And so, it begins…

The National Day of Singapore is the 9th of August, and for me, it now has an added significance; to me, it is also the day when TJ Han offered me a big break by asking me to form a new writing team for RIUVA.

So, first off, a little bit about myself. Like TJ Han, I am a freshman in the National University of Singapore this semester; unlike him, I am based in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Where the world of anime is concerned, I am a relative newcomer on the scene; prior to last November, the only exposure I had with anime were bits and pieces of Doraemon, Pokemon, DBZ, and Gundam (like, who hasn’t?).

Which leads up to how I discovered anime; it was when I, quite by accident, happened across a review of the “Kanon” visual novel; amongst other things, I was intrigued by the accounts of how it was considered a milestone for visual novels for being one of the first to actually come with a good story, how it touched people’s hearts, and most of all, how “one cannot be considered an otaku if one has not played Kanon”. And as someone always on the lookout for a good story, I was therefore disappointed that the Kanon game had not been translated in its entirety…until I found out that an anime version of it, made by Toei, had been released in 2002.

Naturally, I grabbed the chance to watch it, hoping to see for myself whether it lived up to all the hype. And here I have to confess; I was somewhat disappointed, for Toei’s take on Kanon wasn’t particularly outstanding in my opinion. Crappy art direction aside, I was left wondering what was so special about the Kanon story that it received such accolades…until I found out not long after, that there was going to be a remake of Kanon by Kyoto Animation, the apparent golden boys on the scene.

So, I gave Kanon 2006 a try. And I haven’t looked back since.

Enthralled by the true beauty of the story of Kanon, made even more beautiful by the hand of KyoAni, I finally realized the potential anime had as a medium to tell a really good story, and thus started my career in anime; AIR (TV), SHnY, FMP!, Sola, Lucky Star, and more recently, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, just to name a few. Even though anime is not really my first foray into Japanese pop culture (I had been following live-action pieces like “Crying Out Love In The Center Of The World” before this), it quickly became an integral part of my budding interest in it, and I soon became a regular fixture in the Animesuki forums. Then, to expand my horizons in the community, I applied to join The Nihon Review as a reviewer (albeit one with a focus on live-action rather than anime). It was through NHRV that I met, and got acquainted with TJ Han, owner of RIUVA. Then 9th August, 2007 came around.

And so, here I am.

It is really kind of an intimidating experience to be asked to write for RIUVA, for it is one of the highest-profile, most-read blog in the anime blogosphere, not to mention sharing writing duties with TJ, arguably one of the celebrities of the Singapore animeblog community. Moreover, I had to give thought to the question of, “what do people frequent RIUVA for, and do I have the ability to meet their expectations?” Nevertheless, an opportunity like this doesn’t come all the time, so there was no way I could have said no to TJ. So here I am, and I hope that the contributions I will be making to RIUVA in the future will be to everyone’s liking. J

With that, I end my pioneer editorial for RIUVA. Ascaloth, signing out.

PS: Anyone wants to be my lecture mate in Japanese studies or LAJ?

A note from tj han: Poor Ascaloth, he hopped on the wrong ship! Riuva is neither high-profile or most-read, and I’m certainly not a celebrity of any sort. But I suppose he is just doing the customary Japanese-style bootlicking to earn more publishing opportunities! Lol. Also, Kanon is such a gay show.

The Haruhi Novels are a pretty engrossing read if you’re interested in giving Japanese novels a try (Alot of good Anime were inspired from novels or vice versa anyways, and HGAMES, but thats another issue all together…). You should give those a try. Kino Liang Court has all volumes to date at the moment.

what do people frequent RIUVA for, and do I have the ability to meet their expectations?

    To answer your questions:

    1) The incredible original artwork
    2) If you own MS Paint or something similar, then yes

By all means have fun. And I had your name confused with Astaroth from Soul Calibur at the beginning of reading this. The title didn’t help. Sorry about that. :P

TJ Han is like the Beck Hansen of Animeblogging. He’s weird and he smells funny, but is kind of groovy and you feel the inexplicable certainty that he has extraordinary genitalia.

It’s his legendary phallic prowess (read tripeman) that draws the crowd. And yes Sayonora Zetsubo Sensei is real good.

Tj is godlike. And I’m not going to think otherwise, ever.

Welcome to RIUVA, ascaloth. I wish you all the best. If I were asked to write for this site I’d have a nervous breakdown.

Looking forward to your articles. :)

Which LAJ are you taking? Darn the 5 weekly hour of tutorials (that’s like the total number of hours in ME tutorials for the entire sem…..now I have to appeal due to the clashes with other modules. (Less time studying LAJ = more time for anime)

Do not use any < and > for your own sake. It will end the comment there and then. Also, there is an automatic IQ filter which weeds out comments made by those who accidentally got transported from the stone age.
