packaging for some of the bootlegs are MUCH, MUCH better than theirs. Sometimes, I’ve even been tempted to buy them just because of the awesome covers on some of them.”

Agreed. Not to mention the price. Entire series of Samurai 7 on DVD for 30rm, for example.

  20. 20 tj_han 1440 comments

I can’t believe you guys are comparing the prices of bootlegs with originals. Bootleggers don’t have to cover costs like dubbing, licences, and others. They also just burn the cds.

Hitori: Sorry to hear that you’ve been slapped with the letter. But Henry Jenkin’s Haruhi example works only in a few cases and the general trend is that fansubs do eat into DVD sales. I don’t see the link to PAP here though. Even if the opposition suddenly launched a coup d’tat, do you think Odex will suddenly say, “OK don’t buy my stuff, go download all you want?” or will the new government ignore piracy and let this country, a centre for commerce, degenerate into Malaysia and China-style commercial anarchy?

Sol: Comparing VCDs to fansubs is quite spurious. Anyway, most mainstream Singaporeans do prefer VCDs and dubs. No matter how loud us, the minority shouts, the majority still speak with their wallets. This is fundamental econs. Odex sells VCDs with dubs because that’s what the market demands.Similarly, Starhub and Mediacorp always request for Chinese-dubbed anime.

tiny red man: 3-4k is meant for costs incurred in sending the letter. The US company does the tracking. Is it so hard to understand? You haven’t used a law firm before, have you? They charge hundreds by the hour, as well as numerous other fees. You are obviously rather poorly-informed. Censorship is rather strict because of government policies and explains why our mass media are all so tame. This point is moot. As for people importing, there’s only a handful of those hardcore fans.

thanks for correcting my point of view. maybe it was my childish thinking..

  22. 22 abao 46 comments

Well what else can we say about this other than we are screwed? Although I would say that if there wasn’t torrents, I wouldnt get into niche anime. That also means I wouldnt buy any related merchandise in the first place.

As for the news article, it doesnt get its facts 100% straight and sensationalise the news instead, even though i remember Poh Kim video saying they are selling the second box of ODEX VCD at half price. This means $29.90 + $14.95.

  23. 23 whazzup 2 comments

well for what it’s worth, Taka is having a toys sale at its atrium (nt sure wat it’s called, basically tat area in the basement with the big ass lcd tv). Got a section w/ anime stuffs.

Odex boxsets also selling, at $10 for a vcd box series, and $20 for a dvd box. I saw lots of FMA boxsets there (each box have 13-14 episodes). Well den, let’s see how many ppl actually buy them….

    LOL

  25. 25 Pino 2 comments

Taking about bootlegs dvds, sometimes you won’t even know its a bootleg dvd.

After reading all the comments. I can see students quiting anime maybe?

tj_han shouldn’t be bashing Sol, what he said make sense and he didnt even mention about dubs. Why be so up tied about it. something fishing here. Anyway, every view is not wrong and doesn’t deserve any bashing.

Anyway, their way of public relationship is to hit into the headlines and tell anime fans not to download? What a bad way to make Singapore a laughing stock to other country. All i know is this. Making it big and blaming on downloaders isn’t correct. Firstly, i didnt even know who the hell is odex as well.

Its not a world about slowness but about getting it before others do. To pay for something that is off fashion? Its not something anime fans would do.

ABout you tj_han saying that mainstream would buy vcds. WHY BLAME ANIME FANS DOWNLOADER? obvious enough that these people are people who wants the best quality?.

3-4k is meant for costs incurred in sending the letter.??????????????????????? they earn more this way LOL. what a scam? 17lettersX4k = 68k…. 68k/20dollars = 3400box LOL. what a fast way to earn money huh? Anyway, they claim to represent the japanese company as well. This is kinda wrong, if they do not license it or whatever, they should just keep quiet. because they can’t get it here, they still want to make money out of it, looks a bit too ridiculous.

Anime is now losing its meaning, it really look like another money making scam already. Initially, its a topic to talk about everyday, now its topic to fear about everyday. It mess up my life not to mention. I don’t see that preventing people from downloading would really work. TO me it makes no sense if the product looks like a bootleg to me. Placing it my room is such a disgrace and its UGLY to have those sliver ugly box in my room? Hello, selling to aunties work but to students/teenagers/young adults? If odex do not even have the initiative to change their product packaging or even advertise a little bit, it make sense that they did not do any marketing at this point. They are just asuming that it was the fault of all downloaders. Or the marketers have all faked their certf?.

Change your sub a little. to pay for something that sucks? Are you having fever? If you want someone to buy your product, make sure its up to standard and ready for market. They are basically forcing people into buying their products and not buy it because it is great?. It lost the true meaning of anime? People make it to earn money [ people to appreciate your anime making efforts ] but people buy to enjoy. If your vcd don’t let us enjoy, we will turn to other places for alternative.

I don’t understand one thing, If they do not want us to download illegal stuff, why don’t they stop something called INTERNET. There is something i really do believe in tho, if there isn’t downloading, there isnt buying. Look at the amount of people who listen to radio now adays? At least when it comes to music, you know where to listen to know is the song great? what about anime? Bare that in mind we do not have TV programmes that are anime related totally. Would you pay money for a total stranger box set?

I wouldn’t pay for something that i know is bad and wouldn’t give me a senses of satisfaction. Odex doesn’t take pride in their own production. Pakaging? Free gifts? Posters? [ rather pay to get better looking limited editions ones? ]. Odex is unwilling to except advise or anything from us. They wouldn’t get to know what we want. If your selling without your comsumer in mind, you’ll end up getting nothing in return, regardless of the effort you put in. I myself own stuff from US and JP but not SG. I can spend all the money i want but i would not spend money on things that sucks. Who will unless they are poor?

ANYWAY, ODEX THEMSELVE SHOULD FINED THEMSELVE FOR USING THOSE TORRENT FILES. its illegal to download right?????? [ I’m just joking, it isnt funny i know. ]

If your talking about moral? there isnt moral on the internet. Too bad. Making students to break their pocket is a bullying act. Odex scored A1s over here and U’s for their production quality. What a shame

They should look why drama vcd sells well and not anime vcd. vcd = older generation [ they care only about the drama and they have the money to do buy ]

Now i totally understand why fashion in singapore is named the worst by other countries. people have eyes to see what is good. Packaging is first impression.

Sol, my claymore DVD from Japan just came in a week ago, it is great as ever, got the limited edition version. Worth my 150dollars. Although it is just 2episode, totally worth it. I ordered the second one as well, its a good anime. Theres a vast difference in the quality in the dvd and the tv version.

SORRY FOR MY SPELLING MISTAKE OR WHAT-SO-EVER. and sorry for the long comment. Just my point of view/ my opinions. I meant no harm to no one.

you’re just trying to justify your downloads.

  28. 28 nanashi 5 comments

Ascaloth: Odex most probably won’t be buying fansub groups’ subtitles. Somebody said some time ago that Odex’s release of Jigoku Shoujo uses Shinsen’s subtitles. Which would mean that they torrent fansubs themselves.

  29. 29 abao 46 comments

    From wikipedia:
Furthermore, all of Odex’s translations are done by out-house translators. Therefore, there is often limited control over the quality of these translations which are then QCed by an editor.

Therefore if their out-house translators resort to torrenting fansub and submitting that, odex may not know about it, since I doubt they QC the entire series. And since its out-house there’s no responsibility for the subber.

yes im justifying my downloads. without downloads, how the hell am i suppose to know about anime?? weird. Havent you guys download a single thing. sigh. Whatever, they can fined how-ever they want. It is close to pointless to do it anyway. If people cant download, they will have their ways of getting it free or get bootlegs from Malaysia or sth. This is quite ridiculous to hack into our pivacy. Thats all im saying, even if they are going to prevent downloaders from downloading, its not going to work. I have yet to download for 5months and i dont see me getting vcd from odex.

    Odex did jigoku shoujo already?

Is it out in the market? DVD? I might wanna get it.

But flaming aside. No matter how wrong Odex might be in terms of PR and business tactics. We are clashing with the wrong group.

It’s like egg clashing with rocks. I’ve resigned to my fate.

tj_han, instead of going to other’s blogger’s odex post and post some ‘cute’ remarks (read: bjorn’s), or defending various points of odex, it’s always good to write the post that you promised you know. Afterall, you DID do first hand research on them, it would be good to just write it all out instead of jumping around. I mean like.. even drmchrso(or something) is starting to flame odex as well.

    @tj_han:

RE:”I can’t believe you guys are comparing the prices of bootlegs with originals. Bootleggers don’t have to cover costs like dubbing, licenses, and others. They also just burn the cds.”

Is it that hard to believe? Consumers only look from their point of view. This is a basic principle of econs, self-interest. If someone only see two close alternatives, one cheaper than the other, then it doesn’t make him unreasonable does it? Any more than that would imply some kind of altruistic cognitive process, and hence be essentially extrapolating. I am no big fan of econs, and of course everyone has a conscience. But the point is cunningly fundamental: Odex has not created a product that is liberatingly different from pirated VCDs, fansubs. Japan-imported R1 DVDs, or even TV recordings.

    el oh el.
odex is being restricted, but unless they do something about the boxart, and improve release timing, there’s really nothing much to say.

  36. 36 paperhigh 3 comments

lol. Let’s go license some anime, then sue people for downloading it. No need to produce it. We’ll earn more this way =p

How many people download anime in SG? Multiply that figure by 3k, and that’s the revenue they are getting. I don’t know how high their costs can be, but I bet this is much, much more than enough to cover their costs, and give them a huge and tidy profit in the process.

They are obviously bullying the individuals — pay up, or we will sue you. And since Singaporeans are rather tame and timid, they would just cough up the cash.

Well people, remember not to support the bully. Or you will simply justify that their bullying was correct and efficient.

Just bought Samurai Champloo Box 2 cos the boxart looks good, I liked the show, and it was only $20 for 3 dvds, 13 episodes, a far cry from the dvd prices charged by Anime House when it was at Parklane.

Box art is those glossy/matt combination, where the art is glossy, slightly embossed, while the rest of the box is matt smooth. See 02.jpg for an idea of what I mean.

However, I muz say, design on the dvd discs (06.jpg) sux big time, totally off from the boxart.

Video, Audio is dvd quality (duh!), dunno abt quality of subs since i dunno jap, but at least not engrish.

Verdict? Odex still isn’t there yet, but at least it’s improving.

I’m just waiting to see what happens when anime downloads are cut by close to 95% (optimistically speaking in favour of Odex) and their vcds/dvds still aren’t showing any improvement in sales. Will they bring the remaining 5% to court? Or will they finally realise that actually it might have been something else that was the cause of the problem (i shall decline to say what the something else is because it seriously won’t matter by then)?

In today’s news (pg.2 The State Times), Starhub has been ordered by the Subordinate Court to disclose the identity of about 1000 of its subscribers who have been accused of downloading anime illegaly. Apparently, Odex has managed to convince the the court as Starhub had initially resisted Odex’s efforts to get its customer data. Pac-net users are supposedly next on Odex’s witch-hunt. Looks like things are going to get a bit more messy in the next few weeks. Maybe Odex knows it’s reputation is destroyed, so it might as well sue all the downloaders and get some $$$. After all, 1000 X 1500 = 1.5 million. Not exactly a small sum and probably one that is higher than their total annual turnover for the past few years. Anyway, I’ve always hated Odex even before this incident due to a personal experience with them when they were still known as Games Mart and were located in Orchard MRT popular. They were not nice then and they are definitely showing their true colours now.

The Anime community here is gonna nose dive and SUEdex is being run by the 2 biggest idiots the world has ever seen.

At the rate they are going, they will be the ones destroying the local market, not just limited to film media but all known merchandise as well before illegal fansub downloads can cause major damage like in South Korea.

Peter Go and Stephen Sing are two of the biggest idiots Singapore has ever produced, and their attitudes to our community is downright disgusting.

I’d rather have our fates in the hands of a psycho madman then those 2.

Silverwolf X: I feel that they are too much uncertainty in this odex saga for us to determine who to blame and who is the “bad guy” here. Cause according to various info and from what i heard. The one that initiated this otaku massacre is actually TV TOKYO itself. Not odex.
However, I think is reasonable for us to blame Odex for being over secertive in this Odex Saga thing.

And if anyone is having doubts on the 3.5 ~ 5k as legal fees.
    I think it is true.

    They have to
    1) BayTSP (which, if you check around, is very well known for charging pretty high rates. Factor in the USD->SGD conversion)
    2) Law firm. I still won’t name it, but they deal with Japan. So they would charge Japanese rates too. There’s a reason why japanese companies pay well - they spend very well too.
    3) Court orders.
    4) ISP charges. The ISPs are profiteering from this. They are charging pretty high amounts to release the data, since this is their chance to earn.
    5) Odex having to hire extra manpower to go through the documentation, match, and then send them out.

(I copied this from HWZ. And its the only decent post anyone had made there -__-)

Just 1,000 members from each ISP, and assuming 3k from each individual, they will be raking in close to $10,000,000 in ‘revenue’. I am not sure whether their expenses will go to this extent or not, because if it does and they aren’t successful, they will definitely go bankrupt. And there’s no way of knowing that their bullying actions will guarantee payment.

I wonder how their expenses are broken down. How much goes into their own pocket, and do any of the money go to the Japanese animation companies they ‘represent’?

Odex needs to be more transparent with this.

ODEX outsources its subbing. Those losers don’t even do the work themselves and suddenly decide whats best for us without giving back in quality. Most of the source materials used are actually Chinese subs from HK/Taiwan DVds and/or fansubs! I’d like ODEX to deny that if we sick CASE on them or countersue.

    A comment by jillin:
“I’ve finally gotten some work done for Odex, heh. Edited the Battle Athletes OVA script last week… and in the process, I found out why the Odex subs have been so bad. They don’t translate from the actual Japanese dialogue, apparently. They get a Chinese translation script from Taiwan or Hong Kong, and have their people translate from that into English, introducing a large number of translation errors in the process. Kanzaki Akari says “Sugoi!” in one memorable scene in the third episode of the OVAs, which their translators transmogrified into “The wind is so strong here!”. Talk about reading too much into a line.

I just started on the Fushigi Yuugi OVA, the second one, and it seems the situation may be worse than I expected. They gave me an HKDVD to use as a reference, and it appears that in an amazing cost-saving move, they decided to copy the HK subs wholesale. Brilliant. It saves me a lot of work, though. I think.

Once Fushigi Yuugi is done (9 episodes of shoujo madness) I get to start work on Vandread, which looks really promising. And speaking of good animes, I just finished watching Scryed. IT WAS AWESOME. ’nuff said.” - http://atalude.wordpress.com/2007/08/12/how-do-i-gotten-pwnt/

Hawliet I also heard about that, but the attitudes of peter Ho and Stephen Sing is downright arrogant and disgusting. In the words of one very outspoken chinese forum poster at HWZ, “I think his (Stephen Sing) mother dropped him during birth!”

    Regarding the link.
The entry was being made like 5years ago.
I dont see it as a reliable source on how odex sub their animes anymore.

    Next,
If xysing is really stephen sing himself.
I do agree that his comment was uncalled for.
And i do agree to a certain extend that its downright disgusting and arrogant.
But remember, at the same time.
The thousands of replies in HWZ was uncalled for too.
I am sure stephen sing monitors the forum everyday.
Everyday he reads thousands of post where people make a mockery out of him through baseless assumptions.
How would you feel if you were him?
Would you want to get back at them?

And as for Odex doing this just for money.
I think i have mentioned in my previous post.
That the 3.5~5k are just for legal fees.
Its up to you to believe anyway.

There are seriously too many controversies in this odex saga.
And people just keep believing whatever they see on the internet.
Someone barks a negative rumour on Odex in HWZ and the rest will just follow.

And in case anyone of you feels that i am just blindly defending odex.
I dont think so. Again its up to you to believe.

Ending this post. I gonna say this.
If hatred continues to brew between Odex and the Community.
It will not benefit both parties at all.

    Cheers~

And i am sorry if i seriously offended anyone from HWZ.

I may sound vocal about this issue but bear with me.

Well, it seems you just pointed out something interesting. Yes, that post is 5 years (actually 6, posted in 2001 originally) old. It means ODEX had been screwing us over since then even!

5 years down the road most fans have switched to downloading or importing. ODEX had FIVE Years to appeal to us but FLUNKED. Heck I think they shifted to animation in 1988… thats ALOT of time.

INSTEAD they kept releasing crap till now. Now they lose money and they start sueing everyone, How would you feel as a fan who has been following the community here.

AND IN THE FIRST PLACE. Stephen ‘SueHappy’ Sing wouldn’t be hated and made a mockery off if he wasn’t such a big jerk about approaching the community here. The first public action he did was to piss everyone off royally. It doesn’t take a genius to find thousands of people wishing to bringa world of greivious hurt to him, if this was Malaysia, Indonesia or Phillipines, his family would be butchered, raped and humiliated by gangs by the time his picture appeared instead of flames from netizens accross the net. He is just lucky he lives in Singapore. He deserves what he got for being a jerk.

I’ve gone through their Gundam SEED, Mai Hime releases. Their subs are blatant RIPS from fansub subtitles. Their recent Shana also suffers from censorship and inaccuracies in the subtitles.

Hawliet is true about one thing though. ODEX isn’t 100% to blame, the other party to blame is Board of Film Censors or in the words of another very vocal forumer at HWZ (Board of F***ing Centurians). Its THANKS to them you all won’t see Girls Bravo Season 2, not ODEX. So quit blaming ODEX for that GB fans.

So in summary, we’re screwed on one side by ODEX, on the other we’re screwed by our own BOFC.

Its censorship like this in media that makes me think Singapore’s hope to become an Arts Hub is a dud. It should call itself a Censorship and Monopolies are welcome Hub.

In the first place, with our ‘first world’ education system, is it so HARD to teach people what is fiction and what is reality!? Just because I watch an anime with excessive nudity doesn’t mean I’m gonna be a rapist for crying out loud. Our education teaches alot of stuff, but fails at teaching simple common sense and tolerance.

So ODEX and BOFC, If you don’t like people to watch a certain type of media because of violence or nudity, or because their religion says so. Then make sure they DON’T. What the heck is your bloody RATINGS system for, to ‘decorate’ VCD/DVD/BD boxes!? The rest of us in the minority WANT TO.

I am willing to pay for each episode if Odex can have that option available as long as I can download and get to watch the latest one asap.

For new anime, I usually download 2-3 episodes to watch and see if I like them and YES I do buy the original though it will take some time before they are available on the shelves for sale.

To me, I just want to watch the latest.

come on la. wad they gonna do next.
might as well say that all anime wallpapers and signature is under their licensing and going to sue every1 who has anime signature and wallpaper or even pictures~

  58. 58 Silverwolf X 27 comments

No, I think at the rate things are going in our sue happy society, they’re gonna sue us because we were breathing their air.

SilverwolfX: if this was Malaysia, Indonesia or Phillipines, his family would be butchered, raped and humiliated by gangs by the time his picture appeared instead of flames from netizens accross the net.

I don’t know if you are just well informed or my country is just too famous, but as an Indonesian, I should hereby say: yes if he is in Indonesia (dunno about Malaysia or Phillipines) his family would be raped, stoned, butchered etc.

for now I think our best bet is to watch online (I’m livin in singapore right now, and like some1 up there said, I prefer to buy bootleg from Indonesia rather than Odex stuff. Ok, so basically the price itself is a huge turndown to buy their release: consider how much we spend to eat everyday vs anime VCD/DVD price. I have a friend back in Indonesia. he played Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga, of course pirated version, US version. after a number of months he showed me an original JAPANESE DVD of that very same game.

well more rants will probably repeat whatsoever posted up there so I’d take my leave

  60. 60 Silverwolf X 27 comments

Zeph, I was kindda trying to sound sarcastic with that remark but… since its true… oh well.

    -.-;;

  61. 61 Zephyranthez 4 comments

well it is a bit exaggerated but if it concerns politics it is true. sadly there has not been as much anime supporter in Indonesia until this very moment. and we don’t have these ODEX-like company that releases nasty english subs (right? never watched odex stuff) in Indonesia. not even Indonesian subs, if needed, as some parties of Indonesian is not that good with english…

  62. 62 Silverwolf X 27 comments

Well, regardless of what our views are, whther its pro or no. The madness will continue.

  63. 63 Jase 1 comment

How come they dun go after the websites that publish torrents? Why go after individuals to make them pay? Many of the individuals are still schooling and prolly dun have the means to buy odex products let alone pay for the fine. Imagine that all this sueing leading to a child committing suicide.. odex will have blood on their hands.

  64. 64 Sephira 1 comment

Agreed. What’s next, Chuangyi suing those illegal manga downloaders? -_-

  65. 65 Silverwolf X 27 comments

Most websites are in countries that are TOLERANT of the fansubbing community and do not fall under Singapore laws.

If ODEX did that, they’d be so filled in hatred, poor Stephen ‘Sue Happy’ Sing will get anal raped a million times in front of his family.

  66. 66 Zephyranthez 4 comments

@ Saphira: IF chuangyi sues for manga downloaders it’s gonna be sux like hell, man. I can’t read Chinese and tell me how many titles did chuangyi released IN ENGLISH

  67. 67 Silverwolf X 27 comments

Chuang Yi has been known for censorship though, but on a whole they’re decent enough quality. Won’t come close to original releases or most American releases, but passable.

  68. 68 chronolite 1 comment

oh wat the hell wats the problem. cant download anime? instead of buying an odex product.. use that money to pay for a proxy and get ur downloads anonymous(i wonder if this works) haha

  69. 69 Why 1 comment

Can anyone tell me why is watching a downloaded, recorded program that is broadcasted from national television illegal?

So if I record a certain program broadcasted from national television and lend my friend to watch, my friend watching it will be consider illegal??

If its illegal, then is watching a recorded program that is broadcasted on national television illegal?

if its illegal, then is recording a broadcasted program illegal?

If its illegal, then why is companies selling recorders to record programs.

If its illegal, then what does consumers buy the recorders for??

If all is illegal then watching recorded broadcasted programs = illegal. But isnt broadcasted program meant for everyone in the first place??

  70. 70 Silverwolf X

    Why ask why?

Internet is illegal. If Odex wins bigtime, you can bet just going online will be a crime.
